Who has driven from Kingwood to Maine and what sights to see? . . . want to stay off of interstates whenever possible. This is a leisure ride !

Sounds like fun! I always wanted to go in the fall when leaves were turning and it was cooling off.

Smokey Mountains, Williamsburg, Va... Kind of depends on the route you will be taking. Bar Harbour when you get to Maine. Camdon, MA is nice. Boston, North Conway, NH...

That is a long drive. How many days are you planning on spending driving there each way? I love Maine but drove there from Boston which was an easy drive.

Personally, I like to take the route through Tennessee. Little Rock- Clinton Museum, Memphis- BBQ, Elvis attractions, Jackson, TN- Casey Jones Buffet, Nashville- If you like Country Music maybe stay the night for the nightlife. Route takes you through the mountains most of the way and views are much nicer than swampy Southeast coast. Virginia/Pennsylvania- civil war attractions, Williamsburg, VA is good experience, but very hot in the summer (no AC in colonial times, I would skip for a fall trip). Washington DC is a must if you haven't ever been. I guess NY city would be also, but I prefer DC. Boston has whale watching and so would Maine i guess. Have a great trip!

My hubby has done it a couple of times, but didn't stop along the way, so I can't help there. It's a monstrous drive, so he just wanted to get from here to there as fast as possible.

Where in Maine are you going? I'm a native Maine-iac, so would be happy to help with Maine tips if I am familiar with where you will be visiting.

Definitely try to visit Acadia National Park. This is the perfect time of year for it!

We plan on going to the Brunswick / Portland area. Our idea is to take the most leisurely trip along the way thru mountains and areas off of the beaten path in October (when fall is just getting started). Want to avoid the big cities, had enough of those !

We appreciate the comments folks !

I went in my motorhome, I95 mostly. Highways, especially in NJ/NY area were rough enough to tear up the suspension.

We stayed mostly ay KOA campgrounds. Small, family ownded, helpful, and in semirural areas.

Myrtle Beach was nice, Lake off proving grounds in Baltiomre nice. We went to Portland, heard Bar Harbor was place to go. Just too much futher up the road.
