Who else besides me is seriously considering in investing in a backup, natural gas generator?

We haven't suffered too bad but it's just about convinced me.

Saturn --- 4 years ago -

I have a portable generator that will power everything but the 220v items.

Last spring I considered a whole house generator, but I just didn't want to part with $8k to $9k.

Aside from a 30 minute outrage this morning, my power has been on throughout this mess.

Knocking on wood ...

It's really tempting! A few hours w/o power is no big deal. Days and days of it is another story. It's grand when you really need it. Someone told me the newest ones are all online controlled!

A generator is like insurance, you don't need it until you do.

It more expensive than that, Saturn. That is just for the unit. The cost for the plumber and installation is about $3k. There has to be like 3 ft clearing on all sides of it for ventilation. The natural gas to run it is $$. It runs and tests itself every week for about 20 mins. cha-ching! It needs oil once a year and a tune up like every engine. I think the tune up runs $200/yr? don't quote me. This is definitely something to research and look into before diving in.

Another option like Saturn has, you can have a portable generator wired into your circuit breaker box for a whole lot less. A couple flip of the switches and depending on the size of your genny, you can have power to your home. It's not instant and you have to plan for it, but it's no where near $15k to install it, either!

Lowes had them for 8K installed. $32 monthly monitoring fee and a ten year warranty that includes the yearly maintenance fee. Runs once a week for 7 minutes. No change in our gas bill. Loved having it today when power was out for 4 hours. Pool kept running and watched a great movie. Generac Supercenter Tomball.

After two weeks out after Ike, I can see why someone would buy one. Our neighbor shared his generator (portable), and we still got laundry done. But, does it help when your house is underwater? We were covered in debris and trees after Ike..not flooded.

nw0rbrolyat --- 4 years ago -

Tryingto my thoughts while reading this entire thread. Does no good if you flood. A decent sized portable with a supply of gas wired into the panel does just fine. Except for no a/c but window units are cheap.

I just dont see the point in them for the cost. We are humans and can handle some "roughing" it due to mother nature, albeit the rarity that it comes. Cant have every luxury 24/7 365

I have one and it was the best investment I have ever made. Call Aaron Parker and Parco Electric, it's his speciality.

I have a huge Generac for the whole house that I have serviced religiously twice a year. Guess what? It isn't working. Power is back but has been off a lot. What a hassle!

I have a Generac too. And in the beginning (just after Ike) I had huge issues. However, Cruz Air and Electric had the motor replaced and it has been a champ now for 9 years. First time it has really been used, but I am so happy to have it.
