There have been a lot of visits to the local nurseries lately. Show my your flowers!!

Here's one of my flower beds. The white and pink snapdragons are winter annuals that will collapse once the weather turns consistently warm. By then the red impatiens will be out in force. And if we're lucky the shell gingers will provide awesome background and scent behind it. It took 4 flats to fill up this flower bed.

Beautiful choices!

Alllli --- 13 years ago -

It looks beautiful ! Doesn't even look like you just planted them.

TinktheSprite --- 13 years ago -

The snapdragons have been there all winter and the summer impatiens are planted between. But that's Natius for you! I tell you their plants even in flats are bigger than most! That was standard flat size. Tomorrow I will take a pic of the 4" flat plants. They are huuuuuge!

Alllli --- 13 years ago -

Yea they are big, you did a great job . I bet your garden looks WOW! I need to finish mine still.

QueenCassie --- 13 years ago -

I haven't been able to do any flowers yet, I am hoping to start this week.
But my DD's & I did plant seeds today for veggies & herbs, 14 different varieties. Can't wait to watch them grow!

Wow, those are something else. They look much more mature b/c they are so big!

TinktheSprite --- 13 years ago -

I got these at KW Garden Center af few weeks ago. They Strawberry Begonias. They are not known for their flowery show as much as their leaf color but I like them just fine.

Purple Shamrock Plant, oxalis will disappear in the heat. But I hope not before reseeding and giving me new plants. Warren's Southern Garden Center.

Soooo pretty! I hope tomorrow's storms don't do any damage to all of our little gardens.

TinktheSprite --- 13 years ago -

I got this Leopard plant at KW Garden Center last year. It wintered over nicely. It likes shade and is always thirsty!

I am hooked on coral bells. This new one is called Purple Palace from Warren's. It supposed to get 18" tall.

My little guy peeking through the Toad Lily. These will get 18" tall and have bitty little purple and yellow, orchid like flowers in the fall. The leaves are mottled like a toad. They come back every year. I got them from my neighbor.

I keep forgetting to mention to anyone interested in clay pots.
Home Depot has some really nice pot-bellied pots with 2 handles, I'm thinking may be about 22"-24" high. They are nicely coated inside, with hole in the bottom.
They are stained all different colors and are like $17.99
I got 3 last year that may have been just a little bigger and they are great to set out by the pool for plants.

Love this thread! Thank you so much for sharing. I bought some of the Purple Shamrock last year. I planted it in the shade around the base of a large pine tree. I did really well there until it got cold. I bought some more this week and think i will keep it in a container on my deck this year to see how it does.

anyone on here grows in containers only?? i rent so i want to have some nice flowers and plants in containers.. i have lots of containers but am clueless in what is good to grow in them.

~grandma again~ --- 13 years ago -

funmom, you can grow anything in containers. i have lots of things in containers because i like to move them around and don't have to worry about Buddy laying on them. i have flowers, herbs and veggies in containers. good soil, good drainage and fertilizer are best way to be successful in container gardening.

It is I WhyWhyWhy --- 13 years ago -

I wish some of you were my neighbors beautiful stuff you got there especially 8675309.

Jennygirl --- 13 years ago -

Funmom: my plumerias are in pots. They smell really good and are easy to take care of. I usually kill all plants but have managed to keep this one alive and well.

~grandma again~ --- 13 years ago -

funmom, you know we have mosquitoes out here really bad. well, i went to Kingwood Garden Center and got some stuff called Skeeter Screen. it WORKS!!!! keeps them away for up to 200 square feet. i am going back to get more. the oil they use smells so good, too!!

I have 4 pots of these.

~grandma again~ --- 13 years ago -

beautiful, jennygirl! i bet they smell so good!!

Jennygirl --- 13 years ago -

They do! I haven't killed anything I have planted in pots, however I killed everything I planted in my flowerbed in the front of my house. :( If my HOA wasn't such nazi's I would put pots of flowers into the ground and just cover it up with mulch. lol. lazy way of doing it.

~grandma again~ --- 13 years ago -

jennygirl, how would the hoa know if you are covering the pots?

my mom would have beautiful flower beds. she would take the bag of soil and lay it in the flower bed. she punched some holes in the bag for drainage, flipped it over, cut it open, planted plants in it (pots and all) and covered with mulch. when the weather got too cold, she would just pull the pots of flowers up and move them to the garage until it warmed up again. that always worked for her.

sweetscreaminmonkey --- 13 years ago -

oooo.. now i have to go flower shopping.. i want to start an herb garden too.. but i may need to start small at first lol

GA,thanks i will have to come and get some.. with our house backing up to the woods the skeeters have been nuts and with my reaction to the bites i would be in for another long summer of itching for sure...:)

GA, I am glad to hear that the Shamrock plant can possibly stick around for the summer. My transplants die back but that maybe due to lack of water at their location. Your Shamrock plant didn't multiply?? I had some transplants from years ago. Recently, I moved them to a better location. I hope my new plant reseeds as well.

~grandma again~ --- 13 years ago -

mine did not reseed because i moved it around so much, i am sure. i can tell you it did like water but not wet feet. you know they are an inside or outside plant..right?

TinktheSprite --- 13 years ago -

Jennygirl! I love your plumeria and crocuses! I have an old plumeria that nearly died in the freeze we had a few years ago while in the ground. It has since been moved to a pot and babied every winter since then. My newest plumeria is red. I can't wait to see what it does! I have planted things in pots underground before, especially if it is not winter hardy. The pots seem to hold the water around it better, too. I cut off the bottoms of the pots to give their roots room to grow. The pots make it easier to lift out, put into a new pot and winter over.

8675309 are those lights there for heat in the cold or are you just that proud?? lol........good idea

TinktheSprite --- 13 years ago -

Funmom, Google "Container Gardening". If the pot is large enough and you have the right plant specimens, you can have a potted garden as well as a potted veggie garden. That's what Patio Tomatoes are for! ;)

Red, We had a couple of celebrations in our back yard last year. I took 3 days to hang those lights in all the trees and made for a festive evening for my company. I planned on leaving them around the palms for heat, as you say, but since it took so long to hang them all, they have stayed up.

I just want to thank all you green thumbs out there for posting the photos of your handiwork. I can't get out and work in the soil like that - green plants and pollen make me break out. But I do enjoy looking at beautiful flowers. Thanks!

Riding Teacher --- 13 years ago -

Wow, great pictures. I needed some inspiration to take care of my flowerbeds. I wish I could figure out how to post pics - I took some of the wildflowers at our property this weekend...so pretty! We have petunias growing wild in a BIG area - I couldn't believe it when I saw it!
