On average, how much should a 3 ton a/c unit cost (with labor and Freon)? My mom lives in west Tx in a double wide mobile home. I'm just guessing she has a 3 ton unit & it's my understanding it's only the unit that needs to be replaced (no ducts, etc).

I feel like the price she was quoted in her small town is crazy.....$6K. She takes everyone's word on everything and says 2 a/c ppl in town told her that sounded right. And if she wanted just a new compressor it would be about $2K PLUS labor. Is she getting ripped off? I told her to please ask someone else...

Our 5 ton heat pump is way less than that! For that price I would just get several window units and be done with it. 

search 13 seer kit on the internet they have kits to rebuild and fix her unit. My husband is in the ac business but in the manufacturing side

She is getting ripped off. My mom has a 2,100 sq ft house and I think it was about $3,500 a couple of years ago. Maybe she she should call someone in the next town. 

$6k for an entire change out of the system with a high seer unit isn't too bad, but if it's just the condenser unit (outside unit) then it's too high. My husband & I own a residential A/C Company here in Kingwood/Houston. He'd be happy to answer any questions. He always suggests getting multiple quotes. Pm me with questions if you'd like.

I'm not an AC tech, but why would someone install a high seer unit in a trailer? I don't think they're known for their insulation qualities. 

I think 13 seer is the minimum you can do, legally.

But it's all about supply and demand. Maybe her small town has lots of demand and low supply. 

You can darn near do a complete system for that price. If it's just the outdoor unit that needs replaced it shouldn't be more than 2800 bucks, probably less, depending on what else she needs and whether or not it needs to be charged with r-22.

Thank you all! I texted her the replies and told her to PLEASE get another quote and make sure they specify WHAT is being replaced.

It's a very small town, she is single, you HAVE to have an A/C....it's already over 100* everyday and gets to 120* in the summer. Maybe my brother should call and get the quote instead to see if they will give a male they don't know a different price. 

Just just had a 3 ton unit with all duct work, labor, etc. put in for about $5900. This was for a 1900 sq.ft. house.
