What can you tell me about Northeast Christian Academy? Looking specifically for feedback about the elementary level. Thanks.

What can you tell me about Northeast Chris Nothing! I know nothing!!!

Good school. Love the 1st and 2nd grade teacher! You are paying for a small ratio, christian environment...but don't expect miracles. They struggle just like any other school. All schools have their problems but I love having my kids there better than public. They are socially wehre they should be and not being "socially" educated before their years. Academically... doing great. They are age appropriate and loving it.

SpottedPuppy --- 14 years ago -

Any thoughts on the middle school? We are considering it. I realize it is a small school, but I fear it may be TOO small...

MxMike. --- 14 years ago -

My buddy was forced to go there as a kid and he absolutely HATED it.

SpottedPuppy --- 14 years ago -

Crap. That is not what I wanted to hear. :(. Do you know why he hated it?

AFWife --- 14 years ago -

I've heard from a handful of people that had switched their kids from another private school to NCA that they were treated like peons so they took their children out.

whatchamacallit --- 14 years ago -

The teachers do not watch the students that are outside for recess and PE well enough. The older children run on Hamblen Rd. and either do not know or care about getting hit by a car. The younger children are allowed to run into the street to retrieve balls and other playthings without supervision and I have come close to hitting a child there on more than one occasion. I drive like an old Grandma so it isn't that I am going too fast!

My sister and cousin go to Christian School of Kingwood. It is now located in the old Kingwood Athletic Club building. This school has been around for a long time. My sister and cousin attended CSK from basically birth through sixth grade. They left at that time, because CSK did not offer anything higher and went to Humble Christian. When CSK decided to include a high school program this year they returned to CSK to finish their junior and senior year.

SpottedPuppy --- 14 years ago -

I have looked in to CSK, too. Would be grateful for more opinions on either school.

MxMike. --- 14 years ago -

Im not sure why he didn't like it...he went there in middle...hated it...finally got switched to public school again.

Then he tried again in 10th grade because his parents wanted him to go there, hated it again and once again switched back to public school.

thankfulformyfour --- 14 years ago -

My kids (now in HS) went to Humble Christian School....would look at CSK or Northeast.

planemom --- 14 years ago -

Make up a list of questions and go to NCA, CSK, ect.. Find the school that fits you and your child. Each family has different experiences.

My children don't attend there. However, over the years we have live here I have heard both good and bad things regarding NCA. It's like any other school. Some people will love it, some will hate it, and others have no opinion. The few people I know who work there are good people.

sweetpea* --- 14 years ago -

My previous neighbor took her kids out of KHS (the kids were involved with the wrong crowd) and enrolled them in NCA hoping to get them on the right track. It didn't solve the problem for them. Sorry don't know more than that.

Kids Incorporated --- 14 years ago -

We love CSK and would not move unless we have no other choice.

midland --- 14 years ago -

my son went to NCA, and it all depends on the class...each class is different. There is a bully in the 7th grade and we pulled my son mid year. I will not pay that much for my son to be picked...especially when the classes are so small.

Carla --- 14 years ago -

My previous neighbor took her kids out of KHS (the kids were involved with the wrong crowd) and enrolled them in NCA hoping to get them on the right track.

I went to a private Christian school from 3rd to 9th grade.

I can't remember one time that when a parent put their kid in the school because they "had problems" or had "fallen in with the wrong crowd" where it worked out.

They still got in trouble at the private school and most of the time ended up getting kicked out.

You bring your problems with you where ever you go. If a child has a problem with discipline or obeying authority, work on it at home or send them to boot camp.

ForestMama --- 14 years ago -

They are socially wehre they should be and not being "socially" educated before their years.

I'd have to disagree with that, at least in generalizing the school/student body. My daughter knows several kids who attend there, and some who have moved on to other Christian high schools, and they most certainly DO get socialized in a lot of the things they ought not to at that age. Just because it's a "Christian" school, does not make the children that attend there any better than those who attend public school, etc. Kids are kids, and are products of their homelife and backgrounds, good OR bad.

If you want your child to go there, I believe it would be a good education, but don't let your guard down just because it's a "Christian" school. You still have to be vigilant on what your children are exposed to, or what they learn from their peers.

HsMommy --- 14 years ago -

Kids are kids, and are products of their homelife and backgrounds, good OR bad.

The most true statement 99.9% of the time.

thankfulformyfour --- 14 years ago -

About 15 years ago there were some boys who were kicked out of a local school district so their parents put them in a local private school...do your homework.

