Tried it for the first time today. took my two elementary early release kiddos. Service was great and the food was delicious. I had a cup of chili which was good. It could have had a little more kick to it but it is made for the masses. Also had the tobacco onions and fried green tomatoes. Both were very tasty. I know we didnt go during a heavy rush hour like 12:10 pm on a Sunday so I cant speak to the service when they are packed. we all enjoyed the meal. Hope they stick around for a while

MAR --- 13 years ago -

We came across it also a few weeks ago! The homemade desserts....yum..but limited, so they had run out of several by midweek.

Frio --- 13 years ago -

I can't wait to try it. Getting DH to go is like pulling teeth...he doesn't like good ol' food like that.

nathan --- 13 years ago -

Tell Gabe they sell Tacos and budlight Frio!

Frio --- 13 years ago -

Will do!

♥Blessed 4 Ever♥ --- 13 years ago -

It was just ok when we tried out.

oy with the poodles already --- 13 years ago -

We tried it out for lunch today and the food was great! The pot roast po boy was enormous and delicious. I snuck a few of my mom's fries and instantly regretted subbing mine for green beans. The green beans were good, but the fries were *really* good! Hand cut! We were there around 2:00 and there were still about 7 or 8 tables full. I wouldn't call the service slow, but it was relaxed. Nothing is frozen, all made to order, so it takes a little longer. The staff was friendly and the music was good (if a little loud). I didn't mind lingering a little. I'll definitely be back!

3monkeysmomma --- 13 years ago -

We were really impressed too. The cheeseburger was yummy and huge!

needsleep --- 13 years ago -

Where is this new place??

momof6monkeys --- 13 years ago -

We cant wait to go either!!!

oy with the poodles already --- 13 years ago -

Mom had the cheeseburger and it was gigantic! She only managed to eat half of it. We could have easily shared.

Needem, it is on WLH in the same shopping center as Fiesta Azteca and Edible Arrangements.

Abigail --- 13 years ago -

Have been very happy each time we went and I have tried different things- all excellent! I just need to figure out how to save room for their amazing desserts! :)

dingdong --- 13 years ago -

eggs benedicts are amazing--fries -- wow

Gigix4 --- 13 years ago -

Great diner food.

zapper007 --- 13 years ago -

Went for breakfast at 11 AM...

Had the Corned Beef Hash (actually steak) with 2 eggs on top.

DELISH!!!

Service was very attentive and prompt. They seemed busy...

Hakuna Matatted --- 13 years ago -

We went there today for breakfast and it was sooooo good!! I have enough leftover for lunch and everyone was very friendly.

I look forward to returning!

doglady --- 13 years ago -

Went about a month ago. I had the meat loaf, very good, son had burger w/chorizo, he said very good.. Husband had the special which was a blackened fish of some kind and COULD NOT eat it. My husband NEVER complains! They did offer something else, but he declined. Thought they might have taken it off the bill, but did not. Nice people, guess it just depends on what you have??? Oh-they did give my husband a dessert, but really thought they shouldn't have charged since he DID NOT eat it or anything else. Except the dessert.

RedMulch --- 13 years ago -

Tell Gabe they sell Tacos and budlight Frio!

Did they finally get a liquor license?

gardeniagirl07 --- 13 years ago -

I think this sounds like some lip smackin' Southern style food.

Gigix4 --- 13 years ago -

I think this sounds like some lip smackin' Southern style food.

Pretty much.

Ersatz --- 13 years ago -

The blueberry pancakes are sinful. You will eat them with your eyes closed. Mmm!

ladybeachbum --- 13 years ago -

Just got back from the Hot Spot Diner. Dh and I had a late breakfast there and I probably will not eat the rest of the day. We had the Diner deluxe and there was so much food that even dh could not eat it all. I added a cup of gravy so I could taste the gravy. For me, the biscuit and gravy would have been enough. It is very southern gravy with sausage. The pancakes that come with this plate is as big as the plate, no kidding and it is a regular size plate! I wasn't crazy about the bacon because it wasn't crisp but I didn't ask for it to be so my fault. I didn't eat much of the potatoes because I was too busy eating the gravy and biscuit and those pancakes! The large oj is huge and the diet coke was good, not flat like most restaurants. Dh liked the coffee and he is a coffee snob, well, maybe not because I doubt he's ever been to Starbucks, but he likes good coffee. The man lingered way too long for me.
It does take longer than going to Ihop but with any small business being able to judge just the right number of employees is difficult. Our waitress was excellent!
So if you are really hungry this is the place to go! I have never eaten that much breakfast ever and I left half!

Puss In Boots --- 13 years ago -

I think the food there is fine.

However, the decor....really lousy....still looks like a Chinese restaurant to me.

Maybe a job for "Restaurant Impossible"? Hmmmm.....

ladybeachbum --- 13 years ago -

Puss, it's a diner so really since it was nice and clean, no problem at all. We were trying to remember what was there before and I thought it was the Chinese place. I love purple so it was fine. Clean works for me.

