DILLIGAFFAN --- 12 years ago -

So I went for my 3 month check at the Dr. 3-29-13, she changed 3 of my meds. and I have had the hives, headache, swelling, could scratch my own eyes out. I have been cutting one out a day to try and figure which one I am having the reaction to. But guess what? I didn't take any of them for the last 2 days and still have it. Waiting for the office to open to call and see what she can do to help. Any suggestions? I have taken a whole box of 24 Benadryl and haven't really gotten any relief.

TinktheSprite --- 12 years ago -

Some drug reactions can take weeks to disappear. Glad you are seeing the doctor. I got hives from antibiotics after 10 days. They lasted for 2 weeks. You have to wait til the meds are out of your body.

DILLIGAFFAN --- 12 years ago -

WOW! That's not what I wanted to hear, but thanks for the heads up.

IbarraFam222 --- 12 years ago -

The only allergy medicine that works on my son has been Allegra. He gets hives, itchy red swollen eyes, etc etc! Also rub hydrocortisone from the chest down. That should help. Dont miss a spot or the hives will show up there.

DILLIGAFFAN --- 12 years ago -

I have even piggy backed Zertec with the Benadryl, still nothing.

DILLIGAFFAN --- 12 years ago -

Ok, so Dr. just called back. Told me to stop all the new meds go pick up a script from CVS and come she her when I am done with the script. I hope it's not a long time before I finish and go in, because that mean I am off 3 of my main meds until than.

DILLIGAFFAN --- 12 years ago -

Still no relief yet. Does anyone know about how long this should last?

reactions don't disappear like POOF!

They can. I had a distonic reaction to compizene about 12 years ago. My eyes were rolling back in my head, my jaw and neck were distended, my tounge was sticking out of my mouth, all of which was completly uncontrolable. I went to the ER and they gave me a shot of Benadryl and I was fine in a matter of minutes.

MyOpinion --- 12 years ago -

my guess is your Dr. is giving you cortisone tablets or capsules for a few days to supress the reaction. you may not see any improvement for 24 to 48 hours. hang in there!

DILLIGAFFAN --- 12 years ago -

OMG! I may scratch my own eyes out by than.

Polly Ester --- 12 years ago -

how are you tonight? if it isn't better go to CVS and get CalaGel Antiseptic Gel, First Aid, Maximum Strength. It will give you relief from itching.

Dorothy Parker --- 12 years ago -

Take a zyrtec and a zantac together before bed and if you still have some hives in the morning, take them again....

It works!

So weird! That's the same thing DH was prescribed last time he had hives. I thought that doctor was NUTS. lol!!

Dorothy Parker --- 12 years ago -

That's the only thing that worked after going to doctors for over a YEAR to try and get rid of my hives.

They just recently flared up again and that combo is working. Thank God!

Polly Ester --- 12 years ago -

that is weird. so you just take them once a day or do you take throughout the day. i got hives when I had a bad upper respiratory infection last year. it was the worst thing ever. It took a long time to go away too. mY dr. prescribed corticosteroid tablets but they didn't help and bendryl didn't help either.

Dorothy Parker --- 12 years ago -

I take the 24 hour Zyrtec and the 150mg Zantac before bed and it keeps them 95% at bay...if I skip a dose, I will be covered in hives.

If one dose doesn't work, I will take it twice a day and that definitely works.

Winning --- 12 years ago -

They gave us 400 mg of Zantac and 10 mg Zyrtec to be taken morning and night. His were bad.

Dorothy Parker --- 12 years ago -

Yeah...when they are horrible, you double the dose on the zantac...

Hives are awful. :(

Polly Ester --- 12 years ago -

did you go to an allergist or just your regular dr? I am starting to get my annual upper respiratory infection and I am scared of getting hives again. I have never been as miserable in my life as I was with that itchy mess.

Dorothy Parker --- 12 years ago -

It was a dermatologist that finally solved my hives. I had seen a regular family doctor, an allergist, an endocrinologist and then a dermatologist.

Worst. Year. Ever.

Polly Ester --- 12 years ago -

oh, boy, that is awful. I never even thought to call my dermatologist.

AFWife --- 12 years ago -

Been there! Wouldn't wish it on anyone. I react to Reglan worse than compazine so I cannot have either. Every muscle in my body jerked & contorted for over an hour (Bendadryl did not bring relief).

DILLIGAFFAN --- 12 years ago -

I tried the zyrtec, but didnt add the zantac. I may try this because the meds. the DR. called in arnt working. I go back to see her on friday. This sh!t is almost worst that the pain the pills are for to begin with. Well not really be dam I am so over it.

Polly Ester --- 12 years ago -

I hope you get some relief soon. I know it is pretty horrible.

Peeking Boo --- 12 years ago -

Wow, sucky! I can't believe it hasn't subsided over the last few days. Crap like this makes me nervous to take any meds at all.

I hope you figure it out soon!

Aren't we a society of pill poppers?
The solution to any and all problems is another pill. Another to counteract the previous one!

Drs. seem to prescribe what ever the latest drug is depending upon what the salesman sells him on. "Practicing Medicene" indeed!

TV is nothing but one add after another for every possible problem and with the side affects you can expect.

Dr. prescribed Celebrex for shoulder strain. All it did was make me dizzy...yes, dizzier than usual.

Now it's one Alieve in the morning and one at bedtime. No problemw and it gives me relief from arthritis in my knees.

It's hell to be sick and hell to get old.

DILLIGAFFAN --- 12 years ago -

Believe me I wish I didn't have to take any of them, but I have 14 different I have to take each day. And before anyone says something about mood meds., no thats not one of them. I have several things wrong with me.

osteoarthritis
osteoporosis To the point I could brake my back lifting a laundry basket.
MS
CEBAR
fibromyalgia
degenerative disc
Migraine
seizures
hyperparathyroidism

There are a couple more, but those are the main ones. I am just a medical mess. LOL

DILLIGAFFAN --- 12 years ago -

Well the itch is almost gone, but the rash is still here. But I can handle the rash much better than the itching.
