It's that time of year again, high school musical season. As a local journalist I was not approved to do a published review on one of my favorite shows being done by a rich, suburban high school. Starting yesterday, and in to Monday Kingwood HS is putting on the hit comedy, Nice Work If You Can Get It, a hilarious musical featuring music by the Gershwin's. Kingwood Theatre usually does not disappoint (with it's musicals at least), thought they never quite make the cut for Tommy Tune awards. Since moving to Houston I have only attended this HS last three musicals. This one was the best by far. The past two years I was very overwhelmed with the size of the ensemble, this year, though large for the chosen show, was a better size. All the dances were high energy and fun for the eyes. A smaller ensemble would've worked better and been cleaner though. The dances of Fascinating Rhythm, S'Wonderful, and Lady Be Good were showstoppers. The costumes: average. They kind of just seemed sloppy, plus the male ensemble all had weird things on their feet. More of the budget of the show should have went towards costumes, and they should've had different designers. The lighting, just like last year was phenomenal and the orchestra was 20 times better than the past shows. Now lets go through the cast... The lead, Jimmy Winter was played by none other than the Directors son. Yeah, you read that right. Now, I could understand that it may not be nepotism, but to my belief it was. The actor playing Jimmy, though a phenomenal actor, sounded like he permanently has something lodged in his throat. What he lacks in singing and dancing he seemed to make up in acting. The young lady playing Billie was a tiny fireball on stage. Her energy never lacked and her over all performance blew me away, besides one thing- treat me rough. Though the number was hilarious, this girl could not belt the top notes which is what gives this song its punch. The young woman playing the duchess, she was great, we will definitely see her on the big stage someday. The utterly talented young man playing Cookie, he killed it (in a good way), big things in his future too. The junior who played THE Eileen was perfect in her role, quite comical. The young man who played Chief Berry was very good and awkward, just as it should be. I just wish his voice had been featured more, it was lovely. Jeannie, OH MY, played by the same girl who played Belle, once again blew me away with her singing. If anyone from this show makes it to broadway, it will be her. Duke- while very comical, hard to understand and not very in the moment. His singing lacked and his acting was average, but he was funny so kudos to him. The Senator was alright but kind of stayed the same level which exhausted me. Millicent, absolutely funny. Overall, good show. If you are interested in seeing a show with pure raw talent (from some of the cast), i suggest you go see this show as it runs- February 5th, 6th, and 8th at 7:30 PM

You have no right or reason to critique a High School play. You have no right to say anything negative about any of their talents because they are children and are not on stage to be judged, but are on stage because it makes them happy. I have seen the show twice and both times all of them did an incredible job. Feel free to do a quick search on the "weird things on their feet"... They're called spats and are part of the costumes to fit historical accuracy and the Broadway production of the show. Post all the positive opinions you want, but keep the negative opinions you have to yourself unless you actually have a legitimate reason to say them. Do you want to know why you weren't approved "to do a published review on one of my favorite shows being done by a rich, suburban high school"? Because 1) You're a rubbish journalist judging by this article you've posted, 2) High-schoolers don't need this kind of criticism unless it's by their director or by someone asked to give an honest critique, and 3) Though your name is MrsOffBroadway, it is evident that you have no expertise in any of this, even more so in a high school setting. If you are indeed a local journalist, learn the difference between a newspaper and a diary.

Shame on you MrsOffBroadway! These are a bunch of High School kids who have spent many hours rehearsing for this play and you have to individually critique them? Seriously? I agree with MrsOnBroadway. For many, this is their first public performance so if they are not up to your standard, then maybe that is why. Instead of being so negative, maybe you should appreciate what these kids are doing for what it is - a High School performance. For me and others I know who have seen it, we thoroughly enjoyed it. And just for the record, yes, on this occasion the Directors son did have the lead part and he did great! Did he have the lead part in the last musical? No! Constructive criticism is one thing, but ripping kids apart individually is taking things too far.
