I'm not that old at 60 years, been using computers forever, but I can't remember the password for my laptop. I've had it about a year and a half, but haven't used it in a long time. Anybody got any ideas? Help! 

There's a prompt in there to recover your password and/or change it. It should be on the main screen where you put in your password. It may say "forgot password" or something similar. It may be in your settings too. 

Another drastic way is to reset your computer. You can do that before you sign in to it. However you lose everything. I hope you backed it up. 

if she doesn't know how to prompt a new password, that doesn't sound like a very smart option-

This only requires slightly above average computer literacy to do, as long as you aren't afraid of a text-driven interface instead of a pretty little gui. You'll be right at home if you are even a tiny bit familiar with Linux conventions:
