So I was telling one of dh's friends about this thing my car is doing, and he said that him and dh already discussed what it was... The alternator is going out. GREAT! Like I have the effing money for that! I guess I will just ride it until it dies lol. Then come up with a way to get it. God, When do I get a break? Anytime soon?

a few years ago my alternator went out, and i was able to get a used one for much cheaper and it lasted me another year or so. the garage i took it too offered a used one rather than a new one. i dont know if there are any garages like that here, but you might ask before shelling out a lot of money. i think the one i got was around $40. sorry youre having a tough time, girl, i hope things get better.

check the junkyards. they usually have wrecked cars that have perfectly good alternators and they'll sell it to you cheap. you just need to negotiate wiht them. then you take it to a shop and have them put it in

I dont have a problem having someone putting it in, my dh or my dad can do that, its just the buying part lol. My dad is a mechanic and Ill have to tell him to go find me a cheap one that will hopefull last long enough until either A. Dh gets a callback or myself from a job which Im up to about 50+ applications for myself and about the same for dh or B. There are places out there that will rebuild your alternator. If your father is a mechanic, he should be able to find you a place. I had one rebuilt once because you never know what you may get with a used one. Good Luck !

There's a place in Cleveland, right off Washington Street to your right after CVS and all that that rebuilds alternators. We had them rebuild dh's a few years back. It was like $40 and we never had another problem with it. 

I have replaced alternators before. They are not hard to replace, if they are easy to get to. The worst part is getting the belt back on. The problem is, most cars today have the engine crammed in such a small space, you have to take the engine out just to replace a part. At least get the part. Most shops mark up the part price on your bill. That way you only pay for labor.
