I am thinking about getting a handgun and taking the class to get a permit. I grew up deer hunting and am not "gun sky", but I do not have a lot of grip strength and small hands. Do any of you ladies have a suggestion? I think there is a gun show at the George R. Brown next Saturday, but wanted to get some ideas ahead of time.

Ruger makes a .38 Spl ultralight with a very light trigger pull. Awesome little gun. My daughter's fiance bought her one recently. She's very petite and handles the gun easily.

I have a Sig Sauer 380 and love it, (actually I have 2) it's not very heavy and the trigger pull is fine as well.

andreweggplant --- 10 years ago -

I have a Smith and Wesson MP Shield 9 MM. Small and lightweight. I found the recoil to be a bit less than the 38's. They are a bit pricey right now due to availablity. You can go to Sportsman's or Big Thunder and try different guns to see what you like best.

One I can recommend you NOT purchase is the Smith and Wesson Bodyguard. While it's light weight, it has an extremely long trigger pull. I sold mine for that very reason.

I have used DH's Glock 9MM but I find it to be heavier than I'm comfortable with. Good luck, and happy shooting!

I was just thinking about the same thing! Goodie, I need some info too!

TinktheSprite --- 10 years ago -

Thanks, I never thought to consider trigger pull. Is it true, the smaller the handgun the larger the recoil??

DH is lucky I didn't have a gun the other day when he suggested another job for me. Isn't one full time job and taking care of him enough, I ask?!

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 10 years ago -

I have the same problem- I've tried a .380, (not sure if it's a Glock or Ruger) and I still had trouble with racking it- my left thumb is almost unusable- it was Mikey's gun, and he showed me a way to use the gun instead of my thumb, but it pinched the shizz out of me! LOL!

crazy people shouldn't have guns. So just be sure you're not crazy.

.40 cal s&w. 0

My wife has one in her purse. Fits nicely, and it a guaranteed free ride to see Allah.

If you have weak hands, get a revolver. Ruger makes the SP 101, you can get it in either 38 special or 357 magnum.

I always recommend a revolver for people that have weak hands, and/or are not going to spend the time at the range to know how to handle a semi auto in the event of a jam.

Defcon1 --- 10 years ago -

One I can recommend you NOT purchase is the Smith and Wesson Bodyguard.

I heavily disagree.

The Smith & Wesson bodyguard is an EXCELLENT choice and the long trigger pull is a terrific safety feature.

A small amount of practice and the Bodyguard is just as maneuverable as any other pistol.

It's the perfect size, easy to handle and goes boom every time you pull the trigger.

This is one of the BEST concealed carry options out there.

Gigix4 --- 10 years ago -

I've got a .357 revolver and while it's probably on "ol' lady's gun" I'm good with it. I am used to handling weapons so it's not a hindrance to me.

A S&W .38 special is an excellent small carry gun, especially with a laser site.

all depends on your hands and what feels right to you. My PPK is perfect for women with small thin hands, great gun. But it pinches my husbands hands because his are too big for it. I am looking to get the new Walther CCP next.

Tumbleson in Humble offers a great deal on the CHL class, go to groupon and look up CHL classes in Humble. He's awesome and a fireman that does this one the side to help support his family. Really enjoyed his class.

SleightOfHand --- 10 years ago -

I recommend either a 9mm semi auto or .38 special revolver. .380 is too small of a round to do a whole lot, especially if the turd is wearing a thick coat. .40 s&w is a hard hitting round but it has significant recoil in smaller guns.

AngieKaye --- 10 years ago -

I love my husbands S&W but it doesn't fit right in my hand and bruises me. I also have a great ruger but its only a .22

I would suggest just to to an academy store and get the feel, or gun shows are the best. If you have a friend that owns several go to a gun range and try them out. What feels right might not when firing it. After my PPK busted I fear it now, so back to the range to let it show me it will do the trick!

I have bodyguard and love it, very easy to use. I thought recoil also had to do with length of barrel? Not sure of term used here...

Riding Teacher --- 10 years ago -

I like my 9mm and my little 380 that fits in a pouch not much bigger than a cell phone. I have a 38, several shotguns and have previously owned a Judge and of course lots of rifles. I know everyone loves the Judge but I didn't really like it nor do I enjoy shooting the 38. But it really isn't about enjoying shooting it. I actually prefer for protection a little tighter trigger. Best of luck finding the best one for you and your situation.

mutton --- 10 years ago -

we have a judge but it scares me so no shoot it yet for me, lol.

AMDG --- 10 years ago -

Sleight - is there any shoot don't shoot training available for civilians in houston.

Grammybob1 --- 10 years ago -

I have a Smith and Wesson .38 and I can't pull the trigger because of arthritis in my hands.

Grammy if can't pull the trigger.. No use having a gun. 9MM gun of choice..smooth and knock down power, you don't want them getting up.

AngieKaye --- 10 years ago -

grammy try a ruger or barretta, smooth easy pulls and very little recoil

Beth --- 10 years ago -

I have a 9MM Baretta I love and a 40 that I worked up to but it will do the job if needed I have a 25 and a 357 and a shotgun but may I suggest you go to a shooting range and they will let you try these different guns. Then you can see what you are comfortable with before you buy.
