Zionist NightOwl --- 14 years ago -

I first heard about this modern day treasure hunting years ago, but we never partook of it.

We found our first geocache today. It's amazing how many of these are right under our noses and we've never been aware of them. We were able to bike to, and find, 4 of them in under an hour, and there are still many more within biking distance from our house without crossing any major intersections.

It's difficult finding hobbies that interest 2 very different adults, a teen, and a ten-yr. old. This was a lot of fun for all 4 of us; both the kids liked it very much. Mom and Dad liked that it got all of us off the PC's, out of the house, and on our bikes. We'll definitely continue with this hobby.

I think our next endeavor is going to be to create our own treasure trove to share.

All you need to know to get started:

It's a lot of fun, but more fun when it is not so hot outside :) I have an app on my phone now that makes it even easier than it was...very cool!

geocaching is a great time with the family. You never know who you will meet doing it too.

Yes, we used the free trial app, but afterwards, DS said, "Mom, I think this is worth the $10 to buy the complete app." DH and I agreed so we bought it.

I'm looking forward to things cooling down a bit so we can hit a few of the new caches that have come up and do maintenance on ours.

lol.

We always try to get up early on Saturdays, but there's always someone. . . . (usually me, but not today).

The heat wore us out, so we biked on home and endeavored to try again another day.

My son has a number of geocaches hidden in KW....
We have been geocaching for a few years. He has a Garmin but my free phone app seems to work just as well.

We love to go. I went out a couple of weekends ago, but it was wayyyyyyy too hot. We will be back at it when it cools down a bit.

DH & I have been wanting to start doing this with our girls. We have some friends up North that are really into it.

I didn't realize geocaching been around this long. I just heard about it last week. Did our first hunt Friday night with group of 8 - had loads of fun. We're hooked - beware of flashlights looming the greenbelts for treasures....

Do we need a gadget? Like a garmin GPS ? Or will a smartphone, like Samsung or android work?
