NICKLE PICKLE --- 14 years ago -

Just interested to see what you feed your dogs. I have done so much research on dog & cat food, so I am just curious to see what everyone is feeding their precious critters.

I've recently switched to Taste of the Wild. It is rated as a Category 6 food according to www.dogfoodanalysis.com, which is the highest rating of dog foods available. My dogs love it. There are no grains, and it is a high quality protein. They sell it a Tractor Supply in Porter. It's $22.99 for a 15 lb. bag or $42.99 for a 30 lb. bag. They carry 3 different varieties.

It just kills me when I see people feeding their dogs, Ol Roy, Purina Dog Chow, Pedigree (although I think Pedigree does wonderful things for the shelter dogs), the food is not that great! I have to question what are meat by-products?? Meat what kind of meat? Ground Yellow Corn, this causes so many skin allergies. What surprises me is how much corn goes in cat food. Does a cat even consume corn in the wild?? NO NO NO.

Nutro dry food with a scoop of One twice a day.

rainy33 --- 14 years ago -

We used Nutro until my dog was switched to a prescription diet.

karma --- 14 years ago -

Recently switched to Acana "Wild Prarie". I buy it at Pampered Paws. It's made by the company who makes Orijen and it's amazing quality but just a little less protein so it's 20 bucks cheaper :D

Be careful with TOTW. I didn't realize it was
made by Diamond until Jamie at PP told me and diamond has been involved with almost every big food recall. Was thinking about using TOTW buy hate that diamond manufactures it :(

Natures Logic-Pampered Paws

NICKLE PICKLE --- 14 years ago -

Did my research on Diamond Foods, they've had 2 recalls. One was 8 years ago, and has since changed products and the last was the big recall with the wheat gluten that was manufactured in china with the melamine. Several dog food companies had to recall their foods. TOTW does not use any grains in this line of food, and I just read they now preserve their fish meal with mixed tocopherols (not sure how to spell). There are only a few dog food companies who can make that claim according to the dog food analysis website. I think Wellness is one of them as well. i tried Natures Variety Prairie and Instinct for a while, but my dogs breath was so bad I could stand it. All of my dogs breath was terrible. Once I switched, the bad breath stopped! I put them on Wellness for a while, Nature's Recipe Salmon & Pumpkin which they loved, but made by Del Monte so I took them off. Tried a brand called Dogswell, but it's pricey so couldn't keep them on it. Just switched them to TOTW, and so far so good.

RedMulch --- 14 years ago -

I feed them my ex-husbands.......

JK...no dog here, only cats and they eat Meow Mix

MomofTwins* --- 14 years ago -

We just switched our dogs from Eukanuba Large Breed Weight Control to Wellness Super5Mix Large Breed. WShen you put the kibbles next to each other, the Eukanuba one looks grey and gross compared to the Wellness. The dogs definitely seem to like the Wellness more. They are on just dry for now, but I hope to start splitting a can between them once a day to add variety.

BoxerMama --- 14 years ago -

Nature's Variety Prarie kibbles and Prarie instinct raw frozen from Pampered Paws. No allergies since switching! They love it!!!

Erica --- 14 years ago -

Nutro Senior. My old man has a sensitive stomach and skin, but not since eating this stuff. We love it.

ladybeachbum --- 14 years ago -

Costco brand with chicken or lamb first ingredient. They think they have to have a scrambled egg or canned food added. They are so spoiled.

probably other ku'ers

Glad to see that sense of humor, JL.....lol

mamadog53 --- 14 years ago -

We switched from Nutro to Wellness a few months ago. My dogs aren't picky and will eat anything that doesn't get to them first. LOL

truthmiser --- 14 years ago -

Nutro dry and Nutro canned. The dogs love it.

Aiemzee --- 14 years ago -

Science Diet Lamb & Rice.. small bite when I can find it. One of my dogs has a sensitive stomach and the vet recommended this along with putting his bowl up higher so he didn't have to put his head down so far to eat. It works! Very rarely does it come back up. It's a bit expensive but I only buy at Petco so that I can get the free bag of dogfood after we buy 6 or 7 bags (can't remember exactly how many you have to buy to get the free one.)

Tootsieboo --- 14 years ago -

Blue (fish and sweet potatoe). I used to have my dogs on the Nutra Ulta dog food but switched to Blue and I can tell a major difference in one of my dogs. She has weak muscles due to a spinal cord stroke she had a few years ago and we've all noticed her energy level is up and she's moving more.

randyjet --- 14 years ago -

Purina one for our fur babies

royal canin chihuahua

susie q --- 14 years ago -

My JRT, who is going on 8, hasn't ever had anything but Science Diet Small Bites, except once a month on her heartworm pill day. Then she gets wet Pedigree.

ts_the1 --- 14 years ago -

I use Taste of the Wild (bison) on my Boxer/Labs and Nutro on all of my little guys. My Boxer/Labs have been on TOTW for a year and a half and they have done excellent. They are very healthy, their coats are awesome and they love it. I tried to switch to Wellness and Blue Wilderness but after a month, seven of my dogs got severely sick!

DogGoneStylin --- 14 years ago -

As a dog groomer I see skin allergy a lot..just like us...you wear what you eat. While I trust my vets advice, I also question my dogs health just as I would my own physicians advice. If it smells yeasty, what is my pet allergic too? I've seen and encouraged many pup peeps to look at what they are feeding their babies. I have seen many results with pampered paws suggestions! You must examine everything you feed...even their treats...no beggin strips or yeast products.

Here are the Rules for picking a dog food

1) No Corn, No Wheat, No Soy
2) #1 ingredient is a specific meat (not a generic "meat", "meat meal", or "meat product".
3) 3 of the top 5 ingredients should be a specific meat or meat product (i.e. "Chicken" fat - not "animal" fat)

Here are some other guidelines:

- Grains should be Whole Grains, and should be minimal if present at all, you can get all the starch you need from other sources
- Raw (frozen) is better than Not Raw
- Canned isn't necessarily better than kibble
- NO FOOD IS PERFECT. From time to time add some carrot, raw egg, broccoli spears, etc. and sometimes switch up their food altogether (i.e. a different brand/recipe, canned/kibble, frozen etc.

I feed my dogs Precise Foundation Chicken (It's the best kibble I can afford). I supplement as stated above.

I used to feed them Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul, but it's hard to find nearby.

Orijen is probably the best kibble, but Canidae, Innova-Evo, and a few of the others mentioned here are good too.

Anything Sold By Pampered Paws on Woodland Hills is a high quality product.

I've literally got spreadsheets of info that researched when looking into this. Just remember HIGH QUALITY FOODS ARE HIGHER CALORIE - you feed the dog less than with cheaper foods, so it's not that much more expensive than brands like Nutro

you can google other resources, but
The Dog Food Project is a great resource to start with.

Furby eats Kibbles and Bits. I fill up her LeBistro bowl and if she gets hungry she will eat on her own.

I use Blue Buffalo and for snacks they get stuff from Pampered Paws, Blue Buffalo treats and fresh veggies. They love fresh green beans and carrots.

What? You food your dog chihuauas?

karma --- 14 years ago -

My dogs also get raw meaty bones to keep their teeth clean. They really like the beef gullets, we're trying turkey necks today!

I know a lab is going to shed regardless, but has anyone seen a difference when switching to the better foods?
