So I'm moving in a few weeks because I work for Southwest Airlines. Which place is better, (more stuff to do, less boring) Midland or Odessa?

Yikes. needs a none of the above.

And that's all I'm going to say about that.

Good luck. Enjoy the flat land.Odessa has the University. Probably would be more to do there?

~grandma again~ --- 13 years ago -

I was born and raised in Odessa. Spent lots of time in Midland those years too. I would say to ask for a transfer some place else already. lol.

Odessa was always known as the blue collar town and Midland as the white collar town. I am sure it is still that way.

There is nothing to do in either towns, no trees, no grass, very flat, lots of mesquites, rattle snakes and all sorts of things like that. Well, at one time Friday night football was pretty awesome! Lots and lots of Mexican food places is the best thing going for that area. The malls are lousy. Walmart is better than the malls.

Other than that......no way do i want to ever move back to that part of Texas again.

Sorry, but I just could not let you go there thinking it was going to be a good place to move to. Not in my opinion, anyway.

My condolences.

Yep. Being sent there isn't a transfer, it's banishment. It would take a hell of a lot of money to get me to move there, even if just for a few years. The one upside to it is that you can live out there super cheap, and manage to save a lot of money over the time you're there.

My niece lives in Midland lots of oil business there, not a lot to do. Odessa is a poorer town with even less to do. I would pick Midland of the two. Good Luck. All the above comments had me cracking up and feeling sorry for Cameron.

Both my sons were born in Midland. We never lacked for fun things to do, and the people there were so nice. I have heard that there's a lot more there now than when we lived there.

Porter Wagoner (Mod) --- 13 years ago -

Pasadena.

SagaciousSighFiGurl (Mod) --- 13 years ago -

Well, if you have to live there, oy.

But Fort Davis is 175 miles NE of there. It's gorgeous. If you like the outdoors, camping, hiking and other out door activities, it's a wonderful get a way place. They have a lodge built by state engineers waaay back that was used for workers, and Texas Wild life and Parks totally refurbished it and made it a hotel, it's a cool place. The land has a gorgeous landscape, they also have one of the best observatories in the US there. And have outdoor night presentations. Horsebackriding and other activities. As well as historical Fort Davis.

You gotta check that out if you are going to be that close. :)

Midland!!!

~grandma again~ --- 13 years ago -

and be sure to go to the Monahans Sandhills for the day. take lots of bottled water and sunscreen though.

Cameron, sorry if i scared you. actually home is what you make it. if you have to go that way, enjoy what that area has to offer for as long as you have to stay there. it is much cheaper to live there so you can save some money if you try. you can always drive or fly out to Dallas for a weekend, too.

when i lived in Odessa, i detested Houston because people here were not as friendly and in such a hurry. of course, i ended up living here. lol

oh...and i voted Midland. :)

ET --- 13 years ago -

The locals say Midland is where you live when you own the company and Odessa is where you live when you work at the company. I fly out there frequently and Midland appears to be the better of a poor choice. I also hear that with the oil fields in full swing, it is no longer as cheap to live there as people think.

NewMommy --- 13 years ago -

Midland for sure! I'm from that area. I hope you have a place to live already....apartments and housing is almost impossible to find right now. People are having to live in other towns and drive in. And yes, ET is right, it is not cheap to live there anymore. Price per square foot is WAY more then KW.

NewMommy --- 13 years ago -

And it has grown a lot in the last 5 years or so. They have things to do...minor baseball team (Rockhounds), bowling alley, movies, mall, etc. And DFW is only a 4 hour drive if you need somewhere to go for a weekend. :)

Meme2my5 --- 13 years ago -

Yes, midland for sure.

Aah Grasshoppa --- 13 years ago -

Hope you have better choices on your next move.

CamerontheThird --- 13 years ago -

Well Albuquerque is another option...not sure if that woould be any better though.

~grandma again~ --- 13 years ago -

i know several people who started out with Southwest in Odessa/Midland. they now are in San Antonio or Houston or other places.

~grandma again~ --- 13 years ago -

i would pick albuquerque. at least you would be closer to mountains, cool places like Santa Fe, skiing, etc. when i grow up, i think i want to retire in Santa Fe!

justcat --- 13 years ago -

Oh yea.Albuquerque would be cool...

Meme2my5 --- 13 years ago -

New Mexico is beautiful.

*Annie* --- 13 years ago -

ABQ is definitely the best choice of the three options! I love to visit there!

If you happen to go check out the area, have your first meal at The Range.

CamerontheThird --- 13 years ago -

I've always wanted to live in Tucson. Too bad that isn't an option... I love the American Southwest..

Aah Grasshoppa --- 13 years ago -

Oh yeah, go ABQ! Annie is right. Similar to Tucson. Good choice.

~grandma again~ --- 13 years ago -

Phoenix is awesome! i loved living there!!

i sent you a private message and suggested you just pick the one you can transfer out of more easily if you do not like the new life. for sure NM for a longer term thing though.:)

*Annie* --- 13 years ago -

Annie is right.

I always love those words. LOL