Things happen in private schools too....

dc1551 --- 14 years ago -

I have had two kids in NCA. One transfered in midway through 10th grade as KHS was unequipped to deal with our situation and another in 10th, for the sole purpose of increasing confidence through smaller class size. Both have done wonderfully. My youngest is doing great in public school. All schools have their issues. Don't count anything out before visiting the school and meeting with the Principal Brad Baggett. Education, private or public, is a personal decision, largely dependent on the needs of the child. Beware of disgruntled parents from both venues, they will skew your opinion, sometimes unjustly. (fyi, kids are not treated like peons there) Also, remember, private schools draw from the same population surrounding you; there is no magic to keeping the bad behavior only in public schools. The key is in how the teachers and administration deal with it. My experience has been good in terms of this.

mommie21g1b --- 14 years ago -

A good private school will not allow students with behavior problems to attend. JMO. My daughter is in a private school and there has NEVER been a real behavior issue with any of the students in her classes. If a private school can't deal with a student, they can (unlike public schools) kick them out.

Tweety Bird --- 14 years ago -

All schools have issues...my kids attend NCA and are doing great. Yes, not every teacher is perfect, and not every kid is perfect, however I would not change them to another school at this point. Academically and socially they are right where they need to be and I have a handle on who they are hanging with... The families that send there kids here actually care where their kids are and who they are with...comforting for me when they ask to do something. The girls for the most part are right on target for middle school girls, not constantly doing the mean girl thing, worried about make-up, sex, etc. Of course their are exceptions, maybe one or two. Classes are so small they are like families, more like brothers and sisters. They care about each other and look out for each other. You have an opinion there b/c you are paying tuition. You don't have to go through red - tape when you want to see your kid, or get involved. I would not change it! I recommend it!

MomofTwins* --- 14 years ago -

TB - Thank you for the update. Since our school appears to be part movie theater (Toy Story in 4th grade - REALLY?), we are always on the lookout for other options. Are they currently taking applications for the Fall?

ShookUpRamen --- 14 years ago -

Principal Brad Baggett

The pastor at Grace Reformed Baptist Church?

Tweety Bird --- 14 years ago -

Mom of Twins -Yes they are taking applications. What grade are you interested in? It has a lot of good points, small classes, a chance to participate in athletics, a great elementary music program, etc. I really do recommend it overall. I know several kids that have graduated from NCA and all said they were ahead of the game for first year of college. Most of the kids there are goal oriented, as always some exceptions...lol. You should go check it out. Some of the younger classes will fill up. Seems like more people are checking into private school with all the bogus stuff going on with public education and funding, etc.

ShookUpRamen- Yes to Brad Baggett.

sportmom --- 14 years ago -

Hey TB - thanks for info. Looking forward to checking it out!

Tweety Bird --- 14 years ago -

No problem, my kids went to public school at first but we are much happier in private. We see the difference. Soon they will be out and off to college and I feel confident. Not much longer left...

labx2 --- 14 years ago -

Just saw this question regarding NCA. We have two children at NCA and could not be happier with the education our children receive, as well as the friendships they have developed. It is a wonderful school and if you are considering a private school, you should visit NCA. Have your children shadow a day at NCA to see if the school is a fit for your children. You will also see that children are always supervised inside and outside, they do not run around on Hamblen Road and are not treated as peons! The administrator of the school, Brad Baggett, grew up in Kingwood and is a West Point graduate. There is structure, organization and accountability under his administration.

NCA is a college preparatory school. Students that graduate from NCA are well equipped for college. Most teachers at NCA have their master's degrees and there are several teachers with doctorate degrees. The students are not numbers, their teachers know and care for them. Students receive an exceptional classical education in a Christian environment.

As you are visiting private schools, be sure and have a list of questions with you. Ask about the student/teacher ratio. Ask if the teachers are certified and how many actually have masters and doctorate degrees. Ask to see a list of the college and universities their students are accepted into, as well as those they have graduated from. Ask if the school is accredited and through what organization or organizations. Ask about the financial stability of the school - ask if they share their financial statements with the parents. If not, why not? If your children are in middle school or high school, ask about the sports program and extra curricular activities.

Good luck. I hope you find the school that is a perfect fit for you and your family.

Bump. KU, could anyone provide an update on this topic/school.. Thanks, in advance, your insight !

BalletMom --- 9 years ago -

Still bumping :)

NCA is in the process of becoming The Covenant Preparatory School. See this video.

They have purchased land on Northpark and plan on building a new campus there. Click for article They eventually plan on maxing out at about 45 per grade, which makes it smaller that the traditional, downtown private school (average 100-125 per grade) though significantly larger than what it is now. (Class of 2020 has 7-8 in the class).

I think that in 5 years, or so, it will be a great alternative to the public school system. It's a good school, but I feel growth needs to be made in the upper school in order for it to be a true alternative through 12th grade.
