Just saw Humble ISD on Channel 2 news for using the lowest rated football helmets for this season (safety wise). Way to keep the kids safe playing sports! LOL NOT! And yes I am AWARE other school districts probably use the same or worse, but just wanted to share what I just saw and heard! :)

Yeah, I was not a happy camper when I saw that. My son plays football for Humble ISD and you can bet your butt I will be talking to the coach about it.

LAXmom --- 11 years ago -

Buy your own helmet and have him wear it. That's what we did.

Sweet Cherub --- 11 years ago -

Thanks LAXmom. I didn't even know we were allowed to do that. I will check in to it.

According to the Ch 2 website , Humble ISD is replacing those.

That's what I heard too. But, some people don't like to report all the facts, just the ones that support their agenda.

We've always purchased our own as well

Lucky me. My kids were in Awanas instead of a football field. Good Christian biblical upbringing with out the head trauma =D

justcat --- 11 years ago -

It actually depends on the coach. We were told the first year that you had to get a DR to say it was required. But last year we had a new AD and he had no issues.

Channel 2 Report

HUMBLE, Texas -
Humble Independent School District officials have decided to replace football helmets that received a low score in newly released helmet safety rankings, Local 2 Investigates has learned.

Some of HISD?s players used the Riddell VSR4, which received only one out of five stars in Virginia Tech?s football safety rating system. The helmets being replaced account for 10 percent of the district?s total helmets.

The new helmet rankings were released in May. Ratings released last year also showed the VSR4 ranking low on the list. The district said it learned of the rankings early this year.

?As soon as we became aware of the study we made the decision to pull those from our inventory and replace them,? district spokeswoman Jamie Mount told Local 2 Investigates. ?They will not be issued to students.?

Helmets ranking at the top of the list with five stars are the Schutt AiR XP Pro VTD, Schutt Vengeance VTD, Riddell 360, Rawlings Quantum Plus, Rawlings Tachyon Xenith EPIC, Xenith X2, Xenith X2E and Riddell Revolution Speed.

The Riddell VSR4 was the only helmet to receive one star.

Humble ISD was not the only school to use lower-rated helmets.

Waller ISD, Fort Bend ISD, Klein ISD and Conroe ISD also used lower-ranked helmets, according to those districts and open records requests filed by Local 2 investigative reporter Jace Larson.

I think Humble ISD should be applauded for removing those helmets when they learned of the ratings, good job!! I wonder if the other school districts have done the same?

I know that KPARK has very nice helmets and I do not think they are in that 10% of ones that need to be replaced. Last year my son had a brand new helmet that was very nice.

I am glad humble isd is fixing the situation.

There is NO safe helmet.

The brain will keep moving inside the skull regardless of any helmet. This is a risk you MUST accept if you play the game.
You can have the best helmet and still do plenty of damage.

Teach and learn proper ways to hit if you must play.

Agreed the helmet can only provide minimal increases in protection against certain violent collisions.

The real problem is that some atheletes (Youth to NFL) do not go to doctors when they experience concussions.

My son recieved a low grade concussion his Junior year, and was not on the field for 3 weeks. He felt great and wanted to play, but could not pass the basic concussion protocol administered by a doctor. Until he did, he did not participate.

There was no pressure from the staff, as we quickly removed them from the decision process.

No matter how good a coach or trainer is, neither of them are doctors.
