Anyone have their Federal Pacific Panel replaced and can recommend a local electrician?

Any idea of the cost?

Thanks

I had a friend do it who normally only does commercial work so he did it as a favor, but it was about $1500. Prepare for the cost to be north of that.

I had Preferred Electric do one a couple of years ago. It was $800.00 and included an upgrade in circuits. They were the most reasonable company I found.

A Kingwood family owned business. A lot of people I know use them. They did not try and sell me a bunch of stuff I didn't need. I got estimates that ranged all the way up to $5,000.

Is it the Fed Pacific box that is old and not up to code? Mine is OK last I checked, I just want to upgrade to a bigger box. Oops! I guess I'd better pay my water bill first.

Fed Pacific Boxes are no longer in code anywhere. They went out of business years ago they do not even sell parts for them. Some places still have "leftovers" but they will cost you a small fortune to purchase and replace.

I used Preferred Electric last month and was very pleased with their service and price. Will definitely use them again.

Federal pacific boxes are fire hazards. Get rid of them.

I had an old GE, but replaced it all last year with an Eaton BR 200A

Make sure your electrian pulls a permit and has the inspection done.

Agreed, if they don't want to/will not pull a permit your probably don't want them working on your electrical.

Having issues with GFIs blowing. I really need to upgrade. All my circuits are in use now with the generator wired in.

Interior GFI outlets, or AFCI breakers in the panel are tripping?

Eliza2 --- 8 years ago -

We use Wired electrical services for our stuff. If you can afford it have a whole house surge protector installed. Best thing we ever did.

Last quote I got for that was $250.00. Considering the cost of a refrigerator, TV, computer etc that is not too bad.

Whatever you do, don't hire Ray Mendoza. Supposedly a licensed electrician. We've recently had a horrible, expensive experience with Ray Mendoza. Hired him to install a 30amp outlet for our motorhome. He hooked our RV up to a 220 outlet which resulted in blowing out the circuit board and a bedroom TV. Repairs cost us almost $1,000. We have notified him 4 times of the costs and that we would like to settle this out. He won't respond. Apparently very careless and less than honest regarding taking care of his mistake.

I'm a week or so away from replacing mine. We'll let you know. Getting another offer before proceeding. The initial quote I just got today was very high (at least IMO)

Interior GFI. We have 2 outlets that do not work again after being repaired. We have one outlet that trips no matter what. It is like they are over loaded. We have had to replace nearly all the outlet boxes due to poor design used back when. Pretty much all my plugs were a fire hazard as they pulled out o the wall so easily. We have electric Gremlins!

After this latest short power outage, our answering machine that hasn't worked in a month (shrug) suddenly works again.

fuzz81 --- 8 years ago -

Outlets can be chained off of a master GFI. Your non working outlets might be a tripped master GFI.

You probably have loose connections, which are also a fire hazard. Wires need to be cleaned and re-torqued most likely.

TinktheSprite --- 8 years ago -

Which is the Master GFI? We have 5 in the house, 1 in the garage. The one in the garage trips the most.

Where are the loose connections? IN the outlets? I should check all of them?

After these storms one new livingroom outlet isn't working. Gremlins, I tell ya!!

Job complete...took a while to get on his calendar but was complete in one long day. Permit pulled, Centerpoint pulls meter and then Centerpoint comes out and reinstalls meter after new panel is in place. Came in slightly below estimate of $2,000 (permit cost is $180 of this amount).

Used T&K Electric out of Cleveland. We would use again be flexible and not in a rush and you will get an excellent job done.

WOW, that is a lot. I paid $800.00 including permits just recently...

Wow $800...would let them touch my house if they quoted me that price.

Why not...they were fully insured and a reputable, highly recommended company. I know a lot of people who have used the company and they do great work.
