About 13 years ago our Pup let us know that Dog's Day Inn was the place he liked. He always was ready to go in and happy as well to come out prancing with a new haircut. Our Rescue went there since he was a puppy, too. One dog is 14 and the rescue is 13 year old.

Whenever we go in now, we are careful to stress the age of our senior dogs especially the one who is deaf, and blind. As you can imagine, our old dog is slow but steady as he uses only his sniffer to familiarize himself with his surroundings. Being 14, he sometimes gets confused. Isn't that a given?

After this last grooming that was the highest price ever- $68 for a 28 lb dog. He came home with weepy red eyes as either hair or soap had gotten into it. I know this is a risk of getting groomed but this is the first time someone was so careless with our old dog.

Upon speaking to personnel at Dog's Day Inn, the only apology I got was "sorry" that I didn't understand why they applied the extra charges to rid my dog of mats this time, that eye irritation is basically part of the deal. I told her that though my dog doesn't use his eyes any longer, he doesn't need an eye infection. I am unhappy with that response and I don't not want to take my dogs back there despite our 13 year loyalty.

I know many groomer recommendations have been given on KU. But I am looking for a new groomer who has time, not the run of the mill groomer who just pushes my dogs through their client line. I am looking for a groomer who will take care of our old dogs with kid gloves and give them the special, gentle handling that they deserve at this point of their lives, perhaps even a little more time and consideration. Any suggestions?

Pet Ranch is fabulous- the best-not cheap, but it takes a month or two, to even get an appt!!!! I'd book now, for the future-

~grandma again~ --- 12 years ago -

i have heard of 2 good ones. there is one at FurBabies over by Pampered Paws and then one at Pet Ranch.

i take care of grooming my dog myself and let the vet do the nail clipping for me.

edited to add: my dog is deaf and any place i take him, he becomes very confused and sort of panics, thus my grooming him myself. :(

Used to be Atascamom --- 12 years ago -

I took my shihtzu puppy there for her first groom. They called me to tell me she was ready to pick up but I could not sched another appt unless she had a sedative. Seriously? She was a baby at the time. NEVER went back. I was using Klips N Dips until they cut off her top knot that had been growing for a year. I didnt say anything because really- what could they do about it? The most recent 3-4 grooms have been done by Pierre's. The shuhtzu cut requires a lot of patience and skill. I feel that Pierre's does a better cut, although a little more expensive. As far as car and love for the dog, Klips N Dips is great.. maybe the most caring/loving I have ever seen.I would recommend both.

I've used quite a few groomers, and the job pet Ranch does,is phenomenal-the first time I brought them on, a schnauzer came out, and I swear he looked like he was ready for a competition-I have my littlest dog trimmed like a Schnauzer, and the cut is completely even (first time any groomer got it right) and they squeeze anal glands and trim nails-

~Jarina~ --- 12 years ago -

I think Fur Babies would be the best place for your babies. They allot 4 hours for each appointment, so they don't have to rush your pets through the process. I started using them in December and I'm so pleased with the results. There's a calm feeling about the place, unlike where I took him before, which was like a zoo.

Go and talk to them about your concerns & I think you'll be very happy to take them there.

Trekk --- 12 years ago -

Pet Ranch ... hands down.

It's worth the wait.

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 12 years ago -

absolutely- I never heard of Fur Babies-is it new?

~Jarina~ --- 12 years ago -

Fur Babies is next door to Pampered Paws, in the Woodland Hills Plaza (Woodland Hills and Lake Hills).

Fur Babies

freebyrdII --- 12 years ago -

They also offer a phenomenal "self dog wash."

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 12 years ago -

Oh, yeah!! the owner told me they were setting up a self serve dog wash!

TinktheSprite --- 12 years ago -

Thank you. I like that 4 hour window! I will check out Fur Babies and Pet Ranch.

Dog's Day Inn did one thing right. My old dog also wears a diaper (they were told that) and we asked that he be saved clean in the area so we could keep him cleaner. The last grooming they were told this, and they left his hair on the sides. I assume that is where it matted up. This time, at least they shaved him clean on the sides where his diaper rubs.

genxer --- 12 years ago -

Okay i have 4 pet kids and they all go to Pet Ranch. And they will never go any where else no matter how much i grumble about the wait. Lady is very old and feeble now and Erin just is so kind to her.

I also have an elephant and they always do him perfeclty as well.

I have zero complaints, i know they are all well taken care of out of my site, especially the two older ones who need special help.

Keep up the good work :)

Dorothy Parker --- 12 years ago -

Sorry they were mean to your poor dog and then to you, afterwards. :(

RushJunkie --- 12 years ago -

I just picked up my sweet girl from Fur Babies. I could not be happier. Allison is gentle and kind. Give them a call. They use the very best products. I like that

Froggie --- 12 years ago -

Pet Ranch....no doubt about it. I too love Erin, she just has that "touch" with my two that go there, the other one I bathe myself, he's only 2 pounds and doesn't require any haircuts.....yet.

gunsnroses --- 12 years ago -

Will never use Pet Ranch again after the last time. They did a schnauzer groom on my toy poodle! I had to look her over very close just to be sure it was my dog! Will try the new self serve place next.

freebyrdII --- 12 years ago -

Im pm'ing you for more info.... :/

BTW, did you take the dog in? Also.... Where was this Pet Ranch located?

GOOD LORD.

freebyrdII --- 12 years ago -

g&r..... ? Please help here ....

