POLL: Bring back the blue law?

A blue law is a type of law designed to restrict or ban some or all Sunday shopping for religious standards, particularly the observance of a day of worship or rest. Blue laws may also restrict or ban sale of certain items on specific days, most often on Sundays in the western world. With nearly all retailers and fast food restaurants open 7 days a week and now staying open on Thanksgiving and Christmas is it time to bring back the blue laws, even though they have a religious origin?

I would have no problem with everything being closed on Sundays, but I don't see why the government needs to get involved. Let the owners of the store or the union of workers decide the days of operation...

FabFive --- 11 years ago -

Chick Fil A is doing just fine, but that is their choice. I don't think the gvt should interfere.

Snake Plissken --- 11 years ago -

Hobby Lobby is also closed Sundays.

Maybe the reason chick filet service far exceeds all other fast food restaurants is that they're closed Sunday?

It is I WhyWhyWhy --- 11 years ago -

meh I don't care. If people want to work and shop on those days who am I to say no.

If we brought back this law would we close everything? Gas stations, restaurants, fast food places? Everything or are we going to decide who gets to do what things on Sunday? I think they need to open the liquor stores on Sunday and quit discriminating. For some reason its always Sunday when I think of going to the liquor store.

FabFive --- 11 years ago -

I think we have way bigger problems than who is open on Sundays. I'd prefer to use our resources for that stuff.

DVaz --- 11 years ago -

Some stores start their Black Friday sales Thanksgiving morning now. I preferred it when all were closed all Thanksgiving day.

I think its a bit ridiculous to be open on Thanksgiving and I guess Christmas is next. I don't think we should have laws to stop it though.

GeorgiaPeach --- 11 years ago -

Just boycott the stores who don't give their employees a break.

Mom2my3sons --- 11 years ago -

No, the government should never tell us how to live our lives. If people did not go out shopping on Thanksgiving the stores would not be open. I do miss however, when stores were closed on Sundays and all holidays but now I'm just showing my age! ;)

I grew up with the Sunday Blue Laws. I can tell you that they are a pain in the butt. Here's what else I can tell you.

For the most part, the Blue Law mandated that a store needed to be closed at least one day a week. Most chose Sunday, but some chose Saturday.

In Longview, where I lived during the Blue Law era, there were two department stores. This was before Wal Mart. One was Treasure City and the other was Gibson's. There was also a Gemco, but that was on the wrong side of the tracks....lol.

Treasure City was open on Saturdays and closed Sundays and Gibson's was open on Sundays and closed on Saturdays. So, with a Blue Law in effect, business still found a way to circumvent the intent of the law without actually breaking the law itself.

Heck, I'd like to see them remove the buying wine before noon on Sunday rule!!!....

Very, good point, why single out retail stores, how about TV and cable, airlines, trains, sporting events (not all are highly paid atheletes, somebody has to collect tickets)electrical workers so no electricity for a day...the list goes on and on.

If you don't want to shop on Sundays and Thanksgiving don't go and you probably shouldn't participate in any of the above (but I bet you do). Most of those people need the job,if they don't want to work weekends and holidays they will find other employmnent.

Ain't that the truth.

I agree. But now that it has started it may never go away. It will start the day after Halloween eventually.

Red Heifer --- 11 years ago -

it is a free country. business owners want to open (or close) on a particular day or days, that's up to them. you dont want to shop on sunday (or, like some of my coreligionists, Saturday), then don't.

Joe Blow --- 11 years ago -

Bring back the blue law?

What are you a Puritan from the 17th century?

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 11 years ago -

it should be up to the individual store- it was a stupid law to begin with-

MissPris --- 11 years ago -

As long as employees are being paid well for working Holidays, I think it should be up to employers to decide if they want to be open or closed on Holidays. As for No Booze on Sunday, it's silly and needs to end (not to mean to force companies who don't want to be open tone open but not force companies who want to be open to be closed).

Snake Plissken --- 11 years ago -

I'm a little surprised that some of the people that were so emotional over raising the minimum wage so a family could make a living wage are against a law that allows the worker to spend time with said family.

pregomommy --- 11 years ago -

car dealerships are still under the blue law in Texas.

SleightOfHand --- 11 years ago -

"car dealerships are still under the blue law in Texas. "

Nope, they can operate on Sunday, most choose not to. Texas requires them to be closed one day out of the week

pregomommy --- 11 years ago -

If they are open Sunday then they are closed on Saturday. Fred Haas toyota choses to do this as well as the Humble Hyundai, however they are closed on Saturday.

pregomommy --- 11 years ago -

Automobile Sales[edit]Car dealerships (both new and used) must remain closed on either Saturday or Sunday; the dealer has the option to determine on which day to close.[44]

Lord Cheezus DeSufferbus --- 11 years ago -

We need to have the blue laws back!!! Being able to buy socks on a Sunday is destroying society!!!
