Someone tried to break into our garage last Saturday night but was not so pleasantly greeted by our 70 lb. Bulldog waiting for them on the other side of the garage door. They slammed our door when our dogs started going crazy and that is what woke us. They are pretty fortunate our dogs were there to change their mind. It might not have been a good outcome for the thugs if they proceeded to come in our house.

JAMS --- 12 years ago -

No, my neighborhood is pretty sweet. We don't have the crime that plagues your area.

Loki --- 12 years ago -

Sure did!

But all they did was try to access my computer. They didn't steal anything.

Oh, and it wasn't a forced entry. Door was locked, then it wasn't. MAGIC.

why would you put your dogs in harm's way?

shouldn't you be watching out for your
dogs' safety, instead of using them as
as an unregistered weapon?

Badger1950 --- 12 years ago -

My home is protected by my Second Amendment Rights ...

It wouldn't be too smart for a bad guy to break into my house, or my garage, when I'm home.

hoosierdaddy --- 12 years ago -

We have never had a break in attempt so I didn't consider our garage unsafe. Our dogs sleep in the garage when the weather is mild. I didn't knowingly put my dogs in harms way. Now since this incident, they won't be sleeping in the garage anymore. If my dogs weren't out there and they had intentions of coming into our home, it could have been a worse outcome.

FabFive --- 12 years ago -

That is ridiculous. My dogs are absolutely important to me but I will give my dogs life long before I will give a child's. Glad your dogs scared them off.

FabFive --- 12 years ago -

And, they should be glad your dogs did too. If they had made it any farther you might have killed them.

then there's option c

it is far more proactive than cowering in a closet waiting for the police to save you before the thieves opt to kill any unintended witnesses to the crime

see, this option it protects both you and your kids - just in case the dogs can't finish the job themselves

kari.kolo,

It was coincidence my dogs were there. They were not placed there to do a job. My dogs can protect this family from any part of the house. The hoodlums were very fortunate they were scared off by my dogs though because yes, if they stepped foot in my house, they would have got option c.

Watch dogs, or any dog, is one of the biggest deterrents to a break in crime.

Leaving your dog in your own back yard is putting your dog in harm's way? LOL

I want a camera system, but I don't know where to start when looking for one.

I love how the first answer for a deterrent is "get a dog!". I can't have a dog.

Camera, guns, and good neighbors. That's my protection :)

FabFive --- 12 years ago -

Yes the whole point is that they dogs woke the owners up. It could have been much worse if they had in fact come into the garage and/or house while the OP slept. Dogs are a great alert system. Far better than ADT.

We lo e our dogs very much but they are absolutely here for our safety as well. Our entire property is fenced you can't get to my house without coming through my dogs. If they only wound someone that person will wish the dogs had finished them off.

First, don't bother with the big obtrusive cameras. Some people like them as a "deterrent". But they aren't. Someone can just put a hood on, and bust the camera. I used to have one of those, but it was pointless and easy to defeat. Went with the hidden cams instead.

Cameras aren't going to stop someone, but they will will allow you to prosecute someone if necessary.

Hidden cameras are the way to go ... connected via wireless to a router that uploads pics to a server offsite.

They can't rip a tape out or destroy/disable anything before the pics are sent. Make sure to have a backup power supply on essential components. Amazon has these. Just search on wireless cameras. get one that has it's own IP so you can use a direct connection (via router) to the offsite server.

hoosierdaddy --- 12 years ago -

We have cameras from back when people were stealing our gas but apparently these thugs saw them because they went up the driveway from the other side and stayed in a corner where the camera wasn't facing. Our motion detector lights didn't even phase them. They were probably just unarmed teens looking for some tools they could sell. I am very grateful they didn't harm our dogs but our dogs really did them a huge favor scaring them off.

Somebody broke into my truck and I had 4 Astros tickets on the dash....they left 4 more!

I have seen "wireless" cameras, meaning no ethernet cable, but what about the power supply? Seems difficult to avoid those wires, if you are dealing with small cameras that would not be big enough to have long-lasting batteries.

If your firearms are stored properly and your drunk, red neck butt is asleep how are you gonna defend your home.

Love these threads when folks who can't fight the gnats off their azz get all jelled up talking about guns.

Always a fave!!

Loki --- 12 years ago -

True, the first ones I played with used 9 volt batteries. They lasted about 8 hours. Pain in the butt.

You have to wire them up to a line bank, use an AGM battery. Yes, you have wires (for power) still (but don't have to mess with an additional wire back to the router).

You could always try and break in........then we will see who wins ;)

Kisses.......

Gigolo Bloodline --- 12 years ago -

Kisses back but I don't picture you as a redneck blowhard.

FabFive --- 12 years ago -

Why did the term redneck come into play? Weren't we just having a nice normal conversation and now it has been hijacked changing the entire direction of the thread?

Gigolo Bloodline --- 12 years ago -

Kind of like when Obama the thug, terrorist, communist, Muslim, Chicago criminal terms are thrown in??

Laughing...watch the so called anti PC bunch roll in and ask for manners now.

SagaciousSighFiGurl (Mod) --- 12 years ago -

Ok, let's be mannerly, peeps. LOL

kari.kolo --- 12 years ago -

the term 'red neck' is an intentional bigoted slur

indelible, you just might as well have used the 'n-word' -
different skin color, but same intention of targeted hate speech

Gigolo Bloodline --- 12 years ago -

Ok. When you see Obama depicted as a thug by the unemployed KKKU gang please let them know to be mannerly.

After all, redneck is a term that describes a multitude of folks oftentimes kind heartedly. Can we say the same about the hate that spews from the same 5 or so people day in, day out?

Gigolo Bloodline --- 12 years ago -

Reach LROD/chunk reeaaach. Must have hit close to the trailer.

Pacmax --- 12 years ago -

I think the people your talking about live on the computer 24/7. They always have something negative to say about everything...

some black people call themselves the n-word quite frequently - that doesn't make it right

using 'red neck' as bigoted hate speech is just as wrong

Gigolo Bloodline --- 12 years ago -

Yep, and say they work from home.

Pacmax --- 12 years ago -

And this site is there whole life...sad..

Gigolo Bloodline --- 12 years ago -

How did I know that Kari or die would go with the n-word example???

How oh how? $20

Drop the bait and laugh.

lol - no, the grand prize goes for getting liberals to DEFEND:

- the IRS
- the FBI
- the CIA working with the State Dept in Syria
- and the CIA's use of Drones to kill American Muslims overseas

so while you have your wallet out, I'll collect that $20 from you now for showing how you're EAGER to defend Bigotry with your use of the term 'red neck'

Gigolo Bloodline --- 12 years ago -

Tip: don't be so PC.

SoupIsGoodFood --- 12 years ago -

LOL @ tommyboy throwing out the race bait.

It's been a while for you tommyboy.

He's all about race.

In AbsentiaW --- 12 years ago -

Is "Coon Ass" considered racial derogatory too?

Gigix4 --- 12 years ago -

How did this thread get from an attempted break-in to bigotry?

*** sigh***
