The OP has no idea whether the person was milking the system or doing a normal transaction.

That's the issue.

That's right. Sure looked to me like she wasn't in any great financial need. Maybe sell the jewelry, phone and/or vehicle to buy food?

Maybe mind your own business, stop being a creeper and worry about yourself.

If someone is disabled to the point that they are on medicaid, their benefits can be put on a Lone Star Card. It's possible that the shopper has someone in her home that is 100% disabled and is on medicare. Here's the kicker. Once you are on medicare, all of the benefits come to you whether you want them or not.

If that's the case, then the person living with the shopper in question may have given her the Lone Star card to use as she wished. In other words, it's not hers, but some one elses.

If she was purchasing items that didn't seem appropriate, it may not have been for her or her family.

Here's an analogy. If a person retires as a multi millionaire and then elects to take social security, is that a bad thing? They paid into it for a lifetime so they deserve it even though the really don't need it..right? In my opinion, the same holds true with the Lone Star card. She's probably paid into that benefit fund for quite a few years and now has a way to get some of that back legally.

I don't agree with that line of thinking, but, it's plausible.

It is illegal for someone else to use your Lonestar card, I can't find anywhere that says childcare payments can be placed on the card.

Then we should all get the Lone Star card.

That chick was just a middle man for the that money. Look who's hands it's in now.

That $140 a month people receive is a corporate benefit courtesy of us.

That money went straight into the hands of a $23 billion dollar corporation. Why even bother to give it poor people first. There job is just to give it to its final corporate destination.

Does anyone really think these billions of dollars run through social programs to corporations is going away anytime soon?

There are plenty of known frauds and money wasters for me to get workup over without worrying about the person in front of me at the grocery store who I don't know anything about.

I have a relative that adopted a "hard to place" child who was in custody of the state. They receive benefits for him even though they are OK financially. But it does help relieve them of the burden of some of his needs and is cheaper for tax payers than having him in the system. It is certainly better for the child and I believe the return to society to have him raised in loving home is a great investment for all.

I think there are many reasons this woman could have been using this card you were looking at and without knowing all the circumstances of her life I am not going to accuse her of not being a legal beneficiary. Life is too short and there are too many people walking hard paths that may not be obvious to the casual observer.

wow - someone really gets it - well done. Don't hold your breath waiting for many to agree - but you are 100% correct.

to Pale horse - a quote to remember -

everyone one you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about

Don't assume you know what others are going through - next time you have that feeling - say a prayer of thanks it is not you, and a prayer for them for what ever they are going through.

The primary being that her household income is probably less than $3,000 a month with kids.

I don't know if people are unaware of pawn shops, consignment shops, thrift stores, flea markets, garage sales, TJ Maxx, Ross and websites like Kingwood Yard Sales, EBay, Craigslist, etc. but, they do exist and sell all sorts of high end items.

MK has merchandise at Ross and TJ Maxx. There's a shop in Kingwood called Designer Consigner that sells all the name brands, they're used, but in excellent condition. Pawn shops carry jewelry worth thousands that you pay hundreds for, not too mention a lot of jewelry can be fake! CZ rings can fool a lot of people. You can do your own hair and nails at home for pennies on the dollar and still look like a million bucks. So, to assume someone is a high roller because of their outward appearance, is asinine.

Oh Lord..These corporations have absolutely zero influence on Texas' welfare programs. Actually, there are thousands upon thousands of folks that take that card and take it to one of those small places in strip centers that sell seafood. We've all seen them. We've all asked ourselves, "why would anyone buy seafood from such a sketchy looking place?".

The seafood place will sell them a catfish filet for the amount on the card and then for a fee, rebate the balance to them in cash. In other words, they launder the money on the card.

So, the recipient then uses the money to pay other bills such as electricity, gas, water and trash. Do you think that conspiracy runs all the way as deep as our public utilities....lol?

I have some advice for you. Heed your own advice. Or, keep it to yourself.

Exactly

Do you think that conspiracy runs all the way as deep as our public utilities.

It's not a conspiracy. It's a straight up influence game. Kroger, HEB, Marsh, et al will fight you if you try to reduce SNAP benefits.

Does it surprise anyone that no one is touching these funds in Washington? It's an economic boost to fund job creators. The poor people that run through the money don't matter one bit.

Dorothy Parker --- 5 years ago -

you. Heed your own advice. Or, keep it to yourself.?

That's ironic coming from you, since this entire post is about you minding someone else's business with zero information to go on.

Lmao!

In line at HEB and the 30 something mother in front of me has the latest I-phone, expensive yoga pants, MK purse. Kids are well dressed with expensive shoes. She buys sugary cereals, Cokes and other sugary drinks and not the cheapest frozen foods.

Then she pays with a Lone Star card.

Agree - mea culpa. Have a good day

AMDG --- 5 years ago -

spending on social programs is the single best economic stimulant we have - since just about every dollar given, gets spent in the economy.

And if we ended all social spending ended tomorrow - your taxes would not change one penny.

Theoretically - federal taxes sole purpose is to control inflation. The government could burn every tax dollar it receives and not touch spending one bit.

On a practical or cynical sense - taxes change occasionally , get called different things occasionally, but they never go down - Washington will always find something to spend them on.

Do like Wisconsin does: If they get pregnant while on benefits, they lose all benefits.

I think the "labor" requirement has more to do with working while on benefits.
