Wish someone could have brought him roast beef, ham or turkey. If he were my Dad, I would have fixed him up a nice plate and brought it to him, and warmed it up at the nurses station. Saying a prayer for him that he can be back home soon.

----

Former President George H.W. Bush noshed on Chinese food with his wife and a few family members as he spent Christmas in a Houston hospital, where setbacks following a persistent cough have kept him from going home.

Bush, 88, remains in stable condition at The Methodist Hospital in Houston, spokesman Jim McGrath said Tuesday, adding that it is unclear when the 41st president might be released.

Doctors had expected Bush to be home in time for the holiday. But he felt weak recently and developed a fever.

"They're taking it one day at a time right now," McGrath said. "The doctors are cautiously optimistic that they have his current issues in hand. But they need to see more improvement before they start thinking about discharge."

On the holiday, Bush was visited by his wife, Barbara, his son, Neil, Neil's wife, Maria, and his grandson, Pierce. They brought Chinese food from Gigi's Asian Bistro in the Galleria area. Two of Bush's other sons, former President George W. Bush and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, weren't at his bedside on Christmas, but both have visited him during his hospital stay and are planning to come again soon, McGrath said.

"Today was just really the Houston contingent," he said.

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 12 years ago -

I'll bet he wanted Chinese!!! Barbara would've brought him anything he wanted!!

RedMulch --- 12 years ago -

Maybe he likes Chinese and they know that.......

GeorgiaPeach --- 12 years ago -

I think you're right. Maybe he is sick of hospital mystery meat and the icky dehydrated mashed potatoes. Just hope the sweet old guy can come home soon.

SagaciousSighFiGurl (Mod) --- 12 years ago -

Poor guy. He's just at that age where pneumonia and/or bronchitis/viral upper respiratory stuff can be deadly if not taken care of quickly. Hope he gets to feeling better and can go home. Old folks hate NOT being in their home.

Gigix4 --- 12 years ago -

Old folks hate NOT being in their home.

Yes! We do.

Uh oh, you wouldn't make a good traveler! The only thing I'd miss is my special mattress for my lousy back! Other than that, nada!! And if I can travel to interesting destinations, I can even do without that. LOL!

TexasOma --- 12 years ago -

I can assure you that he is NOT eating hospital food at Methodist. They have a separate kitchen & chef for the celebrities, meals are not the common folk meals that everyone else gets.

They even have a separate floor and designated nursing staff for the celebrities and royalty that comes to that hospital.

Gigix4 --- 12 years ago -

if I can travel to interesting destinations

I've been to a lot of amazing places all over the world and I would not trade those experiences for anything ... but I was a lot younger when all that traveling took place.
The last 6-10 years prior to my retiring, I/we traveled a lot! Gone a week, home a week or 2, then gone again, then back home for a week or 2 then off again.
I never, ever care to get on another airplane, bus or train. I don't even like to drive the 50 miles to get to my doctor's office.
NO PLACE LIKE HOME!

Cookin' Queen --- 12 years ago -

I am sure he is on the Fondren 12th floor. My dad stayed there. It was incredible. My mother told him not to get well. We had high tea served to us every afternoon on pretty china. There was a private chef just for that floor. I got a tour of the kitchen and it was fantastic. The room was beautiful. Gold fixtures and granite in the bath. We had a bar area. Some rooms had separate living areas. When you got off the elevator the smell of the flowers knocked you over. We had a living area to the side of his bed with a velvet sofa that had to be 9 feet long. A very special place.

TexasOma --- 12 years ago -

Fondren 12th floor.

When I started working at Methodist (moons ago) we go a mini tour of that floor. That was my first hospital after I graduated from nursing school.

RedMulch --- 12 years ago -

In the summer after high school, I worked at a NC hospital that reserved their top floor for celebs. I was working on that floor when Billy Graham's wife was admitted. (i was not a nurse, just a ward clerk) and i have to say that he is the most unfriendly evangelist I have ever ran across.

Ha, not sad at all. Chinese food is a popular Christmas meal for the folks that don't celebrate Christmas all across the northeast. Chinese restaurants were typically the only places open to get a holiday meal. While Bush is probably not Jewish, he is a Yankee from New England.

freebyrdII --- 12 years ago -

He isn't from TX?

