My kid saw it last night and said it was great. I'm leaving work early to go see it. I've been waiting a year!!

Anyone else a fan of NWA?

them --- 9 years ago -

Is NWA initials for something?

Dr Aborto --- 9 years ago -

Really?

a889324uu --- 9 years ago -

Is NWA initials for something?

Yes, it is.
And you know exactly what it is.

I've been told it's good, but really long-

It's about two hours, according to everyone I have chatted with who has already seen it.

I have been a fan since they came out, and I am actively trying to get one of my Sociology professors to give a selected topics class on the group and their rise.
Ice Cube hasn't always been an actor.
I'm sure that's shocking to a lot of the sheltered lol

The other day, I walked upstairs and heard one of my girls rapping "Straight Outta Compton" - made me smile.
I can't wait to take them to see this movie. They NEED to see it.

Why you should see it too

them --- 9 years ago -

Black people love to make fun of cool/hipster white folks like you.

LOL
That's funny...the guy who wears popped collar polo shirts and deck shoes acting as if he speaks for "black people."

them --- 9 years ago -

If that ain't the pot calling the kettle black.

Miss Understanding --- 9 years ago -

Ice Cube

Didn't he have a show on HGTV?

a889324uu --- 9 years ago -

Didn't he have a show on HGTV?

That's Vanilla Ice.

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 9 years ago -

I think that was Ice Tea!

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 9 years ago -

a889324uu --- 9 years ago -

Ice T is a cop on Law and Order.

And he survived the game.

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 9 years ago -

Right- I thought she was talking about IceT loves Coco, but I was guessing, I'm sure you're right-

mutton --- 9 years ago -

Ice Cube I love! Want to see how his son does...

a889324uu --- 9 years ago -

Right- I thought she was talking about IceT loves Coco, but I was guessing, I'm sure you're right-

The Vanilla Ice Project is on HGTV. I actually like it.

But, according to my husband, the only thing I ever watch is cooking and home improvement shows. I'm "boring" LOL

mutton --- 9 years ago -

Iced Tea? lol

a889324uu --- 9 years ago -

Want to see how his son does...

He looks just like him. I was reading an article about him having to wear Jheri Curl wigs...I laughed lol

I am torn on them using an actor to play Eazy-E instead of his son, but I guess the producers just didn't think he could pull it off.

Eazy-E was a character. I look forward to seeing the dynamics between the five.

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 9 years ago -

He does look like him! I just hope he can act-

DatBoyHooD --- 9 years ago -

Good movie wish they would have referenced btnh more.. They were a major part of Es life the last couple years.

Defcon1 --- 9 years ago -

Iced Tea?

All the good rappers, you know? Iced Tea, Q-tip, Vanilla Icecream, Ice Cubes...I think there's an up and comer called prep H.

Hippity hop is in the house.

them --- 9 years ago -

For anyone that's seen the movie, does the movie devolve into the narrative of "the white saviour" that helps the "inner city kid(s)"? This has been a criticism of dangerous minds, the blind side, the help, etc. Paul Giamati seems to play a big part as their manager.

Harry Callahan --- 9 years ago -

Drug users, songs about killing cops, and AIDS... great legacy. By the way, no adult should leave work early to see a movie.

Four Pinocchios --- 9 years ago -

My lily white a** used to live in Compton - near Long Beach Blvd and Alondra. It wasn't as rough and tumble as everyone makes it to be.

AwesomeTattooedDragon --- 9 years ago -

IceT!! Quit picking on me! Lol!!

DVaz --- 9 years ago -

dangerous minds, the blind side

They were based on true stories though.

Straight outta Compton is based on a true story, too....

White savior narrative in film

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The white savior narrative is a cinematic trope in which a white character rescues people of color from their plight.[1] The trope has an extensive history in cinema of the United States.[2] The white savior is portrayed as messianic and often learns something about himself or herself in the process of rescuing.[1] The trope reflects how media represents race relations by racializing concepts like morality as identifiable with white people over nonwhite people.[3] White saviors are often male and are sometimes out of place in their own society until they lead minorities or foreigners. Screen Saviors: Hollywood Fictions of Whiteness labels the stories as fantasies that "are essentially grandiose, exhibitionistic, and narcissistic". Types of stories include white travels to "exotic" Asian locations, white defense against racism in the American South, or white protagonists having "racially diverse" helpers.[4]

Kathleen Fitzgerald, associate professor of sociology, said, "While a successful film genre, this image is problematic because it frames the person of color as unable to solve their own problems, as incompetent." A common storyline in white savior films is a white teacher or white coach helping students of color. Fitzgerald said the storyline was not problematic on its own but that it "sells" in Hollywood despite thousands of teachers of color helping students of color and despite communities of color having their own leaders.[5] Noah Berlatsky in The Atlantic said the white savior narrative is frequently seen in slavery films, including award-winning ones. The films are variations of a single narrative where black people "are oppressed by bad white people" and "achieve freedom through the offices of good white people".

The following films have been described as containing the narrative:

12 Years a Slave
The Air Up There
Amistad

The Day I Tried to Live --- 9 years ago -

Ice T is a cop on Law and Order.

Iced T is a criminal.

mutton --- 9 years ago -

Sorry Tat, I found amusing...lol.

Suzanna43 --- 9 years ago -

I saw it on Saturday. It was very good. Very tastefully done I think. Ice Cube's son did a good job & he looks so much like him & has his fathers mannerisms down too. Even has the lip thing going when he talks & smiles. Jerry was not portrayed in a good light at all, it's a true story so I don't think any of their troubles with him were made up. So there is not the " white savior thing in this movie".
They even talk about Ice Cube writing Friday and there is a really funny reference to "Felicia" early in the movie. You just have to see the movie to get it. But again, it was a really good movie & brought back memories from back in the day.

Judge Smails --- 9 years ago -

I paid to see Boyz in the Hood.
I paid to see Dangerous Minds.
I bought every NWA disc.

What else need I do to be accepted into the black community the way JAMS claims she is?

(btw, JAMS is no longer on KU so that's not calling out an active user, per the rules.)

JAMS hasn't been here for months, and yet you are STILL obsessing over her.

Flattering or terrifying?

What else need I do to be accepted into the black community the way JAMS claims she is?

LOL, you can't even get the white community to accept you.

You should try and work on that first.
