World-renowned evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins will speak at Rice University Oct. 10. The talk, titled "The Magic of Reality: How We Know What's Really True," will begin at 7 p.m. in Stude Concert Hall in the Shepherd School of Music's Alice Pratt Brown Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public.

  RICHARD DAWKINS
Dawkins was the Charles Simonyi Professor of the Public Understanding of Science at the University of Oxford until his retirement in 2008. To promote the values of education, science and critical thinking skills, he established The Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science, which has branches in both the United Kingdom and the United States. He also maintains a website, www.RichardDawkins.net. Dawkins is the author of 11 books: "The Selfish Gene" (1976, second edition 1989), "The Extended Phenotype" (1982), "The Blind Watchmaker" (1986), "River Out of Eden" (1995), "Climbing Mount Improbable" (1996), "Unweaving the Rainbow" (1998), "A Devil’s Chaplain" (2003), "The Ancestor’s Tale" (2004), "The God Delusion" (2006), "The Greatest Show on Earth" (2009) and "The Magic of Reality" (2011). He will sign copies of his latest book after the lecture. Dawkins' lecture is sponsored by Rice's HERE (Houston Enriches Rice Education) Project and The Institute for Humanist Studies.

I'll be there.

Excellent, now I don't have to worry about OH SNAP coming ;) BTW RSVPs appreciated ;)

In relation to atheism and debate, although atheists claim there are reasonable arguments for atheism, the quality of atheist debate has been quite poor from the proponents of atheism. For example, Richard Dawkins has established a reputation of avoiding his strongest debate opponents. On May 14, 2011, the British newspaper The Daily Telegraph published a news story entitled Richard Dawkins accused of cowardice for refusing to debate existence of God.[1] In The Daily Telegraph article Dr. Daniel Came, a a member of the Faculty of Philosophy at Oxford University was quoted as writing to fellow atheist Richard Dawkins concerning his refusal to debate Dr. William Lane Craig, "The absence of a debate with the foremost apologist for Christian theism is a glaring omission on your CV and is of course apt to be interpreted as cowardice on your part."[2] In addition, the cowardice associated with atheism has become so obvious that it is making newspaper headlines"

Atheist Richard Dawkins Lost a Debate to a Rabbi and then Claimed Debate Never Took Place

"Rabbi Shmuley Boteach was named the London Times Preacher of the Year 2000 and is the author of 20 books.[26] Recently Rabbi Schuley Boteach reported that college student audience voted that he won a debate between himself and Dawkins and then Richard Dawkins claimed the debate never took place. (the debate later turned out to be video taped)"

Creation Scientists Tend to Win the Creation-Evolution Debates

"In 2010, the worldwide atheist community was challenged to a debate by Creation Ministries International as prominent atheists were speaking at a 2010 global atheist convention in Australia.[14] Richard Dawkins, PZ Myers and other prominent atheists refused to debate Creation Ministries International.[15]

A majority of the most prominent and vocal defenders of the naturalistic evolutionary position since World War II have been atheists.[16][17] Creation scientists tend to win the Creation-Evolution debates and many have been held since the 1970's particularly in the United States.[18][19] Robert Sloan, Director of Paleontology at the University of Minnesota, reluctantly admitted to a Wall Street Journal reporter that the "creationists tend to win" the public debates which focused on the creation vs. evolution controversy.[20][19] In August of 1979, Dr. Henry Morris reported in an Institute for Creation Research letter the following: “By now, practically every leading evolutionary scientist in this country has declined one or more invitations to a scientific debate on creation/evolution.”[19] Morris also said regarding the creation scientist Duane Gish (who had over 300 formal debates): “At least in our judgment and that of most in the audiences, he always wins.”[19] Generally speaking, leading evolutionists generally no longer debate creation scientists because creation scientists tend to win the creation vs. evolution debates.[21] In addition, the atheist and evolutionist, Richard Dawkins has shown inconsistent and deceptive behavior concerning his refusal creation scientists. In an article entitled Are Kansas Evolutionists Afraid of a Fair Debate? the Discovery Institute states the following:

"Defenders of Darwin's theory of evolution typically proclaim that evidence for their theory is simply overwhelming. If they really believe that, you would think they would jump at a chance to publicly explain some of that overwhelming evidence to the public. Apparently not.[22]"

I'm was a donor to Reasonable Faith for a while and I have the DVD collection here. I'd like to see Dawkins debate William Lane Craig myself, one on one. I'm not sure Craig is the foremost Christian theologian. Certainly, Strobel sells more books; and, WLC by the same remarks refuses to answer a lot of the counter-arguments made on his FB (of which I'm also a follower).

Personally, I don't think defeating WLC would be difficult.

Evan Carroll --- 13 years ago -

BTW, If WLC ever came into town, and I was made aware of it, I'd certainly put the event on KHA-Atheists calendar too.

JohnLynch --- 13 years ago -

Personally, I don't think defeating WLC would be difficult.

i seriously doubt YOU could...if you were speaking of dawkins, dawkins doesn't defeat anybody...it's very hard to defeat the truth

Evan Carroll --- 13 years ago -

I think I could, and I think Dawkins could too.

JohnLynch --- 13 years ago -

I think I could, and I think Dawkins could too.

dawkins won't try...and you flatter yourself...you can't even make a good argument for your position on this forum

Evan Carroll --- 13 years ago -

Sure I can, your persona is relentlessly exhausting on an online forum so I won't play your game. I've invited you to a real life meeting at a public place on numerous occasions.

I don't think I'm the only one that ignores you entirely -- don't get me wrong I read your stuff, but I'm not getting into a long drawn debate with you. When it comes to engaging you any validity on your side is burdened by wearisome persistence and stubbornness.

We could also talk on the phone.

Going off air --- 13 years ago -

I'm not getting involved

what i mean is in this thread not necessarily in the hawkins thingy

however i do have 2 cents to add

Methinks a better method to sway those with opposing views to our side, no matter what side of the fence we rest

is a good old fashioned duel at 20 paces

after 20 paces we turn and fire

the one quicker on the draw naturally wins

Evan Carroll --- 13 years ago -

I have no interest in shooting JL: though I'll leave him speechless none the less. =)

Going off air --- 13 years ago -

though I'll leave him speechless none the less

so what i hear u saying is that u have no desire to shoot him

only a desire to kick em in tha nutz???

rendering him speechless

i dunno whut 2 think bout that

Evan Carroll --- 13 years ago -

only a desire to kick em in tha nutz???

I never said such a thing. I'm not a nut-kicker either.

Going off air --- 13 years ago -

I never said such a thing.

rofl x 4 this is KU... a happy place where words are often put in the mouth of those who never said such a thing

we see it all the time

however i take it back since i mis-deciphered and was only j/k

u r a good sport

JohnLynch --- 13 years ago -

I don't think I'm the only one that ignores you entirely

how can you ignore someone entirely, but respond to their posts?...is that the same as believing that your ancestors are rocks?

MandyPants --- 13 years ago -

I wanna go!! I love Dawkins. I just downloaded "The Selfish Gene."

oneyedman --- 13 years ago -

Enjoy your lecture. I urge all attend.

But don't for a second think that Richard Dawkins is without faith. He has a firm belief in the power of science to answer the great questions of the universe.

A faith built on the belief in a hubristic humanity being the engine of discovery, rather than the beneficiary of divine grace.

POTUS --- 13 years ago -

lol @johnlynch

I've challenged you to a public debate at Town Center on numerous occasions. You try to point out that Dawkins dodges debates, what about you?
