If you think there is a big pot where all your FICA contributions go into and you can only take from that pot of your own, you are grossly uninformed. Disability may reduce your SS a bit but depending on how long you are disabled for, you can quickly empty your pot and start hitting up the pots of your neighbors as you continue to draw and live on the public dole.

As you correctly pointed out, you really don't have a pot of money reserved for you. What you have is a promise to pay from the government. If you collect SS now, your getting money that others a paying in now.
Also, SS was never intended to be a persons sole retirement and it was never intended to be a disability program. Its a straight up Ponzi scheme.
