I've heard that some DPS branches do not test kids on parallel parking. Not that I doubt DD's ability to do it, but it would definitely lower the stress level for her.

Does anyone have any knowledge of branches that do not test parallel parking? Or is that just a myth and she's stuck having to do it?

Thanks, in advance, and hope everyone has a great weekend!

Liberty has the reputation of being lenient with parallel parking.

No No No, we all did it she has to do it too. You want her to be one of these internet chicks?

Lol....I'll see how that argument flies with her!

Thanks for the info, Napoleon. I think we've gotten to the point where we find the location that has the earliest available date - which right now isn't until June 17th in Spring. Every other place I've seen so far doesn't have an opening until mid-July.

Liberty was lenient with parallel parking. They let my dd do it twice instead of failing her after her first attempt. She did it correctly but was a few inches further from the curb that she should have been. Every one in liberty was exceptionally nice too.

Cleveland is NOT lenient with parallel parking.

The ladies in Cleveland are just angry at the world. Every day is a bad day. Ol' bitties.

The texas driving test is a point system, you need X number of points to pass. Which means you can fail the parallel parking portion of the driving test and still get a license. I had to have three DPS officers lift my car off the curb after getting it stuck trying to parallel park, I still got a license he just took 10 points off for not being able to parallel park...NO BIG DEAL!!

I agree with this. I was also told you have to (now anyway) pass parallel parking in order to pass the test. In Liberty they do it first for this reason, so that if you do not pass it, they don't continue with the rest of the test.

I was asked to teach someone to drive last year which was a first for me, lol. dh and safeway taught our sons.

All was well with my lessons except for the parallel park. I can't really do it myself, so teaching someone else to do it was way out of my comfort zone. But after watching endless youtubes and picking up some tips, I ventured forward.

We used the Presbyterian church parking lot here in KW and a couple of lawn chairs to practice. We also went over to Liberty and practiced between their poles.

We even watched some other "testers" in Liberty do the parking on their test. It was easy to know who passed and who didn't because like I said, they stopped the test if they failed. The only "failures" I observed were people who went over the curb or hit a pole. A few could not quite get in on their first try and were allowed to pull out and start over and went on to pass.

They even told us that they don't expect it to be perfect, just don't hit the curb or poles.

I like Liberty because the street is wide and quiet. The busiest street they take you out on is their little main street. The people are so nice and friendly that they calm the nerves.

My friend that I taught passed with flying colors. She nailed the parking on her first try which made me as proud as could be.

Good luck to your daughter (and to you!).

If one cannot parallel park, one should not drive, period.

Well, there goes my 45+ years of having a perfect driving record. lol.

(I guess I could PP if I had to, especially after teaching someone else to do it, but I avoid it at all opportunities. It is so seldom necessary for me.)

♥♥justme♥ --- 12 years ago -

I would say she is stuck with having to do it. Take her to the Humble location on the weekend and let her practice there.

I had heard that you could fail the parallell portion and still pass, due to what ItsMygirl is saying but I don't think that is true at the Humble location. I have personally heard of my teenager's friends who FAILED more than once because they didn't pass the parallel parking part.

I believe they told my teenager this summer when the test started that if you hit a pole or curb that you fail.

any one can do it, you have to practice, I taught my downs syndrome cousin to do it, Im sure you could do it too.

I agree! I think we can all do it if we HAVE to. But, how often is it really necessary?

Four Pinocchios --- 12 years ago -

...or just circle the block until a parking space the size of an 18-wheeler opens up.

Its a good skill to know. I didnt have to do it for several years but since the jail I book inmates into moved, I have to do it all of the time now.

a3742956uu --- 12 years ago -

in spring they do it first and it is an automatic fail if you hit the pole or curb, but you can lose points on other things like being too far from curb or not centered and still pass. It is just part of the test to see how well they can control car.

Scarlet5 --- 12 years ago -

The Humble location also has a reputation of not having a high pass rate.
However, my princess passed last month woth flying colors. We were also told that if you hit the poles you fail the test.
Prior to my dd taking the test, her and her father went several times to the Humble location to practice pp. There were usually several people that were also practicing. The people just went in line and took turns.

planemom --- 12 years ago -

A friend of DD's failed her test because she hit the curb driving around the building to get to the parallel parking location. This was at the Conroe location.

hitting curbs anytime during the test is a fail.

My sister recently failed at Humble. Went to Spring the next day and passed with flying colors. When asked why she failed in Humble my sister told her that it was because she was in the turn lane too soon and broke the law. The lady responded with "That's silly, it's not a law, I couldn't pass in Humble" Sure enough when my mom looked it up, the 60 feet in a turn lane "rule" is not in the DPS handbook like the person in Humble said. She should have never failed the first time.

SleightOfHand --- 12 years ago -

There isn't a law regarding getting in turn lane too early. There is a law forbidding you from driving on center median and shoulder, which would ultimately become the left turn lane. So yes, your sister probably did break a law. Not all laws are written in the student manual.

Iluvdzny --- 12 years ago -

My son failed in Humble for the exact same reason. I bet they had the same person. He went the next day and passed at a different location.

reh6110 --- 12 years ago -

Not all laws are written in the student manual.

I understand that but the person with her told her that is was and asked if she actually read the manual because it was in there. Then when the Spring lady said that she should not have been failed for that it made us really question the Humble DPS.

TinktheSprite --- 12 years ago -

I used to be pretty good about parallel parking. It is all about geometry, judgment skills and practice. I wonder how good I am at it now??

Please let us know where and what time you are going to practice so I can make sure I am not parked around ya! LOL