Jpgirl --- 12 years ago -

Hope G&R answers- that doesn't sound like either groomer

gunsnroses --- 12 years ago -

Yes, I took my dog in. I actually got out of my car, opened the hatch to look at the dog again just to be sure I was not leaving with someone else's dog. I should have come back in to ask why a schnauzer groom on a toy poodle at the time. Guess groomers can have an off day like everyone else. I went home and re groomed her face with my clippers.

gunsnroses --- 12 years ago -

I will go further to say that I have taken other pets to Pet Ranch over the years and have been very pleased with the grooming.

freebyrdII --- 12 years ago -

Where was this Pet Ranch? PLEASE! Also could you please respond to my pm..

JustLivin --- 12 years ago -

Guns - I had a similar experience, but the owner tried to make it right and refunded my money and apologized more than once. Didn't help my nearly shaved dog in the cold weather we were headed to that Christmas, but I at least felt better that something was done about it. I don't believe that groomer is there any longer as I hear nothing but good things about them now. I learned that it is my responsibility to be as specific as possible and as someone I used to know always said, "account for stupidity".

I went into Pet Ranch (near HEB) about 9 or 10 months ago for a new collar for a puppy and the man, who I think was the owner but I could be wrong, was very helpful in suggesting a few describing how the weight of the collar would be imprtant (I wouldn't have thought of that....)...

I take my dog to Dog's Day for the Inn- going tomorrow actually. Never been truely satisfied with their service, but it's convenient and I think that it helps my dog when we're gone to go to the same place each time.

Genuine Plastic --- 12 years ago -

Tried Dogs Day Inn once. Never will go there for anything ever again. Too many grievances to list. From the lodging carelessness, to the grooming blunders, to the lost personal items, to not following explicit feeding needs, to the lack of courtesy from management. My poor puppy left there scared and skittish and would shy away from even me. I don't know what they did to him, but he was scarred from the experience.

Pet Ranch only employs the best of the best. I will give them my business for anything and everything. They expertly groomed my hard-to-groom Wheaten Terrier and had him looking like he was ready for the show ring. They had every part trimmed perfectly to spec. The 4 month wait between appointments is the perfect amount of time between cuts.

AngieKaye --- 12 years ago -

I still need to know if Erin will groom our malamute and she will have to be musled. Not that I don't trust the dog but she does get testy.

Also can someone tell me if its ok to trim her fur ?

AngieKaye --- 12 years ago -

Muzzled too. Sorry auto correct hates me today

doglady --- 12 years ago -

Angie, I know you are not supposed to shave Huskies, and they are kinda in the same family. I bet you could call Fur Babies or Pet Ranch, and ask to speak to the groomer at each place and ask.

I am thinking not, but I am not 100 per cent sure???

DILLIGAFFAN --- 12 years ago -

I know it would be a bit of a drive, But a lot of people from KW drive to Cleveland or Liberty for TDL renewal. So surly their babies are worth the drive. Mo's Mutts 2001 N Cleveland St Dayton, TX 77535‎
(936) 257-2227 about 13 miles from Atascocita hands down is the most gentle and loving groomer I have ever seen.

TXkjk --- 12 years ago -

I've used Dogs Day Inn for the past three years. My pet goes every other Monday on a regular schedule and have always been treated very nicely and they do a great job with my pet. Never had a problem, not once. I prefer Miss Dorothy and she is the sweetest lady and my dog loves her.

Froggie --- 12 years ago -

Dogs Day Inn doesn't ask for shot records, do you really want your babies exposed to whatever might be walking through the door? I don't.

Himura Hitokiri --- 12 years ago -

Not really a problem if your dog already has his shots...

pumpkinsmom2 --- 12 years ago -

AngieKaye...hope this helps. No, never shave a Husky or Malamute.

Malamute fur is not meant to be trimmed and the coat can be ruined by a really "bad haircut" or shaving in certain areas, so the first rule is "go easy" because in a perfect world, you would keep the coat combed and never NEED to trim it. Also, there is LONG-coat which is usually long, soft, straight and lies flat and can be up to 8" in length on some dogs - similar to a Collie's coat. WOOLY-coats are extremely thick, dense, oily and may even be kinky or coarse in texture but are not necessarily long. Unless wooly coats are long too, they don't need trimming.

freebyrdII --- 12 years ago -

Also, once or twice a year your Malemute will "blow" it's coat. They have what is known as a double coat... It is that thick undercoat that they "blow" or shed. It is imperative that you or the groomer thoroughly brush the coat out at that time. This is typically done with a long tooth undercoat rake followed up by a slicker brush. As we've discussed, never cut a malamutes coat..... the key is proper coat management.

Froggie --- 12 years ago -

Not really a problem if your dog already has his shots...

This is true, but I don't want my dogs to be around those that haven't had their shots....it speaks volumes for those that don't vaccinate their animals.

FabFive --- 12 years ago -

A lot of people give their own vaccines. I always keep the labels attached to my dogs health record but some people will not accept it.

Bordatella is one of those vaccines that only covers a few strains. I have seen some really sick vaccinated dogs. Praise God it has never been mine, but I go to great lengths to ensure the health of my dogs and that means limiting exposure to groups of dogs.

You just have to be careful. The best thing a groomer can do is ask for records, and if you can tell they are responsible owners and they have vaccine labels please accept it because someone who goes to those lengths is not going to be the problem.

AngieKaye --- 12 years ago -

Thanks I guess this is the time she is multing that undercoat. I can sweep all day and still not get all her fur off the floor. I am gonna go purchase a muzzle and furminator today. It sucks when you breathe in and get a mouth full of her hair. Lol

Dog Gone Stylin' by the Lowes on 494 does a fabulous job. My dogs received countless positive comments after their cuts a few weeks back.

AngieKaye.... We sell but DON'T recommend the furminator for a Malemute's coat. Either a greyhound comb or preferable a long tooth undercoat rake will do a much better job AND be much less expensive.

I Kissed Frogs --- 12 years ago -

Lisa at Dog Gone Stylin is very nice :)
