We are amidst replacing our deck walk way on one side of the house. It has give us a long life despite the saw-attack by the neighbor's fence builders. We could have simply replaced 3-4-27 rotten boards, but we decided to replace it all, taking the opportunity to cut it in an out again with the new-ish Good Neighbor fence line.

We got 8 boards cut and screwed down today. Wood is more expensive than it used to be. And we are not as able as we used to be. We got tired fast! These 8 boards are the ones with the most intricate cuts and it took time. Hopefully it things will move much faster from here on out. Just so grateful for this amazing weather to work in!

It will get faster don't worry. Don't overdo it and post plenty of pics for us to see of the finished product so we can all be happy with you.

Saw-attack?!

TinktheSprite --- 8 years ago -

Yeah, We split the cost of the fence on that side. Good Neighbor Fencing alternates good side/bad side, sort of zigzagging the fence line. We had our deck in and it zigzagged with the old fence keeping the boards close to the fence line. But the new fence builder zigged instead of zagged and cut very badly our deck edges to get it out of the way. The deck edges were uneven, jagged and not straight at all. I understood why he had to do it. But he did a lousy job and we have hated it for a long time. The neighbor felt bad and brought us a cake. IDK how to post my own photos. My 'Bucket account is full.

Sounds like you've got a good neighbor, Tink.

I have to replace approximately 6 to 8 boards on my deck, but I'm going to buy 6' boards (they're easier to work with) and splice them in.

Good luck ...

TinktheSprite --- 8 years ago -

Yeah, they moved though :(

Was going to replace just the few/20 boards but the deck is old and really needed total replacing. And that zigzag issue bugged us.

It's nice to get this hard work done before it gets too hot.

Next on the table are building barrels.

Use trex...

Use trex...?

I am building a new deck right now in the woodlands using Trex. EXPENSIVE!! but nice, using the hidden fastner system. If anyone needs a quote, we can do it, but be prepared for a pricy quote, the materials are much more than the labor. The lady got a quote from another company for $7,000.00 and I quoted $6,400.00. I can beat any quote and help you save money, but still the bulk of the pricing will be the materials. I will post pics later once we are finished.

Tink... I am needing to replace fence. Would you recommend your fence company? Were the the best priced? etc..

TinktheSprite --- 8 years ago -

We used Livable Forest Fence for the other sides o the fence. Maybe not the best price but the best quality, i.e. metal gate framing, etc. We wanted a fence to last as we are not moving. IDK who my neighbor used but I would NOT recommend them. Not only did they ruin our deck. they killed all 3 of the neighbor's fence line trees during the build and were a mess with concrete everywhere but in the post holes it seems because the fence wobbles.

Then to compare, I have heard good things about New Caney Fence.

When it comes to fences, what I have learned from others' mistakes is the lower the bid usually the lower the quality of fencing materials in general. So when you get your bid ask about what kind and size of wood they will use.

OK. This is going to take awhile. We did the next 5 ft. today. DH has physical issues and can't last more than 2-3 hours working on the deck without hurting. He measures, I cut and he screws down the boards. Pretty soon I think he will just come out and supervise me. This may very well be the last deck he ever builds.