ET --- 12 years ago -

Way north Texas.

freebyrdII --- 12 years ago -

My bad ..... He was born in Massachusetts and moved to west Tx at the age of 24.

ET --- 12 years ago -

Yup, similar deal with GWB. They both downplay all of that, though GHB spends a lot of time in Maine.

ShookUpRamen --- 12 years ago -

While Bush is probably not Jewish.....'ya think?

ET --- 12 years ago -

Like you, just using some simple sarcasm....though you never know what could be lurking in their past.

hemiha --- 12 years ago -

Maybe Chinese food is a Christmas tradition for their family.

kidsfan3 --- 12 years ago -

His fever is rising. I sure hope he gets better soon.

President Bush

freebyrdII --- 12 years ago -

Please Lord, Barbara Bush has always been the "rock" of the family but I fear she will be needing your support through these difficult times. Please comfort her and grant the elder President Bush any and all healing and relief from fear and discomfort that you can. Your will be done. Amen

Perfection --- 12 years ago -

I heard on the radio all news channel he is in ICU now

Dorothy Parker --- 12 years ago -

While it's very sad for the family, he's no spring chicken! He's lived a very long, full life with many advantages and adventures....he also has a large family who loves him...he's rich in many ways!

I hope his health improves....my heart goes out to his wife and family.

So true. He is 88 now. That's really getting up there. He has had a great life and the Bush's seem like a close and good family.

I hope he can overcome this.

Gigix4 --- 12 years ago -

Hopefully, they are just being cautious, considering his age.
Yes, they do seem to be a very close and good family.

Typical VOnR ---- do you always have to be so rude?

John Lynch nor jdb were on this thread, nor was anyone discussing the hayride. WOW --- but typical.

Merry Christmas sweety - hope whatever has your constitution all fouled up gets fixed soon.

As for the Chinese dinner --- I heard on the news this morning that the Bush family has a tradition of eating Chinese on Christmas. ,,,,explains that.

Gigix4 --- 12 years ago -

I really don't think he is quite on "death's bed" yet.
It is my understanding that his other boys have been into visit him several times.
I'm sure if he was on "death's bed", his family would be at his side.

kidsfan3 --- 12 years ago -

KHOU just updated their story with the following statement from a family spokesman.

The following statement was released by the Bush family spokesman Jim McGrath Wednesday evening:

"Following a series of setbacks including a persistent fever, President Bush was admitted to the intensive care unit at Methodist Hospital on Sunday where he remains in guarded condition. Doctors at Methodist continue to be cautiously optimistic about the current course of treatment. The President is alert and conversing with medical staff, and is surrounded by family."

GeorgiaPeach --- 12 years ago -

I know my own father spent Thanksgiving in the hospital. We all were happy to spend time with him and brought him leftovers of turkey and my SIL's good oyster stuffing.

Please don 't take this thread wrong. I was just thinking about family and how I would be there for my Dad.

Not judging. Please don't either. The thread was to be supportive of Mr Bush Sr.

TexasOma --- 12 years ago -

That's what Channel 13 said.

Both men have their own families, one of JW's daughters just announced she's pregnant, so I'm sure he and Laura went to see her for Christmas. Grown people celebrate with their own families, especially if they know their ailing parent is in the capable hands of a place like Methodist. I'm sure neither son abandoned their father and mother, just didn't come for Christmas.

Plus - think of the turmoil media event their presence would cause. I'm think the media has Methodist staked out to capture whatever shot they can capture.

===============================
the only thing that is typical is YOUR post. guess that's what happens with aging/

are you not familiar with the segue concept? 'speaking of dads' duh!

the only rude thing besides yourself are the two bush sons i wrote about. i stand by my statement. if my dad were dying you can bet your arse i would have gotten there on Xmas come hell or high water. selfish, ungrateful children he has! gw for starters and jeb not far behind.

'both been into visit him several times'???
i should hope so! he is there dying dad!
but where were they on the holy day?
yeah just what i thought. invisible on dad's last Xmas!

Aren't people jumping the gun? The news never said Mr. Bush was dying.

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 12 years ago -

yes, people are jumping the gun- if he's dying, that info certainly hasn't been released-

AngieKaye --- 12 years ago -

He's not dieing.. Well least not yet. We are ALL dieing to some degree everyday. But he's out of ICU and doing alot better, just with his age it takes alot longer to heal.
