My hubby and I had braces and both finished our treatment in October 2013. I show up at the orthodontist today with my daughter for her appt. and was told that I owe several hundred dollars still for both me and the hubs because the lady in charge of billing screwed up and didn't give me the correct figures!!! I am very upset. I "paid in full" the day the braces went on and the office hasn't said a word to me about needing to pay more until today. They are ultimately blaming the mess on the insurance company by saying the insurance company isn't paying the amount that they originally said they would so they are having to pass that on to me. I the office in tears and felt like a moron because I let my emotions get the best of me but I am so upset that they feel like they can do this. Ugh...just needed to vent. Is this even my obligation since their office staff made the mistake? They have not said one word to me about any additional payments since the braces went on 2 1/2 years ago and like I said, our braces have been off for 1 1/2 years!! I take my other kids in every month for their appts and have never been told until today that I owe them money!

Have you spoken to the office mgr? They should write off anything that old.

Stubbs --- 10 years ago -

Yep! I have spoken with every single person at the office. They basically said pay up. I honestly was so shocked today when they layed that on me. We are not talking about a couple hundred Bucks either. It's well over $1000. I would not have gone into braces if I told the amount that they are telling me now. Someone did something wrong (the lady no longer works there, I think she got fired but not totally sure) and they are trying to out the blame on me.

That sounds very strange. Usually if you owe anything the office sends out bills and followup bills. Did you get any kind of EOB from your insurance company? That usually spells things out as far as what the insurance company is paying and what you still owe.

If they made a mistake and are just now catching up with it, I think they should forget about it. Especially if you have been going in with your other kids and they never mentioned it until now. I wonder if what they told you is even correct.

Do you have any receipt or check to show you "paid in full"? It should not be your problem IMO if they miscalculated.

I would write a letter to the Dr. and tell him exactly what happened.

I know I can find a copy of the check that I wrote when the braces went on, although Im sure I didn't write "paid in full" on them. I have never recived a bill nor have they ever said anything to me in the many years I have been there with all my kids. I still have 2 in braces so I am there every month!!! It just makes me sick.

LOL- the dr was the one who cornered me today and asked for a "consultation" when I walked in today. He basicay said sorry, it is your responsibility :(

When I was making payments for a longterm treatment, every visit I made a payment and received a printout that showed my balance owed on the total. At one point I went ahead and paid it all and at every visit I still received a printout. At the bottom it would say balance owed "0".

This sounds like a very disorganized and unprofessional practice. I still can't understand why you would not have been sent past due notices if this was the case.

I need to call the insurance company but I am starting to think their office person didn't file the claims properly with the insurance company and because so much time has passed the insurance company is refusing the pay since it has been so long and now they are trying to collect that from me!

SueRDH --- 10 years ago -

It wasn't an office here in Kingwood was it?

I would ask for copies of the original documents. My chiropractor tried this tactic a few years ago, but the paperwork showed the price I agreed to was paid in full. You can only be held accountable for the amount you agreed to pay at the time of the service.

Jpgirl --- 10 years ago -

I'd tell them to pound sand and let them sell it to collections ( they won't because they already would've) and then find a new orthodontist

JJ3085 --- 10 years ago -

I would request a printout for all payments that you had made for the treatment. This sounds very sketchy on their end, and it seems they're trying to scam you for more money.

Yikes. That's their oversight. The norm is a required pay off of the balance prior to removal.

Be persistent.
