...er...Chanukah...whatever....to those who celebrate.

Significance: Remembers the rededication of the Temple

Observances: Lighting candles or oil

Length: 8 days

Chanukkah is probably one of the best known Jewish holidays, not because of any great religious significance, but because of its proximity to Christmas. Many non-Jews (and even many assimilated Jews!) think of this holiday as the Jewish Christmas, adopting many of the Christmas customs, such as elaborate gift-giving and decoration. It is ironic that this holiday, which has its roots in a revolution against assimilation and the suppression of Jewish religion, has become the most assimilated, secular holiday on our calendar.

and to you, sweet girl!

Assimilation is good.

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 9 years ago -

it is good- but I know Jewish people don't want to lose their religious roots- that's how they've managed to maintain their identity over 5000 years-

Chag sameach Red, if it helps any we are having a pretty tough time keeping Christ in Christmas as well.

jacobson --- 9 years ago -

Their roots are in God, not a religion.

put a sock in it, jakey-

You are the one who needs to put a sock in it and stop giving out false info.

"Imagine...no religion too...." But I have no interest in losing my religion (another musical reference) any more than anyone else does. Do you mean that we should all lose religion and just be secular humanists? I respect that point of view too but I'm not quite ready to give up what I have.

Freedom of religion. You can keep it!

Completely sympathize with that, AM, and I think I would feel the same way. So, you do it your way and hope that others will get it.

Thanks, lady!

Assimilation is good.

Of course not. I mean acceptance of our differences.

It means that all are free to pursue and celebrate that which makes us special.

here, here!

seems so simple, doesn't it BB? all of us from the same tree, just different branches (and a few different fruits).

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 9 years ago -

and a few nuts!

fuzz81 --- 9 years ago -

We need more squirrels to bury the nuts.

Is this why the Beloved Jacobson has been jammed into ice?

RayofHope --- 9 years ago -

Yeshua (Jesus) celebrated it, and more Christians joined in this year.

Yes Fuzz, we shall keep our freedom of religion. Not sure what you meant by that post?
