Where can I check to see if it's legal to carry at reliant? Not the rodeo and concert just around the fairgrounds.

SineadORebellion --- 11 years ago -

Around the fairgrounds is fine from what I understand. It's inside Reliant, where the rodeo is considered a sporting event, that it is restricted.

Sideboom --- 11 years ago -

That is what I think also. I mean if it's concealed who knows right. Lol. Just want to be positive.

SineadORebellion --- 11 years ago -

Kinda sad that we have to ask if we can legally bring our own firearms to a rodeo! What the hell has happened to this country....

FabFive --- 11 years ago -

OMG I was just having this discussion with DH ten minutes ago. Do we have a definitive answer?

Sideboom --- 11 years ago -

I just called reliant center at 832-667-1400. Her response it is owned by Harris County. Government and unless I'm working I can not carry.
I called HPD downtown and that sgt did not know if I could or not.

FabFive --- 11 years ago -

Gee they were really helpful.

Sideboom --- 11 years ago -

Yes they were. I guess I will try a couple of places that teach the class and call the DAs office InThe morning. I try to be legal but at the same time protect myself and family.

I agree. We shouldn't have to ask permission.

Ogre13 --- 11 years ago -

I'm trying to figure out why the Humble Convention Center claims a 51% establishment exemption on the main building.

I don't recall any bars on the premise.

CRM6146 --- 11 years ago -

If you read the TX hangun laws it states where you can and cannot carry. You have to jump from section to section and look up definitions. Here is what I found: You can carry everywhere out there except in Reliant Stadium, as someone said above it is a professional sporting event so it is illegal to carry there. The fair grounds do not fit the definition of amusment park so it is legal to carry. The Reliant Arena and Reliant Center do not have the correct 30.06 sign posted, so again legal to carry.

FabFive --- 11 years ago -

But I don't think the concert(s) are a professional sporting event?? Even though it was designed for sports there are no sports during a concert.

CRM6146 --- 11 years ago -

The rodeo that precedes the concert is a sporting event.

FabFive --- 11 years ago -

Ok sorry for some reason it was in my head the question was just for the concert.

Rereading he asked specifically just the grounds, not rodeo or concert. I was confused.

Sideboom --- 11 years ago -

This from a lawyer friend who use to work at the DAs office.
My review of penal code section 46.035(b)(2) says No you cannot carry at rodeo bc school events (FFA) and pro sporting events (PRC) are taking place. Section (b)(1) alcohol sales may also apply. It's a 3rd degree felony or class A misdemeanor depending on which provision applies

So what's going to happen if a horse breaks its leg and there are none with a concealed firearm to properly dispatch it? I guess beat it in its head with a hammer or something? I don't know. Doesn't make sense.

crowbar

BlueBird --- 11 years ago -

CRM6146 - you did not take into consideration the section that discusses interscholastic activities. You cannot carry on the premises where a high school event or interscholastic event is taking place - this would cover the Exhibition Hall where the kids are doing FFA, art show, etc. Also, the Exhibition Hall has places that predominantly sell liquor.

Regardless of lack of signage, it would not be prudent to carry at the rodeo. Ignorance of the law is not a defense - and CHL holders are supposed to know the laws of where the can and cannot carry.

BlueBird --- 11 years ago -

same goes for the fairgrounds - school activities and liquor sales. (kind of an oxymoron, isn't it)

CRM6146 --- 11 years ago -

BlueBird you are correct, I did not even think about school events, thank you. You can carry where alcohol is sold, just not where the 51% sign is.

Sideboom --- 11 years ago -

I guess I got to depend on HPD to protect me or stay home.

Sideboom --- 11 years ago -

Thanks for all the comments and thoughts. I'll leave it at home. Be safe out there and "carry on"
