I need to micro-chip my Houdini, she has never gotten out of the yard but has taken the opportunity to run free when the front door is open too long. She can't wear a collar, she has literally chewed through 3 of them, and a harness. The vet we go to doesn't do them.

Pick a different vet. Just call around and ask. They should be $50 or less. The best and biggest registry is Home Again. Make sure that a) they use Home Again and b) that they register the chip for you. Some Vets only insert and require you to handle the registration which is $18. It's fine either way but don't be misled into believing your pet is registered if in fact they may not be. This is the key component that confuses people.

Good Luck. If you have more questions just ask.

Thanks I will ask lots of questions, after they put it in do they scan it to make sure it works?

They also microchip at SNAP.

I micro chipped our Lab at Glade Valley Vet on Northpark Dr. across from the Neighborhood Wal-Mart. Roughly $50 and all of the info is included to register your pets online so the chip can be read anywhere if your pet goes missing.

Registration online was not an additional fee. It was all included in the kit from the Vet, along with the numbered dog tag, and very easy to do at home on your computer.

Yes, they do scan it after it is put in the nape and use the scanner to pull up the number and show you. It's quick and easy and I didn't see any stress from my dog when they inserted it. Once home, you register and put in all of your contact info and can add additional names/numbers for contacts if the pet is lost. Most if not all Vet's will have a scanner and can check the chip each time you go in for a check-up.

It was only $25 when I had my dog chipped at All Community Vets on 59 in Porter.

The variation in price has to do with the brand of chip and if they register it for you or not. Some Vets register for you, inputting all your info. Others pay the fee for you but you still input the info, yet others only insert the chip and you have to input info and pay the fee. Understand what you're paying for ahead of time. I know I have said it already but I can not stress the importance of using Home Again. There are other brands out there but they have the biggest database that is monitored 24 hours and have the highest success rate.

Also, every time you take your pet in for a checkup ask them to scan it. This makes sure that a) it's still working and b) it hasn't migrated.

The Mobile vet clinics do it also for about half the price. Definitely the way to go.

I got an appointment with Loop 494 vet on Friday. Thanks for the help

Butterbean --- 10 years ago -

Micro chipping my Houdini would remove all the suspense.

Sath --- 10 years ago -

you can get some chain from lowes or some hardware store and a key ring they'll try to chew through about 3 times and then stop then feel free to put what you want on their neck

Walker Bait --- 10 years ago -

Thanks anyway sath but I got the chip this past Friday. Plus she is only 10 pounds and that would make her top heavy.
