A nurse who transferred a prank phone call from two Australian radio presenters about the Duchess of Cambridge has died in a suspected suicide – two days after being duped.

The body of Jacintha Saldanha, who was working on the switchboard, was found at an address yards away from King Edward VII Hospital, where she worked, just before 9.30am today.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge issued a statement saying they are 'deeply saddened' by the tragedy and said: 'Their thoughts and prayers are with Jacintha Saldanha’s family, friends and colleagues at this very sad time.'

This is SO SO Sad!!!

AngieKaye --- 12 years ago -

Suicide or do you feel its a conpiracy that she was killed and made to look like suicide. You dont mess with the royal family i have heard!

kidsfan3 --- 12 years ago -

I was getting ready to post this. This is horrible. I hope those 2 deejays feel good about themselves right about now! NOT! Their cute little "joke" turned into something terrible!

Froggie --- 12 years ago -

Oh my gosh!!!!!

Very sad indeed

= [

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 12 years ago -

I'm not much of a conspiracy theorist- I think she must have been a very troubled person, because no one in their right mind would kill themselves over something like this.. I can't imagine the royalty killing someone for making a stupid mistake!!!

FabFive --- 12 years ago -

This is AWFUL. They never should have pulled the prank to begin with. There are just some lines that shouldn't be cross. May her soul rest in peace.

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 12 years ago -

amen to that-

napoleon --- 12 years ago -

I just read that - that is so horrible and so sad.

LittleGill --- 12 years ago -

Don't blame the djs.

Perfection --- 12 years ago -

Don't blame the djs.

Why not?

If they drove this person over the edge, how are they not responsible?

ghostpost --- 12 years ago -

I am so saddened to hear that. The DJs should have not pranked the hospital of course, but the switchboard put the call through to the nurse, so I am guessing she thought it had been screened. I figured that was also one of the reason they released Kate from the hospital yesterday..probably have a private nurse living with her now.

Hiro Protagonist --- 12 years ago -

If they drove this person over the edge,

Because no one "drove someone over the edge."

An obviously unstable person did what unstable people do. You could've done that call to a 100 people and 99 wouldn't have done anything except feel stupid. They just had the bad luck to call a suicidal person. They didn't make her that way.

Just Aitch --- 12 years ago -

She was the nurse that transferred the call to the ward. Not the nurse that was recorded, by the DJs.

The nurse who died was the person who first took the hoax call and transferred it through to Catherine's ward, the hospital said. - KPRC

FabFive --- 12 years ago -

It doesn't matter if she was previously suicidal or not. The point is that you don't call a hospital pretending to be someone you're not and try to get a health status report on someone you have no business having a status report on. It's wrong, regardless of the suicide. Some lines should not be crossed, even if they are done as a prank or for the amusement of others. Humanity has a code of ethics (or maybe not) and the code of ethics was breeched.

Oh, okay. It had to be a nightmare and stressful for her...it was broadcasted all over the world. It is too bad people can not realize how temporary most of our mistakes and stresses in life are. I wonder if she had been fired. It was a mistake, but certainly not a life or death one.

Which is still a far cry from them being "responsible for her death." What they did was a breech of impropriety, she had an unreasonable(also crazy) reaction to said breech of impropriety.

Isn't that illegal to pretend to be someone you aren't?

Hiro Protagonist --- 12 years ago -

Aren't you the same folks that always talk about "personal responsibility?"

The only person that can be responsible for a suicide is the person that did it.

The only possible exception I can see to this, is if you know a person is mentally ill and you egg them on, and supply the means to do it. Other than that, it's all on the person that commits suicide.

Perfection --- 12 years ago -

And the criminal charges for pretending to be someone else to garner protected information is on the criminals.

Absolutely. If they broke the law by doing that, they can be charged. Still doesn't make them responsible for the suicide though.

Who are you talking to?

If me, I never suggested they are responsible for her death. What I said was this:

Maybe this is a hoax to return the favor to the DJ's?

SagaciousSighFiGurl (Mod) --- 12 years ago -

The Dj's were obviously dolts to do that and out of line. But DJ's all over the world do crap like that daily. Pranking is now part of their job description, and for the most part some are really funny. But this circumstance was out of line.

That being said THAT situation should not move any stable person to commit suicide and leave their children motherless. Something was awry with her, obviously. It's very sad, all of it.

Laurabeth --- 12 years ago -

I agree 100%

stop it. they are not responsible for this. she was probably going to off herself long before this.

MavMan --- 12 years ago -

You are correct Mary. It is a very sad event. My thoughts and prayers are with her family. However, this woman did not even say 5 words to those DJ's. She was obviously troubled before this. Perhaps hearing herself on the internet was what pushed her over the edge. If it was not that, something else would have convinced this woman to take her own life.

Ms Saldanha answered the hoax call at 5.30am on Wednesday morning and transferred the call through to Kate's ward.

It is hard to know where to draw the line. I have heard radio programs where they call a guy's wife or even exgirlfriend to prank her. Nothing came of it, but I can see where it would have been embarrassing. Who is to know if the receiver is dealing with other things that this could be the last straw.

In some cultures, a huge embarrassment or being professionally demoted or fired is a much bigger deal than it is in others. it isn't that unusual in those cultures to commit suicide rather than shame your family.

I don't know where that line is but if I had teenagers at home I would using this as an opportunity to discuss with them how pranks can go terribly wrong.

Just like some of the risky pranks teens do while driving, drinking, hazing, etc. can have horrible life changing outcomes, this did too.

Trekk --- 12 years ago -

Any way you slice it, it's just sad ...

Dorothy Parker --- 12 years ago -

I don't understand the appeal of DJ pranks....I've heard where they call the wife and pretend to be a strip club owner and the guy didn't settle his bill....why is that funny? Or saying something happened to their home or loved one...where is there humor in that?

Very sad that this woman took her life over a stupid prank. :(

Perfection --- 12 years ago -

How was this any different than bullying the poor woman?

snowprincess --- 12 years ago -

Calling pretending to be someone authorized to discuss another person's medical condition is illegal. Putting the conversation on the radio is disgusting.

The British take their royalty seriously (I don't get it, but they really do). Why won't the foreign media leave them alone? They are people not animals on display.

snowprincess --- 12 years ago -

same thing.

GeorgiaPeach --- 12 years ago -

Ditto. The DJs were being jackazzes for doing the prank, but the poor woman obviously had significant psychological problems to begin with before this happened.

I feel bad for all involved. Mental illness can be devastating for all concerned. Early intervention and support from friends and family often make a difference.

If someone you suspect needs help - PLEASE step up and be there for them.

hummer --- 12 years ago -

Dis can be trouble.
I recall some years back that the radio station reported an early time change.
They reported time had shifted one hour.
So, people thought they were late to work, Late to school or late for plane flights.

After their joke I no longer listened to their station. I thought time was an obligation to be reported accurately. I can't believe this ddn't violate fcc rules.

hummer --- 12 years ago -

Conspiracy!!!

Hummmmmm.......
