What to do when my kid swallows a coin? I don't know if it is a dime or penny or what... will be taking her to er... but wanted to know if anyone of you experienced this with your child and what did you do? What happened? Thanks.

AIL --- 12 years ago -

Happened to one of my brothers when we were younger- My parents didn't take him anywhere; just checked his poop to make sure it came out! Seriously, lol! Oh, and it did too.

PutOnYourBigGirlPanties --- 12 years ago -

oh boy, been there done that....kids are weird!! as the saying goes... this too shall pass!!

~Shannon~ --- 12 years ago -

I ate my share.lol I had to eat extra fiber to help me poop faster.

We had to have a probe down the throat of my dd. They were able to bring it up through her throat. They told us if we had waited any longer, they would have had to operate. She swallowed more than one coin though. BTW she was 4 and knew better. She had them in her mouth and jumped off of the top bunk and accidentally swallowed them.

U will be wasting your time and money if you go to the ER, they will tell you it will pass. no if she runs a fever or cant "go" then I will take her. Until then give her prune juice..

Fiona --- 12 years ago -

Well I would say depending on the age of the child and beings that you don't know whether it was a dime or a quarter I would go in to be safe. Kids, my dd swallowed a metal jack at 4 scared the crap out of me so I ran her across the street and scared the crap out of AmyJ lol we went to the minor ER but she had thrown it up before we even got out of the house I was to scared to notice it.

Pennies made after 1982 have a highly corrosive zinc in them that can erode the esopgagus or stomach lining if it gets lodged in there. I'd take your child in or at the very least call your pedi. A penny could easily get lodged in the esophagus.

2girlygirls --- 12 years ago -

A combination of pennies and dimes. Four total.

Fallon --- 12 years ago -

I would call your pedi first. An ER visit should be for an emergency. If your pedi tells you to go to the ER then they will call ahead for you, so your wait will not be as long. If you do not know how many coins your child swallowed you most likely will have to get an XRay. Good Luck

prepare to go poo poo spelunking do you need a special hat with a light for this?

Mine swallowed a nickel a couple years ago. Lots of water to help get it down and then it came out the other end. As long as it's not blocking the windpipe, you should be fine. An xray can show where it is. I would go to minor emergency clinic and get the xray.

mommy33 --- 12 years ago -

DD swallowed a push pin...xrays...er the whole bit..was told to go home and watch for it to pass...it did..but I thought something with a sharp point could puncture the insides...I guess it's all about waiting to see...

Denise C --- 12 years ago -

Would you believe swallowing a dry bean can kill you? When I was 22 months old I swallowed a dry pinto I had found. Mom found me blue and I was in intensive care for two weeks. I was very lucky. Several years ago a child swallowed a dry bean and the ER sent her home because they said it couldn't do damage. Wrong, the little girl died. When moisture hits beans, they swell and can block off the windpipe.

Any updates lovebeingamom? I hope things work out okay for you.

This is funny.....when we were potty training my son he swollowed a dime. the Dr said to watch for it to pass. He was running around naked and pooped on the floor. there was the dime! I ran him in the bathroom to clean him up and before I could clean up his mess in the other room....the stupid dog came in and ATE IT!!!! So then I had to wait for the dime to come out of the dog's poo! Seriously, we spent a whole week looking through poop for the dime :)

Crumb --- 12 years ago -

I would definitly take her in to the minor er today. My dd swallowed(barely) a quarter when she was 2, because it was so big in her little stomach we had to have x-rays taken every few days to make sure it was going down...2 1/2 weeks later it came out! The concern was that it was too big to pass through her organs and would either block or tear something thing. We have a couple of great x-rays that we can bribe her with later in life!

i remember as a kid i thought it would be cool to swallow a coin of each kind (duh!!!) no one ever knew and .. nothing happened ... so .. its okay i never made it to a quarter

Hello... we're back from the ER. They took x rays without hesitation. BUT, took forever to tell us if there was a problem. Then I told the lady at the front (of NE Hosp) that I was leaving and if it were anything important or urgent that they could just call me. Never got a call. At least they took xrays... if it were something then they woulda called me sooner or at all if that. She's happy and as active as she ever was. We look forward for it to pass but she's almost 5 and I'm not about to start digging in the toilet when she goes. (besides that, she only goes every so many days anyway - yeah, that makes it a BIG job if you know what I mean)

RRay --- 12 years ago -

You should have change in the next day or so.. if ya still want it!

Momoftwo --- 12 years ago -

Our pedi told us to check the poop to make sure it passed. You really need to watch for it or how will you know if it's lodged?

lovebeingamom --- 12 years ago -

well, now I even wonder if she was telling the truth... yeah, she was gagging or something but she's going thru a phase that she just makes stories up now. Don't know what inspires the stories... she does not lack attn or anything... but she just likes to talk so much that she'll talk and talk talk and talk.

lovebeingamom --- 12 years ago -

dont' know if she did or not. but I did make a new rule... not only are they not allowed to have food in the room, but they are also not allowed to have money in their room either!! From now on, they have to put the money straight into their special bank (we are going to pick a ministry from our church and name that bank for that and just let the money add up).

lovebeingamom --- 12 years ago -

I keep asking her and she's still on the story that it was a dime... we'll never know... I'm just glad it was not lodged in her airways.

Momoftwo --- 12 years ago -

At 18 months, my dd said she swallowed a penny. I freaked out, etc. It never did come out in her poop and then she changed her story, said she didn't SWALLOW the penny. I guess she really didn't swallow the darn thing, but boy she freaked us out! I checked poop for a week.
