Anyone having problems with rats/mice in their house?

We live in hunter ridge and I'm ready to mive out. We have caught two and I saw another one tonight. We found where they are getting in and blocked it off, and have traps everywhere.

We have heard from several different people that rats are a problem in kingwood.

Anyone have a good recommendation for an exterminator for this type of issue?

Zapper009 --- 9 years ago -

We have heard from several different people that rats are a problem in kingwood.

Only if they have food, such as dog or cat food or birdseed to eat.

Have live here over 8 years and have only seen 1 mouse, years ago...

Good luck...

Tera --- 9 years ago -

Thanks. We keep our dog food in a metal container....

I have lived here for ten years, and my husband has lived here nearly 30 and this is the first time we have ever seen them....

andreweggplant --- 9 years ago -

What part of HR? I had them when I first moved here. Got some packages of something at Kroger I threw around the attic. They left and I had all the holes plugged and screen put over the vents. I did have one in the grill last summer but haven't seen them this year. I was told they are Norweigan Roof Rats?

Polly Ester --- 9 years ago -

They come in when the weather changes and it gets cooler. It is the forest, so critters are here too. Even the nasty ones.

FANCY PANTS --- 9 years ago -

Don't put out rat poison. If another animal gets a hold of it they will die. Also, if the rat dies in your attic or the wall of your house the smell is just awful. Rat traps are best. When they are all gone you have to close up any points of entry.

I got the best trap at Aspaughs. There was something in coming into the laundry room because I found the nasty little droppings. This was simple and the best part was I didn't have to look at it after it was dead.

I bought this mouse zapper at Aspaughs. It is awesome.

I got the best trap at Aspaughs.

I'm going to have to get one of those!

Tera --- 9 years ago -

Thank you! We live off Brookdale by the park. We put out traditional mouse traps, glue traps, and a live trap and he went around all of them.... I know that because I put flour down, and he must of rolled around in it just to tick me off. We had a place by the AC where they were getting in and we sealed it up after we caught two. But obviously there is still one (or more) still lingering around.

I have thrown out most open food, or put it away in a sealed tight plastic container.

I am not sure what kind of rats they are but they have an extremely long tail. We are not doing poison because we have a dog and a 2.5 year old.

I'm going to go to Alspaughs now! Thanks

If you read the Amazon reviews there are tons of tips for catching the critters. You can even order something (called a tail) that lets you put it in your attic and be alerted if something is in it.

But the best part for me (besides not having to even look at a dead mouse-ugh) is that I can leave it in the laundry room all of the time and it lights up if it catches something. I bait it with a little dry nuts and raisins from a little bag of trail mix. Then I just empty and dispose of the dead mouse in my outdoor trash without even looking at it. I just like it that it is on all of the time even if I go months without catching one. I don't see any dropping so I know they aren't there now but when it gets cooler I expect a couple to come in again.

Be sure to read the directions carefully. They tell the best batteries to use, and tips like to wear rubber gloves when handling the box so the mouse doesn't smell your human scent and avoid it. They are crafty critters!

We moved here a few years ago and when I talked about the mice, people said, "Welcome to Kingwood"... Crazy!! Anyway, check around all your pipes in the bathrooms (where they come in from the wall). Ours had space around them where the contractor had cut too large a hole for the pipe but never filled it. They were coming in there.

And kitchen and also behind the dishwasher

Thank you!

Texas homes being of poor quality are full of mouse size holes. I had a rat in one of my Kingwood rentals once. I hired exterminators and all. All exterminators do is sell you the same bait stations you can get at lowes. They dont work. Rats are picky & creatures of habit. they dont eat the variety of stuff mice eat. Best way I find to kill them is put those blue poison pellets inside 'fresh' grapes or other fruit, or use a big trap.

Mice are easy to catch. I also bring lots of snakes into my yard to keep the population low.

I also bring lots of snakes into my yard to keep the population low.?

How do you bring snakes into your yard? Do you trap them or do you buy them?

ugly yapper dog --- 9 years ago -

Im trolling with the snake comment, since so many people kill them. As a kid I used to catch them all the time, Id just grab em with a snake stick and bag them. I see them on the trails a lot, and the occasional rat snake in my yard.

We have a live trap but he's not taking the bait.... Any suggestions on what to use?

Chunky peanut butter

voice of reason --- 9 years ago -

if you're sure you figured out and blocked off where they're entering, why in heaven's name would you want to move???

they're rodents not vipers.

voice of reason --- 9 years ago -

peanut butter it doesn't have to be chunky!

Devon --- 9 years ago -

Personally, I think the glue traps are inhumane and should be banned.

Instead of an instantaneous death, the little guy endures an awful, and horrendous, death by suffocating.

Good luck in getting rid of them, but please don't use a glue trap.

Tera --- 9 years ago -

Do you honestly think I would move? Obviously I was being dramatic to get my point across.

We took up the glue traps because I read awful reviews about them. We are using peanut butter but he just ignores the trap, and on the traditional trap he licks it off. I think the traps are not sensitive enough of set wrong. He's/ she's a smart rat.

Thanks for all the advice.

lizandmike --- 9 years ago -

We have a friend who is an exterminator. We thought we had mice/rats outside. Turned out to be a squirrel. Their droppings look similar.
Anyway, his recommendation was to go to the pest control store (over on 1960, east of Lake Houston Pkwy, but before the lake) and get a trap. It's a box with 2 holes in it and the trap goes inside. He said to bait it for several days, but not set it, so the critter would get accustomed to it. Then set the trap. Bait it with a blob of peanut butter.
This kind of trap is nice because everything is contained inside the box and you can simply hose out the box and start over if needed.

fuzz81 --- 9 years ago -

We have a nutria that keeps visiting in the middle of the night

I use glue traps, but only indoors for insects. Caught a few brown recluse on them :|

Tera --- 9 years ago -

We caught the last rat we hope!!! Hooray!

PICASSO --- 9 years ago -

our professional exterminator at my facility said to put steel wool where they enter ,they will not chew it because they do not like how the metal feels on their teeth.

NCNative --- 9 years ago -

Bread. I know it sounds weird...

Tera --- 9 years ago -

Well no sign of any rats tonight... But our AC did go out.

Just our luck! 😡

We caught the last rat we hope!!! Hooray!

I'm hearing something in our walls :( What did you end up using? I hope your problem is solved.

RedMulch --- 9 years ago -

The last rat is never caught. lol

I have never found a mouse/rat, but lizards and tree roaches come inside this time of year.

Leila --- 9 years ago -

After reading this thread and getting creeped out I ordered the traps Polly described off of Amazon. I have had mice before when the weather started getting cooler and didn't want to have the problem again this year.

I set the trap up in the kitchen and baited it and got a mouse the 2nd night. Got another one the next night. Yikes! I didn't even know I had any!

That was a week ago and so far no more of the nasty buggers. But since I can leave it set and it is in an unnoticed spot I figure I will leave it there just in case.
