A home invasion turned deadly for a trio of suspects in the Humble area over the weekend.
A hapless crew of burglars hoping to score big during a Humble-area home invasion was greeted with gunfire instead, sending them fleeing and eventually costing one his life.

The men fled the scene, but when police finally stopped the suspects in a car in northeast Houston 6 miles from the burglary, one of the would-be home invaders had died in the back of the vehicle.

Harris County Precinct 4 deputies arrived just before midnight at a home on the 18900 block of Kemble in Atascocita, after receiving reports of a home invasion burglary with shots fired, according to Thomas Gilliland, a Harris County Sheriff's Office spokesman.

The couple who owns the house heard noises and hid in a closet, Gilliland said. When the would-be burglars came into their bedroom, one of the homeowners, a 40-year-old man, fired once through the closet door, sending the intruders fleeing into the night.

The deputies arrived to find the suspects gone and a trail of blood, but weren't able to find the wounded burglar at the scene or in nearby hospitals.

About 90 minutes later, the Harris County Sheriff's Office, which had taken over the investigation, got a call from the Houston Police Department, Gilliland said. Houston police officers had tried to pull over a gray four-door Acura sedan, chasing it and finally stopping it on Rankin near Spears.

Two people fled on foot and were eventually caught, Gilliland said. Officers found another man dead in the backseat of the car. The vehicle's driver told police that he had been carjacked on Droitwich, just one street over from the scene of the attempted home invasion.

The driver told police the carjackers wanted him to drive them to a hospital because their companion had been shot.

"We're investigating whether his story checks out," Gilliland said, noting that when police finally apprehended the suspects, it was nearly two hours after the shooting, which had taken place not far from several hospitals.

Gilliland said charges were pending on the two suspects who fled police on foot. In the meantime, investigators with the Harris County Sheriff's Office searched the Humble home and questioned the homeowners to try to determine a motive for the crime.

"It wasn't a random deal," he said.

not a random deal? sounds like there may not have been any good guys in this crime-

This is a confusing one here...

Pixtor --- 9 years ago -

What's confusing about it?

The bad guy broke into the homeowner's house to rob him and the homeowner shoots the bad guy.

Homeowner alive ~ bad guy dead ~ bad guy's cohorts in jail.

Sounds like a happy ending to me.

Wait a minute........ You mean to tell me a GUN was used successfully to defend someone's life?

How is that possible? According to those gun grabbing lefties. Guns NEVER save lives.

One less trial the taxpayers have to fund, one less repeat offender on the streets.

Judge Smails --- 9 years ago -

We're told that victims always shoot everyone except the perps. What happened?

SoupIsGoodFood --- 9 years ago -

Befuddlement from the gun grabbers.

Scenes like this go against their narrative.

mutton --- 9 years ago -

Confused cos I thought the news had homeowner going in to station due to find in car trunk...

Pixtor --- 9 years ago -

^^^ huh? ^^^

Mayberry --- 9 years ago -

May be why they said - wasn't a random deal...more to the story.,

mutton --- 9 years ago -

Was early this am on news TV, not sure what was going on, but seemed strange. They were not handcuffed so not as a suspect I assume.
