I have a female inside cat that has started acting different. She just started this ---- tries to drink out of the toliet, out of any glasses sitting on tables. Anyone else had cats do this?

Mygirl01 --- 16 years ago -

I would have the cat tested for Feline Diabetes

Sounds like excessive drinking - does the cat box have large clump areas - more than normal? If so - you should have your cat checked out - my cat has diabetes and those were the symptoms that started me to watch her closly and finally take her in to be treated.

I have a cat the is 100% fine and she always drinks out of cups left on the table and the toliet too.

If your cat displays any symptoms of diabetes seek medical attention immediately. Untreated diabetes can cause muscle, nerve, and organ damage or kill your cat. Initial signs of diabetes are: Increased urination Increased water consumption Weight loss, often accompanied by increased appetite

I have a cat the is 100% fine and she always drinks out of cups left on the table and the toliet too. We do too, but he has always done it since he was a baby, if it just came out of nowhere and suddenly changed behavior, it needs to go the the vet asap.

Another symptom my cat had was - her hind legs seemed to be weak and she would walk funny. Please have your cat checked out soon. And as far as the toilet - no one should be drinking out of it. :)

Ooops I forgot to put our cat has done this since she was little bitty so it is just habit but yes if your cat has never done that before or if you ever have any concerns I would go see the vet asap.

And as far as the toilet - no one should be drinking out of it. :) We actually asked the vet about this and was told that as long as it was 1. clean 2. no cleaning tabs added to "auto clean" 3. and we always flush an extra time after cleaning it out to remove any chemicals It was a source of clean fresh water (eww, I know) that attracts cats because they don't like water that has been sitting out. So we clean the toliet daily and the cat loves to get water from there. Have you seen those studies that show that some toliet water is cleaner than the tap water...makes you think.

Well as long as you clean the toilet everyday - more power to you. :)

I had a cat in HS that only drank from the toliet in my bathroom, so I kept it clean and everything was great. I left for college and my parents began to care for the cat and took over cleaning duties of that bathroom as well. On my first trip home after being gone for about a month and a half, my "black and white tuxedo" cat had developed a blue lower lip and chin and when I went into the bathroom I found the source, my dad had added a clorox tab to keep it clean since I was gone. I went nuts, the cat went to the vet and thank goodness they have so little bleach in them it didn't harm the cat. After that incident drop in cleaners have been banned from use by my family! So, I guess my cats have aways enjoyed the toliet cocktail over a water bowl. Sorry to hijack, it was just something funny and I wanted to share!

I wonder why they do that - all of my cats drink only from their water bowls. Do you leave the seat up?

zɹossıʞs --- 16 years ago -

No, my cat just lifts up the seat and helps herself.

busybee, is your cat drinking more, or just preferring the toilet over her water bowl? A lot of cats do this. I have no idea why! My mom's cat used to jump up on the vanity and drink from the faucet when she heard someone turn the sink on. My cat drinks from the toilet sometimes and I had another cat that would stick her head in glasses and drink from them. Cats are just weird sometimes. lol! We, as humans, don't have the right to question their actions. They are, after all, cats and can do as the please. :P

Just about the only place my cat would drink from,is a bathroom faucet. She did have a self-filling water bowl, and would use that occassionaly, and she would use the little water fall on the deck...But mainly, the bathroom faucet..If she saw you heading that way..she would run and hop up on the sink and wait for you to turn it on.. Other times. You would go in and there she would be..feet in the sink..butt in the air..just waiting..And you would think..now how long have you been there? lol I miss her..she dissappeared in Oct :(

I cant say if the water in the toilet is clean / cleaner or not - but just ask yourself if you would allow your kids to play or drink out of it. But to the question that started all of this - please have your cat checked out as soon as possible. Peace Out
