I"m not saying the sky is falling I'm just saying this is an interesting development. But hey, according to some people we aren't even supposed to be hear after December 21 anyways right? LOL

It should be interesting to see how this develops, all we have right now is what Nasa is saying. It's not an ELI but it's big enough to certainly have an impact on our planet.

To avert a possible catastrophe – this time set for February 2013 – scientists suggest confronting asteroid 2012 DA14 with either paint or big guns. The stickler is that time has long run out to build a spaceship to carry out the operation.

NASA's data shows the 60-meter asteroid, spotted by Spanish stargazers in February, will whistle by Earth in 11 months. Its trajectory will bring it within a hair’s breadth of our planet, raising fears of a possible collision.

The asteroid, known as DA14, will pass by our planet in February 2013 at a distance of under 27,000 km (16,700 miles). This is closer than the geosynchronous orbit of some satellites.

There is a possibility the asteroid will collide with Earth, but further calculation is required to estimate the potential threat and work out how to avert possible disaster, NASA expert Dr. David Dunham told students at Russia’s University of Electronics and Mathematics.

“The Earth’s gravitational field will alter the asteroid’s path significantly. Further scrupulous calculation is required to estimate the threat of collision,” said Dr. Dunham, as transcribed by Russia’s Izvestia. “The asteroid may break into dozens of small pieces, or several large lumps may split from it and burn up in the atmosphere. The type of the asteroid and its mineral structure can be determined by spectral analysis. This will help predict its behavior in the atmosphere and what should be done to prevent the potential threat,” said Dr. Dunham.

In the event of a collision, scientists have calculated that the energy released would equate to the destructive power of a thermo-nuclear bomb.

In response to the threat, scientists have come up with some ingenious methods to avert a potential disaster.

With the asteroid zooming that low, it will be too late to do anything with it besides trying to predict its final destination and the consequences of impact.

A spaceship is needed, experts agree. It could shoot the rock down or just crash into it, either breaking the asteroid into debris or throwing it off course.

“We could paint it,” says NASA expert David Dunham.

Paint would affect the asteroid’s ability to reflect sunlight, changing its temperature and altering its spin. The asteroid would stalk off its current course, but this could also make the boulder even more dangerous when it comes back in 2056, Aleksandr Devaytkin, the head of the observatory in Russia’s Pulkovo, told Izvestia.

Spaceship impossible?

Whatever the mission, building a spaceship to deal with 2012 DA14 will take two years – at least.

The asteroid has proven a bitter discovery. It has been circling in orbit for three years already, crossing Earth’s path several times, says space analyst Sergey Naroenkov from the Russian Academy of Sciences. It seems that spotting danger from outer space is still the area where mere chance reigns, while asteroid defense systems exist only in drafts.

Still, prospects of meeting 2012 DA14 are not all doom and gloom.

“The asteroid may split into pieces entering the atmosphere. In this case, most part of it will never reach the planet’s surface,” remarks Dunham.

But if the entire asteroid is to crash into the planet, the impact will be as hard as in the Tunguska blast, which in 1908 knocked down trees over a total area of 2,150 sq km (830 sq miles) in Siberia. This is almost the size of Luxembourg. In today’s case, the destination of the asteroid is yet to be determined.

Lol @ conspiracy theory website.

Here's the impact risk Chart for DA 14.

Here's the current impact chart updated today which shows all current impact risks.

I never, ever, would listen nor read a conspiracy website. The bloat the truth, and shape it to fit their agenda.

Lol @ conspiracy theory website.

What in the heck are you talking about? You just linked the two NASA sites that were linked the original article. I'm not sure what "Conspiracy" website you are referring to.

The video and the article posted above shows the data from NASA's websites.

Also the article stated clearly, "Still, prospects of meeting 2012 DA14 are not all doom and gloom.

“The asteroid may split into pieces entering the atmosphere. In this case, most part of it will never reach the planet’s surface,” remarks Dunham."

It amazes me how little people know about conspiracies or conspiracy theories. People think that just because they don't understand something or find it too outrageous to believe that it must be a conspiracy theory or even a lie.

This is not a conspiracy but it is projected charts that NASA has put together.

I never, ever, would listen nor read a conspiracy website. The bloat the truth, and shape it to fit their agenda.

That's just sad, it really is. I'm not sure where you get your news from but I PROMISE you it is bloated, filtered, and manipulated to fit someone's agenda.

It's HERE!

One meteor so far falls to earth, best entry, impact video of a meteor impact ever made.

Mystry, it's also on the cover page of MSN if that's any easier..:)

I AM Innocent --- 12 years ago -

thank you rev and saga so much. i'm gonna gander at it now

I AM Innocent --- 12 years ago -

wow! that was cool. That was no conspiracy. Now maybe folks will listen to your warnings. YOU KNOW WHAT U R TALKING ABOUT.

It wasn't DA14 start streaked across Russia. If it were that area would be GONE given the fact that DA14 160ft ACROSS.

NEVER said it was.

Loki --- 12 years ago -

Wasn't da14 and not in swarm. Wrong entry angle.

