POLL: Would you support the 1964 Civil Rights Bill?

Let's say the year is 1964, we live in Texas and President LBJ is trying to pass the Civil Rights Act. Would you support it? This act outlaws many forms of discrimination against racial, ethnic, national and religious minorities. Including women. In other words, this act ends racial segregation in schools, work and places that serve the general public.

Yes, I will supported it. Vote

 48.3% (28)
No, I will not supported it. Vote

 51.7% (30)

I can't speak for others, but I've been personally attacked by posters I've never even talked to before.

True, that happens.

randyjet --- 2 years ago -

While I understand why there is outrage against Chick Fil A, I too am against gay marriage while I was for ALL the civil rights acts of the 60s since I was an active participant in the movement. I think it is not good business to try and use products on a free market to promote a political cause, especially when it is based on religious bigotry. It is their right to do so, but I will not be going to their place of business if that is how they wish to conduct it by appealing to prejudice and bigotry. THAT is what Mayor Emmanuel was refering to when he stated that CFAs views are not consistent with Chicago values. I agree with him on that score.

There are plenty of good reasons to oppose gay marriage which are NOT religious based. Gay marriage is a conservative, libertarian view, NOT a liberal one. I do feel that the state has a right to regulate some private decisions when it is in the states interest, such as banning harmful, addictive drugs. I also agree with Red China's policy of limiting families to one child, though I disagree with its implementation of forced abortions. ANY government, capitalist, communist, socialist in China would have had to make such a policy as a simple matter of survival. In such a situation as they faced, gay marriage might be part of the solution and would make sense. I also support the idea of a military draft when it is needed. THAT is the most invasive denial of rights possible, especially since it only applies to young men and they can lose their lives, not just be denied marriage to the one they love. If the state can take away their lives, it sure as HELL can say who may or may not marry.

Looking at US history, Utah was denied entrance to the union as a state until it banned polygamy. Once the head of the Mormons had a revelation that polygamy was bad, they got to be a state. The arguments for gay marriage can be applied to polygamy as well, which the ACLU is litigating on that basis. So if gay marriage is a right, then so is polygamy. You cannot logically divorce the two. Indeed, by denying polygamy, you are trampling on the religious rights of Muslims, some Mormons, and others religions which allow such a thing.

Ya need to change your name to Mrs. Roper because your about as clueless.

TheUglyTruth --- 2 years ago -

So am I to understand that 50% of KU is saying that they are ok with deciding what rights a baby will have at birth for the rest of its life?

At birth? You're born a girl, black, whatever and no matter what you accomplish it do your entire life you will never be as good as a white male or has the same rights as him.

50% is good with that?

WOW!!!!!

Lets Be Fair --- 2 years ago -

I refuse to call names. Sorry you have to resort to that :(

I guess you never heard of Solicitor General Olsen who litigated the case against CA amendment outlawing gay marriage. HE is a libertarian and a conservative and supports gay marriage. I have to agree with him that gay marriage is a libertarian cause, not a liberal one. It is the liberals who have not thought through their position since it contradicts everything they are supposed to stand for.

txsassy --- 2 years ago -

I'm bumping this for you conservative buddies chillin' (not working) at Chevron right now.

Guess you never heard that probably 90% of conservatives are against gay marriage.

JohnLynch --- 2 years ago -

gay marriage = oxymoron

BCSKW --- 2 years ago -

BTW, lets be honest, the Chick Fill A thing is not about free speech. It's about gay marriage.

No, it's about one mans opinion and a bunch of people who don't think he should have that opinion.

Red Heifer --- 2 years ago -

Like Tatt said 4 pages back, of course it would be supported overwhelmingly. This is America and that bill was critical in extending American rights to Americans.

I think everyone agrees that anyone is entitled to their opinion. When you make blanket statements that are the equal to saying black people should drink out of different water fountains or sit at the back of the bus its considered hate speech. Still you are entitled to your opinion but there is gonna be backlash, especially if you are a major business owner.

so i guess conservatives arent really conservative then, are they? even o'reilly recognized yesterday that DOMA is dead because it discriminates at the federal level among people who are married under state law. and more and more states recognize that they really cant discriminate among straight and same-gender marriage.

Tipsyhic --- 1 years ago -

Well Hispanics are now the majority so why are they still classified a MINORITY???

Refer to moretolife "porch monkey" comments. Have the $50 ready.

Gotta love Kingwood. Same comments in this building would have someone fired. KU, business as usual. LOL

fcabanski --- 1 years ago -

"This is about being against gay marriage and making a public outcry in support of denying them the right to marry. "

No, it's about a public outcry demanding that the government change marriage.

Refer to Obama is gay thread.

Kara, you were wrong.

Dorothy Parker --- 1 years ago -

Wow, CrazyDiamond...that is such an incedibly hateful post against an entire race of people.

How do you feel about poor white people like Honey boo boo's family, living in trailers ignorant and proud of it? Do they represent the "complete failure of white culture?"

Mr Mxyzptlk --- 1 years ago -

Civil rights were needed...50 years ago. Now, it is simply another in a long, endless line of excuses that the blacks continue to use, and to launch blame on others, for their complete failure as a culture.

Darwin should be allowed to let entropy work to cleanse, as nature intended.

Is this guy for real?

Stuff like this is allowed here?

Wow, CrazyDiamond...that is such an incedibly hateful post against an entire race of people.

what a statement of nonsense...there is only one race of people...many different cultures...ONE race

Yeah, her statement was the nonsense. Are you reading the same posts? I guess you just ignore blatant racism.

JohnLynch --- 1 years ago -

I guess you just ignore blatant racism.

lol...do you not comprehend?...there is ONLY ONE RACE...racism is a made up concept...just like more than one race is a made up concept

And Joe Paterno did nothing wrong...it all fits perfectly.

Mr Mxyzptlk --- 1 years ago -

racism is a made up concept

O.K. there buddy. Tell that to the victims. People have been victimized because of skin color and yes........race, in every way imaginable. It's happened in the past, it happens now, and will happen in the future. There are always the ignorant and violent that seek ways to place themselves above someone else. To deny that is ludicrous.

there is ONLY ONE RACE...

No. There is only one species. There are different races.

JohnLynch --- 1 years ago -

And Joe Paterno did nothing wrong

hey...you're finally getting it...it's good to see you obtain some wisdom

and yes........race,

and no...not race...people have been victimized since the beginning...victimization didn't begin because of color...it began because of selfishness...and worked it's way into cultures

No. There is only one species. There are different races

nope...only one race...species is another made up concept

ChristineDaae --- 1 years ago -

nope...only one race...species is another made up concept

So everything is of the same species? We are the same as cats? Help me out here...I'm confused.

CrazyDiamond --- 1 years ago -

The word was "culture". Everyone on this planet has coddled, and accepted every flaw of the black culture, in many ways disenfranchising more qualified recipients of said job or consideration, or benefits, simply to allow a favorable (see unfair) advantage to a group, based solely on race. All of it. Every last cent has been wasted. They despise civilized morals, and any of them that tries, is ridiculed as a sell out. That time is done.

The change in attitude will come after the coddling, and hand outs are stopped. Then, and only then, will respect, and jobs be earned by acting civilized, and not by being a "victim", and serving a quota.

I voted "No".

JohnLynch --- 1 years ago -

So everything is of the same species?

do you you even read?...if species is a made up concept...then everything couldn't be the same species...because there are no species

seriously...the discussion was about humans...why did you bring cats into the discussion?
