I know someone that gets very stressed before giving a speech or starting a new event. I'm trying to help them deal with this. Do any of you know of any Prayers or Psalms that would help to calm anxiety?

Serenity prayer...

Work in Progress --- 12 years ago -

New International Version (©1984)

"When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought joy to my soul."

Psalm 94:19

OBXgirl --- 12 years ago -

Hebrews 13:5-6
For He Himself has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you." So we may boldly say: "The LORD is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?"

Psalm 120
I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber . Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep . The LORD is thy keeper : the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.

Paws,

That is an awesome one.

This is the passage I remember when I get anxious about things.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

And here are some other verses, all from the NLT.

Micah 7:7

My God will certainly hear me.

------------

Psalm 5:3

In the morning, O Lord, you will hear my voice. In the morning, I will order my prayer to you and eagerly watch.

---------------

Psalm 27:14

Wait for the Lord, be strong and of good courage and he will strengthen thine heart. Yes, wait, I say on the Lord.

-------------

Psalm 62:1-2

I wait quietly before God for my victory comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress where I will never be shaken.

--------------

Psalm 50:14-15

Make thankfulness your sacrifice to God and keep the vows you made to the Most High.
Then call on me when you a are in trouble and I will rescue you, and you will give me glory.

----------------

Psalms 56:12-13

I will fulfill my vows to you O God and will offer a sacrifice of thanks for your help.
For you have rescued me from death, you have kept my feet from slipping.
So now I can walk in your presence O God, in your life giving light.

---------------

Psalm 56:3-4

But when I am afraid, I wll put my trust in you.
I praise God for what he has promised. I trust in God, so why should I be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me.

---------------

Isaiah 12:2

See, God has come to save me. I will trust in him and not be afraid.
The Lord God is my strength and my song. He has given me victory.

--------------

Psalm 91:1-4

Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
This I declare about the Lord. HE alone is my refuge, my place of safety.
He is my God and I trust in Him.

-------------

Psalm 91:14-15

The Lord says, I will rescue those who love me.
I will protect those who trust in my name.
When they call on me, I will answer. I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honor them.
I will reward them with a long life and give them my salvation.

-----------

Luke 1:45

You are blessed because you believed that the Lord would do what he said.

-----------

John 14:13

You can ask for anything in my name and I will do it so that the son can bring glory to the Father. Yes, ask for anything in my name and I will do it.

--------------

John 15:7

But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want and it will be granted.

---------------

2 Corinthians 1:20

Of all of God's promises have been fulfilled yes, and through Christ, Amen.

---------------

When you pray to God, follow the outline Jesus gave in the Lord's prayer (David follows this in the Psalms he wrote as well:)

1. Offer praise to God for his glorious and wonderful power.
2. Thank him for what he has done and what he has given you.
3. Present your requests.

Maybe your friend can thank God for the opportunity he has been given in the speeches/presentation. Ask that he can be a witness and example to the glory of God.

I struggled with lots of anxiety and claimed many of these scriptures daily which helped but didn't fix the problem. It took me six month of consistent talk therapy with a psychologist and some meds as well as daily exercise for that short time to get over the hump. I had to get to the root of my anxiety.

I totally believe in prayer but sometimes there are other things going on too that need to be addressed.

for me, I agree with DP, it's the Serenity Prayer, hands down..it fits every situation, and is a prayer to live by-

AngieKaye --- 12 years ago -

Me I just open my bible and start reading. In my eyes that is the way the Lord is telling me what I need to hear at that time in my life.

Bless the meat, damn the skin, back your ears and cram it in.

AngieKaye --- 12 years ago -

Not to be wrong but this is my serenity prayer:)

Lord, Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change.
The courage to change the things I can.
The wisdom to hide the bodies of those people I had to kill because they pissed me off!

Loki's suggestion works well.

But why call it prayer at all?... why not cal it what it is? "personal introspection", or "focused concentration", or "guided relaxation".

If believing some omnipotent being is listeng, well, more power to you... I just fail to see where self-deception is helpful.
