Many say set out a bowl of vinegar water..mixed with dish washing soap. You can also try spraying the vinegar around, and pour some down the drain..

Panties' Revenge --- 14 years ago -

Yep, I've used the vinegar too.

I hate those little suckers!

Curley --- 14 years ago -

Thnak you I will try that

Sandyr9111 --- 14 years ago -

Clean the sink really well and you can also run vinegar and baking soda down the drain....it will help clean out if u have any food lodged in it which is normally the problem. Plunge too if ya can.

They are coming out of the bathroom drains to. We get this **** every year

Deltadawn --- 14 years ago -

Also helps to close or block the drains at night.

fabforty --- 14 years ago -

Put ammonia in all of the drains and close them for about 30 minutes. Then run hot water for a few minutes. I tried the vinegar thing and the wine as well and it takes a while for you to get them all with those methods.

4boys --- 14 years ago -

I tried the above but also put vegetable oil around the rim of the sink and that helped catch them.

I clean my drains with baking soda and then pour vinigar over the soda...the kids love to watch!!lol. but I don't think that I've ever seen these.... maybe I just hadn't noticed them.

Panties' Revenge --- 14 years ago -

maybe I just hadn't noticed them.

You'd notice! They totally fly up your nose and around your face. UGH, I can't stand them!

Ok!! I'll be using drian cleaner all the more, that would freak me out!!!! i don't do bugs at the best of times!!

Jano --- 14 years ago -

I have figured out that if you leave out a glass of wine, the little buggers will take a sip and drown. I found this out by default but it works.

The best product we've used is called Drain Gel. This will deter those pesky gnats from reproducing in your drains. Another added bonus of this product is it keeps your drain running clear. Use it often and order online for the best price.

If anyone is having a problem with gnats like I am, here is some decent info I found:

you have to use the industrial bleach pour it down the drain then put a cup of dawn with water near the drain. they will be drawn to it and die. another thing put draino pipe cleaner down then foam stuff and it will clean the pipes they are coming up from.

AngieKaye --- 13 years ago -

oh and after pouring the industrial bleach you must put the drain plugs in all day, that way they will die and the fumes will stay in the pipes. Also plug the bathroom ones. Might also go pour it out the kitchen pipe outside.

Diamom --- 13 years ago -

Bleach and other chemicals kill the fly and the larvae BUT DO NOT kill the eggs. They lay eggs in the sludge in your drain. These gnats are called drain flies.

I have not the wiki article above but you need to use an enzyme cleaner that eats the sludge in the drain clearing away what they lay eggs in & are attracted to. We purchased one at Moore supply that seems to have helped.

Google how to get rid of drain flies for other cleaners.

I also found that citrus, fruit or floral dish soaps seem to attract them. So far, switching to blue Dawn seems to have helped.

We they are bad in the kitchen, I do put put out a mixture of cider vinegar and dish soap to attract them. The soap coats the wings and kills them.

Ughhhh! I hate bugs in my house. ANY bugs! But unfortunately, that is the way of it from season to season here in Houston. I just heard bananas carry fruit flies?
