Thanks for the post on trauma, it?s a subject that is overlooked.
Before becoming a high school journalism teacher I was a medical writer for a health network and paramedic educator (In the Texas Medical Center). I served on the board of directors of the American Trauma Society with several physicians and hospital administrators.
I got involved with the group over a comment Dr. Red Duke (someone I would later work with) made at a LifeFlight conference. He said people get up every day and worry about cancer and heart attacks, but do not worry about what could happen during their daily drive to work.
Trauma is a major killer, which the Houston area is not handling well. Houston has fewer level I trauma centers than San Antonio and Dallas, places with smaller populations.
Unfortunately, Houston area residents think their high mortality rate (from trauma) is O.K.
