So I'm watching the news and I can't believe what I'm hearing. The east coast IS STILL without power (3 days now) and everyone is up in arms and calling in the military to assist! The storm will cost more than any other in recent history...etc. I don't wish the wrath of mother nature on anyone, but I can't help but feel like "buck it up people!" Try being without power 14 days and in the HEAT unlike their beautiful weather...and calling in the military? Really? To protect all the estates? Speaking of which, do you know WHY it will be the most expensive storm? Not because of the extent of damage like what has happened on the gulf coast, No, because of the costly repairs to the million dollar vacation homes! You live on the coast people - deal with it or move! Ok, I feel better now...

I know, I know....funny thing is we don't really know what our coverage was after IKe because none of us had any power or TV. We were just talking about this today. Maybe we sounded as pitiful.

susie q --- 13 years ago -

I can remember sitting in an auditorium meeting, way over on the other side of town, from where I lived in Miami, when the Army Corp. of Engineers and Fema gave their big speeches. They were about as much help to us in Miami as nothing! I really can't see that anything much has changed with either of them in past years. It's the the same o, same o, alot of talk and nothing much positive happens.

during ike i flew to charlotte to work and on the sat after the storm our company had a family day picnic, they had a booth showing pics of the dammage and asking for help. they walked up to me and said can you please help our friends/co workers in houston.. when i told them i was from houston they were like " oh you poor thing" etc.. it was cute and funny..

Have you ever heard them whine back East? You'd want to shut them up, too! :)

We had every right to sound pitiful! :)

My hubbie and I were wondering the exact same thing today. Not to turn this into a bash Obama thing, but I truly think he's pandering to votes by throwing all this money at the situation by trying to seem like he's covering all the bases above and beyond. There's damage, and I've seen that, I just feel like he's making sure all those Northeasterners know he will give them all the money they need so they can fix there homes in time to vote for him in 2012.

Dorothy Parker --- 13 years ago -

wow...that's a stretch if ever I've read one...LOL!

Bush was from Texas, why didn't he help us faster during the 2008 Hurricane Ike? He was still the president when it hit, right? I guess he figured the GOP already had Texas in the bag, so, screw it! LOL!

Get a grip folks, not EVERYTHING is about freakin' Obama or right vs left! Good grief! :/

Oh yes it is! My Dh's left testicle is Republican and his right one is a Democrat. I'm not sure about his 3rd one though......

those must be some frisky balls! :D

sorry, I just get tired of the political banter sometimes.

ChrisC2011 --- 13 years ago -

Obama has to pander for votes since he has done nothing to earn the respect or votes from the people he was elected to represent.

Agreed...

As far as I have heard, the expensive homes on Long Island were not damaged. They expected flooding from the surge there but it just didn't happen. Not extensively anyway. LI rarely gets much more than street flooding usually.

The big destruction is in upstate NY and Vermont. Whole towns have washed away. Very sad.

ladybeachbum --- 13 years ago -

The expensive vacation homes will have INSURANCE. It will not cost the taxpayers anything. What will cost is roads and the infrastructure of things around the damaged area. What will cost will be the people that didn't buy flood insurance and then they had a flood.
