Does anyone have any suggestions with coping with depression? Are there any low cost or free resources you know of that help with someone who may be suicidal (yet doesn't have any other issues like addiction, poverty etc)

JHMO, the only thing that makes a permanent difference is changing the pattern of thinking of the individual. That takes time, and they have to actively try to take control of their own thought patterns.

There is probably some therapies that do this type of training, but so does active, daily Bible reading. It literally transforms one's mind to think differently.

I know that isn't a popular opinion, but it is a true one.

And just to clarify, I'm not saying that it will "cure" depression necessarily. Some of the strongest Christians ever have suffered terribly with depression. But it does give perspective. Within Christianity, you understand that your "deserts" are where God does his molding, shaping, pruning, and refining, and that on the other side of that process is the "promised land."

Any insurance? Call around and see what they charge. here is a link

You need to see a psychiatrist who can help give you a depression medication. And then see a psychologist to discuss your issues.

Good luck.

If a person is suicidal you need to call 911. Don't play around with that!!

Any suggestions on depression meds that do not alter your state significantly, make you feel trashed, or make you feel emotionless?

Plain Bellied Sneetch --- 10 years ago -

Many people are prescribed Wellbutrin (generic is Buproprion) for depression. Generally, there's no loss of energy or emotion, and if you smoke, it helps you to quit!

My neighbor received help last year when she wasvtrying to deal with her divorce at Familytime crisis and counseling center in Humble I know she was in a serious financial bind so she paid very little. They are a charity.

Oh please go get some help from someone. Reach out. Don't let it eat you up. I don't know where to start, but is a family member an option?

I have a disability that causes extreme depression/anxiety. I've tried "just dealing with it", I tried to figure out what it was I was scared or depressed about, and it was nothing, there was no thinking-it-away, I was just freaking out about nothing. Im not sure if you have this same chemical depression, but most doctors will not understand what youre talking about. Most people have never felt this feeling in their entire life. It's like trying to describe a color that one hasnt ever seen before. All the docs wanted to give me antidepressants, but one tested my vitamin level and found low B12 and D. I took prescription B12 and D and that made all of it go away. Im now switching to over the counter methcobalamin to see if that works just as good. The b vits you find at your average grocery store wont work, they will probably make you sick.

http://www.mhmraharris.org/. They have mental health counselors 24/7. They can help you find the resources that you are needing. I have family members that live with depression everyday, and some of my family have lost that battle. It affects everyone around you. Please seek help. You may not feel like anyone will care, but the devastation that is left behind after suicide is unbelievable. Please get help before it gets to that point.

Yes, MHMRA of Harris County. If it's an emergency the Harris County Psychiatric Center.

MHMRA is free for those with low income. Psychiatrists, therapists, medication management.

If your a vet, you could go to the VA

An SSRI won't make you feel like a zombie. People with (non situational) depression are that way because their brains are not correctly balancing their serotonin levels. It is a medical condition, not something you can will away. It needs to be medicated just like you would with diabetes or cancer. There is a ridiculous stigma on depression.

If a person is feeling suicidal, call the suicide hotline, 911, or take them to an emergency room.

Depression is HIGHLY treatable and CURABLE.

Please seek immediate professional/medical help.

Suicide Help

I must insist you don't rely on KU doctors.
