A real situation this afternoon at a restaraunt. I will not name the place because of the many happy times i have been there plus i think that sometimes bad things happen to good people....

Party of 10. All separate checks.......they took our first names to identfy individual bills....Orders and drinks went fine (you do not delay delivery of my wine, or you will hear about it....lol)

Salads came first (pretty reasonable time) but a few who ordered ranch dressing got bleu cheese...like me.....but this is good with me cause i like them both. Some were not cool with it and they got replacements......so far so good, right?

Time marches on........45 minutes pass...no food......complain, complain......"it's coming out now".......ok it is here....Nobody got the right plate except the outsider that ordered something off the wall...(not me)......One lady did not get her food at all.....the amped her order up and got it out about the same time as my second glass of chardonnay....(which was very prompt, lol)

Time marches on.......we want checks...we are old and can't waste that much time.......one party member pitches a hissy fit (sorry hissy fit) and says she MUST leave....(she was riding with other people in the party) so they brought her a check and she paid.....(what to do now? do i go sit in the car???) lol........then our checks came and none of them were right.......none......except the order off the wall person and a couple of others, they paid and went on their way......

The waitress told the rest of us to come up to the register to pay so it would be faster.....somebody says "who has a credit card?" I said I do...and my name is "lilly" and she took it and ran off will my card......my friend "Tilly" had just paid. They brought back my card and yelled "Tilly"..and i said, no, my name is "lilly"........."oh, i thought you said Tilly........NO.....so they went to re submit my card....and you can't do that on the same card within 30 minutes without manager approval (a wonderful policy) so manager came out and was now facing 3-4 irate women.....who had patience, but lost it when they started messing with our credit cards......and he said.."It's all on me"...........others in the party protested, but I said I thought it was the right thing to do......

What do you think? 

They should have comped everyone at that point...

"it's all on me" as in they comped everything or he was taking the blame for all the delay?

If he was comping everything, good for him.

If he was just taking the blame, he should have at least knocked everyone down to $10 and be done with it.

"I'm sorry" doesn't always cover multiple mistakes that cost time and patience. 

He did the right thing to ensure that you will consider coming back again. If he didn't offer to comp you'd have the complete negative experience in your mind and you would have an all around negative story to spread. Now you have something positive to say by him offering no charge. 

It is the #1 reason why I prefer dining in smaller groups. It's also the #1 reason why I'll offer to put the whole thing on my card and have others in the dinner party pay me separately.

I'll do that as long as I really know who I'm with. People don't always cash to give me at the moment and most are not near the tipper I am. I hate making up for others skimping tipping. 

Did you guys request separate checks from the get-go, or at the end? 

They should have comped everyone at that point... 

some of them were paid and gone........but i think he will comp all cards.......the cash people got what they paid for and are happy.

he did do the right thing......because we were so patient with them....and i don't really care what happens....but i don't want you to swipe my card twice for me and Tilly......that is scary.......

I'll go back there.....just not in a big group........ 

If he's smart,the next time you go there will be a big sign "no seperate checks".

Situations like this is why many policies are developed. Party of 10, seperate checks? really?

This is true, which is why i don't name names in this case......

And we always say separate checks up front, and they were NOT Holiday busy......

Actually, waitress on drugs crossed my mind a time or two and I am not prone to think that way.......
