DH has been diagnosed with Severe Sleep Apnea and will be receiving a CPap machine this week. While Sleep Apnea is dangerous for anyone, this is especially true of DH and his current medical conditions. I have looked at YouTube and read up online. But firsthand experience is always the best. Can you tell me about them and share your hints?
Are they noisy?
Will he have trouble adjusting to using it? Wearing the mask, etc..
Is it easy to travel with? Carry On? Checked luggage?
Will it bother my sleep or anyone else in the house? (Though it can't be any worse than his snoring)

Prior to my wife's passing, she had a Resmed Airsense 10.

It was very quiet (in fact, I couldn't hear it running) and it was very portable (it would easily fit beneath the seat on an airline, or in the overhead compartment).

It also eliminated the issue of snoring. Before she started using it, she'd rattle the walls!

I think with most CPAP machines, the user has to get use to wearing it, but once they do, they wake up feeling as though they got a good night sleep, and I did too.

Here's a link to it, Tink ...

I wear a CPAP machine at night also because I have severe sleep apnea. There are two types of masks that you can wear one will just go around your head and to your nose. the other one is a full facial mask that covers up your nose and your mouth. it is quite loud. It also can, come with a water tank to breathe in some humidity. It is a pain in the butt sometimes because you can accidentally take it off in the middle of the night. That was one of my problems I was taking it off in the middle of the night throwing it on the floor and it was no good for me because of that.

Years ago "cpap" (continuous positive air pressure) machines were noisy and difficult to use. The newest "apap" (automated positive air pressure machines are very quiet and much easier to use. The most difficulty is adjusting to the mask of which there are many types (nasal, nasal pillow, full face, oral, hybrid, total face, etc.) Read the reviews before selecting. He may have to try a few options before finding what works best. Most pulmonologists or sleep centers will have trial or rental masks to sue to find what works. Most insurance require lease or trial before purchase anyway to make sure it works for you. Lots of web sites with lots of helpful info. Just Google cpap hints or help.

My daughter has one and you would never know it was on. It stopped her snoring. I know there are many types of masks. They told her she could try as many as she liked, so she could decide which one worked the best for her. She gets all her supplies through the mail. I am sure it all depends on your insurance and who they work with.

TinktheSprite --- 8 years ago -

Thanks Everyone. We have BCBS. They never mentioned to us about purchasing a C/Apap machine out right. So it will be their choice. All I know it that it took a long time to get one approved! As far as "supplies", how often do you have to change out the mask? What other supplies are there?? TIA

sheddy --- 8 years ago -

My daughter doesn't live with me, but I think they have schedule and they mail the stuff to her, unless she needs something sooner. I know she uses distilled water. I do know that they know when and how long she uses it.

TinktheSprite --- 8 years ago -

Thanks so much.

Both of my parents use one. My dad travels frequently for work and his machine and all of the "accessories" fit easily in his rolling carry on. If he's going on a longer trip he has a little backpack that he puts it in to leave more space in his suitcase.

TinktheSprite --- 8 years ago -

Thanks Reh6110. That is promising. I am anxious to see how large the unit and accessories are. We tend to travel. I look forward to DH getting a good night's sleep finally for the first time in his life! Lately, he has been tired all.the.time.

TinktheSprite --- 8 years ago -

This is very interesting! Thanks to Saturn for the heads up. The CPap company, Texas Home Medical was not doing their research fully and just lumped us into the pile along with how "most" of their clients get covered, that is renting the CPap machine indefinitely. But because of Saturn's experience, and my research, we will get the Cpap purchased, 100% paid by BCBS as our policy says. It was a good thing we were on our toes or we would have ended up spending money we didn't need tom not knowing any better. I am sure they never would have caught their mistake either. THANKS, SATURN!!

SagaciousSighFiGurl (Mod) --- 8 years ago -

Every time I see this title, it looks like it says cr@p machine. Lol

voice of reason --- 8 years ago -

i thought it was going to be about a papsmear.

SagaciousSighFiGurl (Mod) --- 8 years ago -

Lol!

mutton --- 8 years ago -

I see the cr@p every time also, only reason I click on, lol.

DH wore Crap for a while but tended to get sinus issues wearing...has given it up.

TinktheSprite --- 8 years ago -

Obviously SighFi, Voice, and Mutton don't snore. Or at least they don't know that they DO! LOL I just wonder how many elderly are getting ripped off not knowing what they are covered under?? Reading that stuff is hard to decipher. Then you have to go to bat for yourself! I must say BCBS Customer Service has been nice to us. They confirm everything and often take us to 3-Way calls to clear us of large bills sent to us. Gotta be on top of things!!

mutton --- 8 years ago -

DH tells me I am a machine! Lol. I will say could hear DH stop breathing, is scary waiting for them to start back up!

mutton --- 8 years ago -

Did enjoy having the excuse to kick start him, lol. Hope he no sees this...dam goose I say!

TinktheSprite --- 8 years ago -

Right?! I finally just had to leave the room to get a good night's sleep. No sense both of us waking up tired!

mutton --- 8 years ago -

Thinking I feel more sorry for the pooches if one is there for the night, lol.

TinktheSprite --- 8 years ago -

The dogs have figured out what's going on. One is loyal to DH but the others try to be fair amd swap out and go to the other bed in the middle of the night.

mutton --- 8 years ago -

Lmao...ours would go for the most quiet room, would be quite the contest I understand, lol.

Mr Duflochy --- 8 years ago -

Sleep apena will destroy your life.....I was waking up 44 times per hour, never got any rest......

TinktheSprite --- 8 years ago -

44 times, Mr. Duflochy?! WOW! DH's test came back as "severe". I wonder how many times he woke up??

Mr Duflochy --- 8 years ago -

I quit taking a lot of medican after about a week on c=pap.....

Barnstormer --- 8 years ago -

Yea uhhh....if the dog sleeps by the CPAP and has gas and farts.....you'll have wierd dreams.

Emperor of Kingwood --- 8 years ago -

Yeah, during my last round of heart surgery, the surgeon informed my wife that I have sleep apnea and that it needs to get treated. Apparently I snore under general anesthesia (it doesn't bother me). DW confirmed this. There's no way I'm sleeping with a Freddie Kruger mask all night.

Emperor of Kingwood --- 8 years ago -

I wonder how many times he woke up??

You are not supposed to wake up several times throughout the night? DW says that I stop breathing and then gasp for air. I don't recall any of that happening.

TinktheSprite --- 8 years ago -

There's no way I'm sleeping with a Freddie Kruger mask all night.
Dh will go to try on several different masks. They have tiny ones. They have Freddy Kruger masks but I think those are for children or those who wish to cover both mouth and nose, or those who take them off in their sleep. All I know is when you stop breathing for a length of time, several times, that it's not good for you. Not good at all. And yes, as a wife, it's horrifying to hear that. I used to poke DH's belly to get him to breath.
