We had a similar problem and it turned out to be Army Worms. They can eat a yard pretty quickly. Lawn company treated them with pesticide.

I used Russ with Certapro painters in Humble. They painted the interior of our house and were fantastic. They cleaned up each day and made sure everything was perfect before I signed off on the job.