Puss In Boots --- 13 years ago -

Dining encompasses food, decor and atmosphere.

Just sayin. ;)

ladybeachbum --- 13 years ago -

LOL, to me this is not a fine dining establishment nor are they trying to be. I am guessing a couple starting their first business on a shoestring and trying to make a go of it. Been there, done that, still do. I wish them all the best!

Puss In Boots --- 13 years ago -

LOL, to me this is not a fine dining establishment

Who said anything about FINE dining. Any restaurant needs to sync with it's decor....not just fine dining.

And then we wonder why places like City Eats can't make it. Bad location: yes. Great food: yes. Horrible dining space: yes.

ladybeachbum --- 13 years ago -

City Eats was as you said, the Hot Spot has plenty of space to sit and eat. I liked City Eats but the same thing, owner trying to make a living. Their decor is as good as I Hop but their food is better. I must not go out to the right places because I can not think of one place that I consider the decor to be awesome unless it might be the Aquarium and I must eat out 4 or 5 times a week. But hey, I am too full to argue and I am guessing the decor is the last thing they want to worry about.
Tell me which restaurants you think have great decoration and I will try them!

Ladybug --- 13 years ago -

I just got back from the Hot Spot too, ladybeachbum! Had a great breakfast for lunch...that's one of the things I love about that place. Breakfast anytime! I rather LIKE the decor in there. It's clean, in the first place, and looks nice without being overdone, secondly! I've never been to a restaurant because of their decor...but to each his own I guess! LOL!!

Puss In Boots --- 13 years ago -

You guys are seriously cracking me up.

What I can't understand is that you seem to completely diss the idea of ambiance and atmosphere in dining out. Maybe you are defensive because you think I am attacking this place, which I am not. The food is average for a diner and I would go back again. I have eaten at Hot Spot Diner, and have taken friends there as well.

You seem to completely dismiss the idea of surroundings being an integral part of the dining experience...here are some local examples...Akashi Sushi....Raffa's (don't you just HATE that view?!)....

If sitting and enjoying your meal is a false concept...then why don't you just strap yourself to a moving conveyor belt and they can shovel the food in as you "drive by." LOL...

IMO, the only places that get by with lousy decor are the ones that have spectacular food, or are known for a specialty, ie. Hamburger dive, etc.

Purple seats with a few token car license plates just doesn't hit the spot....in my opinion....or am I allowed to voice one???

ladybeachbum --- 13 years ago -

Ladybug, that is my thoughts...clean, simple decor, did I say CLEAN? It is actually too nice for a diner!
I will say, if you are on a diet, order lightly. I am still stuffed and can't convince myself to get off my couch.

The only thing they are missing is silk flowers in their flower pots...

;)

ladybeachbum --- 13 years ago -

Now, Puss, that really made me laugh! I might take them a bunch! You still didn't say where you thought the decor was great. I really want to know because I think I have been almost everywhere around here except Sorrento's and Hot Spot looks like any diner in a mall or strip center I have ever seen but remember I like purple!

Puss In Boots --- 13 years ago -

You obviously didn't read my post. And I LOVE purple.

zapper007 --- 13 years ago -

It is actually too nice for a diner!

You have apparently NEVER eaten in a real diner in the northeast!!!

They are usually spotless, have efficient staff, and tons of delicious food. Our favorite has a menu that is in a small book, with 7 pages - front and back...

Why not try to be positive for a change???

ladybeachbum --- 13 years ago -

Zapper, go back and read, please! Read it all slowly. I posted for the positive!
Oh, you are right about ONE thing, I have NEVER eaten in a diner in the NE.

ladybeachbum --- 13 years ago -

Puss, you are right! I didn't see your post above. I agree Raffa's has nice decor and a great view. I don't think I could compare them to a diner though. I just last night said to dh that we needed to go back to Raffa's. I love the food there. I forgot to post that Skeeter's no longer has flies at the drink box. Now, there's a place with no decor! My chicken fingers were really good though and my margarita hit the spot! I guess when we are just going out to eat unless it is to someplace more special, I don't care what the decor is I just want food that is decent and a clean place.

TinktheSprite --- 13 years ago -

All I require is good food and cleanliness. If I am in the mood for more than eating, then perhaps atmosphere is a plus. I have eaten at many hole-in-the-wall, mom and pop dumps where serviceware and furniture didn't match and where they needed a paint job. But when the owner strives for top notch foods, it shows. So I return for a good meal. Period. Hot Spot sounds better than any hole-in-the-wall. I sill have yet to go.

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 13 years ago -

My God, don't they have anything that isn't fattening?? And then, the portions are huge-I gotta go with Puss,-ambiance is important, service, and of course, great food-if you want to try a great diner (N.E. style) with large portions, but real deli food, try Ziggies,in the Galleria area-of course, all the best restaurants are around there, and near town-oh, man, I miss the restaurants, and the shopping..
