I'm having my tonsils removed next week. Heard it's a hard recovery. Any tips?

A bell for beside your bed to summon the ice cream appearance

Take your pain meds as prescribed. Stsy on top of the pain management instead of trying to squash the ache.

Liquid Lortab. Don't forget that acidic stuff like spaghetti sauce will burn.

DH had a procedure which included tonsils but he said he loved pudding the most. Something about it was just the right thickness like it coated his throat. Frozen things were sometimes too cold.

His procedure was far more invasive than just tonsils and it took him nine days to get up and around. I would think tonsils alone would be half that.

They are removing the tonsils and uvula and a turbinate reduction in the nose. Doc said 7-10 days to recover. Ugh....

Who is your doctor?

My brother had it done.... He was out for a good two weeks. I second the acid and cold comment... He had it rougher than my nephew who was 7, my brother was 30 something... Best of luck.

I had mine removed when I was 25. I was very fit back then, but I still lost 10 pounds in 5 days if that tells you anything. Extreme hot and extreme cold both hurt. I did not like ice cream or anything containing milk, because it made my mucus thick and made me feel like I was suffocating. I remember sleeping with a LOT of pillows, almost in an upright position, and easy chair would have been a great way to get a good night's sleep. Watch too much sugar and too much salt, because they will both hurt. Oh, and if they give you Tylenol 3 with codeine, make sure you have some fiber on hand. That's all I'm saying . . .

Good luck!

That is a UPPP. They also will take part of the palate and maybe tighten your airway. That is the same thing DH had done. Nine days until he was up and around. Longer to fully recover. Bes. choice he ever made we have never regretted it once.

i had mine out when i was 30. give your self waaaaaay more time to recover than the doctor says. even the lortab hurt me going down. i lost 30 pounds and wasnt back to eating normally for about 3 months. my uvula swelled so much it would gag and choke me, maybe because yours is being removed it won't be so bad. i begged my husband to take me back to the hospital to have my head removed. this is NOT minor surgery.

I'm doing ok. Surgery was Wednesday and today it's really starting to hurt all over, mouth, tongue, etc. But it's manageable. I'm staying hydrated and getting a little food down. Thanks for checking in.

Get ready for HELL WEEK. I had mine taken out when I was 21 years old and had to stay in the hospital for one week. A three year old boy had his taken out at the same time and went home the next day. Follow your doctors advice and take your pain meds. Popcicles, ice cream, icy drinks. Good luck. You'll be FINE ! :)
