My mom is the kitchen playing "Go Fish" with my little one right now......Little one just turned 4, so doesn't quite get it all the way yet. She keeps telling my mom the card she picks every time she picks! lol ~ And my I keep hearing my mom telling her, "Don't tell me what you've got!".....I'm cringing!! It sounds so wrong to me!! (Yes, I cringe over silly things,....sorry)....Anyway....after about the fifth time of hearing her say that, I yelled out, "Don't tell me what YOU HAVE....NOT WHAT YOU'VE GOT!!"....... My mother is telling me I'm crazy! She is stating that she is not using inproper english...... It just does not sound right to me......nor does it sound right to my 15 year old dd...... I tried googling it, and couldn't find anything..... ANYONE?? LOL

GCan --- 15 years ago -

It's have, not got. It's like people say "I have got to...." Dad's English teacher would get livid when he heard that.

AuthorMan --- 15 years ago -

'you have' sounds better.

GCan --- 15 years ago -

I don't see anything that says it's wrong...but that just might mean that people have adapted it to the lexicon after time.

sunshine1881 --- 15 years ago -

If you are looking at proper English, both "got" and "get" should be thrown out.

goots1 --- 15 years ago -

Did you mean she is not using IMPROPER english? LOL

Melissa --- 15 years ago -

Well, not sure if this helps any but... You've got = You have got. So essentially she is saying "Don't tell me what you have got."

Sue --- 15 years ago -

I am a retired language arts teacher, and she should say I have, not I've got. That means I have got-wrong grammar.

Unichic™ --- 15 years ago -

Either way! I say "have got" and I looked it up and the British tend to say "have got" more often than the Americans. Canadians follow the British writing and English styles, so this makes sense.

Jpgirl --- 15 years ago -

You've got to be kidding me! :-) Seriously. I would give anything for my mom to be here right now playing Go Fish and I would hug her even if she said "I ain't got none." Those are small petty things. Cherish these days because soon your little one won't be little and your Mom won't be here. But yes by all means tell her she's wrong

But yes by all means tell her she's wrong I knew someone was going to say something like that.......We're not ARGUING about it, I said something sounded wrong, and she disagreed. I would NEVER "argue" with my mom about something like that.....I love AND cherish my mother mother very much and tell her that almost daily....... I just KNEW someone would say something like that!! lol

Verbal communication is correct, as long as your meaning is conveyed. Never correct anyone's verbal grammar.

love4bdd --- 15 years ago -

Never correct anyone's verbal grammar It's family.....It's ok......

Unichic™ --- 15 years ago -

You've got to be kidding me! :-) Yep, it's true lol.

Some people don't talk good.

Deltadawn --- 15 years ago -

All though it a small thing, there is one case of poor grammar that drives me batty, so much so that I stopped watching a TV show that I enjoyed with exception of the listening to the people repeatedly doing this; saying "me and _____," it should be _____ and me. When ever I hear it, it is like nails on a chalk board.

GCan --- 15 years ago -

Actually I think it's suppose to be "and I." It's one of grammar peeves as well.

Mabbers --- 15 years ago -

It's have, ain't not got. LOL. But I can let it slide in casual conversations. And the you and I stuff irritates me as well. I don't understand how people get that so confused. You should be able to have a complete sentence without it. You and I are going to town. (I am going to town. Me is NOT going to town. LOL) He loves to be with you and me. (He loves to be with me. NOT He loves to be with I). EVERYONE gets that wrong. Grr.

Jpgirl --- 15 years ago -

Sorry-just a bit sensitive right now. My mom died 7 years ago from breast cancer and now my dad is in the hospital with a broken hip,has been fighting bladder cancer, has emphysema, and dementia. I miss those days when my parents were healthy and my kids were young and we had family get togethers playing cards. I know at times I was irrited by both my kids and my parents but from where I sit now those times being irritated were wasted moments.

We should be allowed those from time to time. I'm sorry about what happened to you. I still grieve our family tragedies daily; however, I can still have pet peeves.

GCan --- 15 years ago -

JP...don't be too hard on yourself. As someone who doesn't have her mom anymore, I'm hypersensitive when I hear others speak about their moms. I get envious when they share a happy moment and get annoyed when it appears they are griping. That's natural. My husband would always tell me that one day every cross word I had with my mother would come back as regret when I no longer had her. He was so right.

Although it is a small thing, there is one case of poor grammar that drives me batty. I even stopped watching a TV show that I enjoyed because the people repeatedly said "me and _____" when it should have been "_____ and me."
