Any recommendations for a tax attorney or CPA? The IRS did a mail audit and is stating I owe $4500. Turbo Tax took a mortgage interest deduction on a house we rented for half the year.

TIA!

Do you feel you don't owe it?

First just call them.

I've been through two of those in the last 3 years and been able to resolve both over the phone with just a few faxes being sent.

We use Rebecca Johanson, pm if you want her number. She's very detail oriented...

Is there an available CPA worth hiring in Kingwood? The lady I spoke with today said the good ones are all booked and not taking new clients.

What exactly are you fighting? You can't deduct mortgage interest on a home you are renting. You need to have it as a primary residence u own. What are you going to fight? You either took a fraudulent expense or your didn't.

How much did you claim? A 4500 bill would mean you claimed more than that? Did you claim like 20,000 dollars? I am confused.

Jacques Merde --- 12 years ago -

I'm confused too which is why I need a CPA. The IRS is stating the mortgage interest was claimed in two places when all I can determine is one place.

Calling the IRS takes two hours, mostly on hold, and the person that answers never knows anything.

I want a CPA to figure this out. Any got a recommendation?

Sounds like you're toast. Save yourself some money and work out a payment plan for what you owe, and quit taking deductions that are ineligible. Or at the very least, have your returns prepared by a competent CPA. You'll sleep better at night.

The IRS is getting serious. I think they've doubled their auditors so looking for anything. A layman doesn't have time to keep up with all the tax code and it's only going to get worse.

Try H&R Block - you would think they could figure that out.

Jacques Merde --- 12 years ago -

If nobody has a CPA they can recommend, then what are the CPA's I should avoid? Feel free to PM the answer. TIA!

JM, I will PM you the contact info for a gentleman here in KW that specializes in situations like yours. I've referred other clients to him in the past and they've all had nothing but positive experiences with him - regardless of if they ended up having to pony up additional $$ to the IRS in the end. Let me know if you have any questions or need any add'l information.