But, yet another reason to increase our space tech. Countless other unknown and undetected objects are out there and are on a collision course.

Most will burn up as this one did. But one day, there will be one that won't. And ya'll have NO idea how close we've come in the recent past...

The luddites say "NASA is such a waste of money!" and cut funding. When Nemesis arrives it will be "Why didn't you do something!!!".

Give us the tools to save the world.

It's impressive to me that I could post a story about a 60-meter asteroid, and someone relates my most recent post to my believing that a 60-meter asteroid made impact today. Come on people, READ.

Thanks Fluffy for reminding me why I quit posting on her.

I don't think you were being "chastised". There are a lot of people here on the low end of the bell curve who might have been confused. I think she was just clarifying it for those people, as I was.

rEVOLution --- 12 years ago -

I got ya Lancelot. Her posting on here sort of brought back to the front what she had posted last year that this was from a conspiracy website, then posted her "official" links that were to the same website. Maybe she meant no harm. If that's the case, my apologies to her.

sunshine1881 --- 12 years ago -

Great video. Thanks for posting Rev. Really scary.

rEVOLution --- 12 years ago -

So to clarify to anyone who might think I've lost my mind. I am NOT saying that todays "Meteor" was the "Asteroid" making impact. The asteroid is HUGE and is thousands of miles from earth. However, I do think that we will see some pretty nasty earth changes as this thing passes by. Large earthquakes and other natural disasters "could" result from it's gravitational pull.

rEVOLution --- 12 years ago -

more great shots of this thing entering.

Polly Ester --- 12 years ago -

wow- that is amazing video.

Loki --- 12 years ago -

Not from this one. The gravitational pull is almost non existent at this size. I'm too tired (and still sick) so not writing out all the gobbly gook to go with this... but this stuff is my background (years ago though). Someone else familiar with gravity / mass calcs can fill in.

SagaciousSighFiGurl (Mod) --- 12 years ago -

OK, I'm going back in my bunker. LOL

I always found your stuff interesting and fascinating. Not that I believe or even understand it all but it was always interesting.

What people forget is that even conspiracy theories contain facts, and facts are always pertinent and valuable no matter what you believe. :)

SagaciousSighFiGurl (Mod) --- 12 years ago -

I wish we could have seen that here. LOL. I know, that's nuts, but seeing nature flex her muscles in the sky above you like that is awesome stuff, especially if it don't kill you in the process. :P

Wow... I posted what I posted because of what MYSTRY said. Their assumptions of it being DA14 really annoyed me. Perhaps I should have quoted them.

Work in Progress --- 12 years ago -

I've been watching the videos being posted. Terrifying!

It left an 8 meter hole in the ice of the lake where it landed.

They thought they were under attack! I would have thought that too if I heard something like that, that blew out my windows.

Fun facts

Mass of Earth: 5.976e+24 kg

Mass of DA14: 1.3e+7 kg

DA14 is 0.00000000000000021% mass of earth

Moon is 0.012 % of earth

---

Closest est. of DA14 approach to Earth is 2.77e+7 M

Acceleration effects of DA14 on earth at closet approach
0.00000000000000000113 m/s2

Acceleration effects of earth on Human at surface
9.822 m/s2

Acceleration effects of an apple on human at 1 meter in dead space (discounting effect of Earth acceleration)
0.00000000008004 m/s2

So basically, the gravitational effect DA14 would have on the Earth would be VASTLY less than a dust mote floating by your head.

I think there is some confusion b/w gravitational force and acceleration. An overall Grav Force b/w a huge object and a small one... is huge. But the effect on the large object is negligible. Example, the grav force in this case is 6753365 Newtons... seems like a lot. But not to Earth. It's the acceleration rate that really matters and that is dependent on the the individual object's mass.

Now, here's the real fun part.

The Earth's gravitational acceleration WILL have a real effect on DA14.
0.5194896323423999 m/s2 to be exact

There is a possibility that it will shake it up, cause fractures and so forth... that can alter it's course the next time around.

Same goes for all near earth encounters. Things change. So today's non threat could easily become a nightmare on the next cycle.

So, the real truth is folks, just because it is thought that an object will be so and so distant from Earth the next go around doesn't mean that it will be. No way to account for all "Space Weather".

We really need to have some capability to knock this stuff off course if necessary.

See, we really DO need NASA...who knew.

So Lancelot, you are saying that I can't blame the asteroid for my weight gain, and that the world might get hit the next time it passes by? How long till the earth ends, I'll decide if it is worth it to crash diet or not.

Way to burst my bubble.

Loki --- 12 years ago -

So Lancelot, you are saying that I can't blame the asteroid for my weight gain

Sorry, not really. But take heart, when the moon is directly above, it's gravitational effect lowers weight by .00034%. That's when I weigh myself.

and that the world might get hit the next time it passes by?

Of the known objects, 2029 poses the next close shave (by Apophis). So, if you can get that crash diet done by then, you'll be fine.

Please, don't forget to diet before the Rapture. Only the skinny will be transported upward.

Yep!
We do have a missile defense system that we could use.
