Even Walmart has some smaller ac's for less than $100. They're big enough to cool at least a couple of connecting rooms. 

Your kids can go to the library during the day to read in comfort.

At night you can camp out and enjoy the fresh night air. 

There is no "fresh night air" during the summer months in Houston.

I wish it cooled down to 75 with a nice breeze...
