Having difficulty finding options for Vegan protein sources that are not high in carbs. Help!!! On a side note, I'm allergic to nuts. It makes it extremely difficult. If anyone knows of a dietician I could consult with please share their info. Thanks!

Are you going vegan?

LoveMyDoggies --- 12 years ago -

Yes ma'am. Been about a week now. It's not easy. I've done lots of research and I track everything I eat so I can avoid gaining weight or missing something that I really need in my diet.

Perfection --- 12 years ago -

cool. I am asking some nuts I know for ya

SagaciousSighFiGurl (Mod) --- 12 years ago -

Beans?

LoveMyDoggies --- 12 years ago -

Yeah, I do eat beans but I'm wondering if there are low carb options for beans. Are there beans that are lower carb than others?

NitANee --- 12 years ago -

Quinoa is a full protein. You won't need to combine it with anything.

Beans are good, but to get a full protein, you would need to combine it with something like rice.

LoveMyDoggies --- 12 years ago -

Thanks NitaNee. I haven't tried that yet. Does HEB carry it? Hmm

LoveMyDoggies --- 12 years ago -

I think I recall learning about that in Weight Watchers. Not learning about it, but hearing about it. I forgot about it.

NitANee --- 12 years ago -

You should be able to get it at HEB in the grains section, sometimes in bulk. Boil it in water, like you would grits.

I'm sure there are plenty of recipes online for variety.

Good luck

Perfection I'm trying to stick to the 40-30-30 plan. (Carbs, Protein, Fat)

Right now it's more like 60-20-20 LOL

I found a recipe I like on a food blog.

www.thistexancooks.com

worth a look.

Quinoa is also sold at Costco. It is not cheap but in bulk at Costco slightly cheaper.

To be honest if you're going Veg you will probably have no problem losing weight. Other than Candy Crowley, I've never seen a fat vegetarian.

I love quinoa! So many things you can do with it. It has all the amino acids to make it a complete source of protein.

Nutritional yeast is also something you'll want to get. It's got some protein (3g per serving) but really it's a great source of B vitamins for vegans.

LoveMyDoggies --- 12 years ago -

I wish there was some vegan support group in the area. I really want to pick the pro's brains. :)

Seitan is one they are talking about

MLO brand soy protein powder is another option. They think it is based in Oklahoma and also make a pea protein as well.

mom2dx --- 12 years ago -

Seitan is good. Made from wheat gluten. You'd think it would be high in carbs but it's surprisingly not!

Hippiedippiechik --- 12 years ago -

Quinoa is sold at every grocery store(even WalMart).

I love the pasta...DH loves it just as is.

Megg --- 12 years ago -

Tofu, beans, cashew, kale, quinoa, brown rice, etc.

jtcitrus --- 12 years ago -

quinoa and chia aren't bad / high fiber so they're slow-carb

all legumes (beans/peas/soy)

serve it with a side of B12 supplements.

jtcitrus --- 12 years ago -

oh yeah... nuts.

dark leafy greens greens are "high" in protein but you have to eat a mountain of them.

AngieKaye --- 12 years ago -

Get protein drinks like ensure or muscle milk they don't have real milk in it. Soy milk is high in protein. Spinach is you best protein in green veggies Or just get a protein supplement pills. Go to gnc or a health food store they have many protein powders and pills. My son was vegan for a while lost alot of weight.

AngieKaye --- 12 years ago -

Another Amy meals have added protein

I've gone to Natural Kitchen and gotten advice before. It is on WLHP near Skeeters.

Perfection --- 12 years ago -

Soy - Tofu, soybeans, textured vegetable protein (TVP), tempeh, soy supplements.
Seeds - sunflower, flaxseed, hemp, chia, pumpkin, etc...
Seitan
Nuts/nut butter
Lentils, beans, peas... getting higher carb now.

Perfection --- 12 years ago -

oh dang, I just saw the nut allergy. YIKES

One recommendation was to look at meetup.com and see what pops up for local vegan groups

Eggs and mushrooms are high in protein. Mushrooms are also a good source of vitamin B12 and have antiviral and anti-fungal effects as well. What are your goals that may require high protein diet?

jtcitrus --- 12 years ago -

mushrooms are A source of b12, which makes them "good" compared to nearly all other non-meat foods. But bank on taking supplements.

th b12 is in the bacteria on the surface of the mushroom/root vegetable and is lost if washed thoroughly. Fortified yeast products will have some as well

its basically impossible to meet the RDA for b12 consistently as a vegan without supplements.
